It depends on your Minecraft edition: nitwits can participate in Java Edition iron golem farms, because villagers do not need professions to summon golems. In Bedrock Edition, do not rely on nitwits: the village needs enough villagers to have worked at workstations the previous day, and nitwits cannot do that work.
Java vs. Bedrock at a glance
| Mechanic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Are professions required? | No. Villagers do not need professions to summon iron golems. | Workstation work matters: at least 75% of villagers must have worked at workstations the previous day. |
| Can a nitwit participate? | Yes. A nitwit is still a villager, and lacking a profession does not disqualify it. | Do not count on a nitwit to meet the work requirement; nitwits cannot work at workstations. |
| Other core requirements | Villagers must gossip or panic under the relevant group conditions, and golem spawning is subject to cooldown, nearby-golem, and valid-spawn-space conditions. Minecraft Wiki tutorial | At least 20 beds and 10 villagers, all villagers linked to beds, at least 75% having worked the previous day, the player within simulation distance, valid spawning space, and a golem population limit. How nitwits affect a Java iron farm
You can include nitwits in a Java Edition farm. Java golem summoning does not require villagers to have professions, so a nitwit’s inability to take a job does not exclude it from the group.
That does not mean any group of idle villagers will produce golems. The cited tutorial describes summoning through gossiping or panicking: a group of five villagers with at least one gossiping villager can qualify, while a group of three panicking villagers can qualify. The farm also needs valid spawnable blocks and must satisfy the listed cooldown and nearby-golem conditions. Check the tutorial for the specific Java mechanics relevant to your version: Iron golem farming.
Why Bedrock farms need working villagers
Bedrock Edition uses a different village requirement. The cited tutorial lists a minimum of 20 beds and 10 villagers; all villagers must be linked to a bed, and at least 75% must have worked at workstations the previous day. It also lists player simulation distance, valid spawn space around the village center, and a golem-to-villager population condition. The described spawning volume is 17×13×17 around the village center. Minecraft Wiki tutorial

Nitwits do not have professions and cannot work at workstations. Mojang’s feature about nitwits describes them as having no trade, while the Bedrock farm requirement makes workstation work relevant. Mojang: “Meet the Nitwit” A Mojang bug-tracker entry also discusses workstation links in the context of Bedrock golem spawning, underscoring that the mechanic differs by edition. Mojang issue MCPE-186580
A conservative Bedrock setup
- Use at least 10 non-nitwit villagers that can work.
- Provide at least 20 beds and make sure every villager is linked to one.
- Ensure enough villagers actually work at workstations to meet the 75% requirement.
- Keep the village within the player’s simulation-distance volume and provide valid golem spawn space.
The available mechanics description does not establish how nitwits count toward every Bedrock minimum or percentage edge case. Avoid designing around an assumed nitwit allowance; a working non-nitwit population is the safer choice.

If the farm is not producing golems
- Confirm the edition and version. Java’s profession rule does not apply to Bedrock; game mechanics can also vary by version.
- Check villager and bed links. For Bedrock, verify that all villagers are linked to beds.
- Check Bedrock workstation activity. Make sure enough non-nitwit villagers worked at workstations the previous day to reach the threshold.
- Check player distance and spawning space. For Bedrock, verify simulation distance and valid space in the village’s spawn area. In Java, check the applicable spawning, group-behavior, cooldown, and nearby-golem conditions.
