The Charge Blade is a transforming weapon: use sword-and-shield mode to build energy and store it in phials, then switch to axe mode to spend those phials on powerful discharge attacks. The exact moves and button inputs vary by game, so this guide explains the shared core rather than a title-specific combo.
How does the Charge Blade work?
The weapon has two modes with different jobs. Sword-and-shield mode is the more mobile way to attack and generate energy. Axe mode turns that stored energy into heavier attacks. Capcom describes this basic cycle in its Monster Hunter Generations manual and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manual.

- Build energy: Attack in sword mode to fill the weapon’s energy gauge.
- Charge phials: Use the game’s charge action to store that energy as phials. In the Generations manual, the gauge also indicates the weapon’s elemental state and the number of usable phials during Element Discharge.
- Spend the charge: Change to axe mode and use Element Discharge attacks, which consume stored phials and produce an explosion on impact.
Why charge phials before switching to axe?
Phials are the payoff for building energy in sword mode. Discharges spend them, so attacking in axe mode without stored phials means you are not making use of that part of the weapon’s cycle. The rhythm is to build energy, charge it, then choose a moment to unleash it.
Do not let the sword’s energy overheat. Both cited Capcom manuals warn that an overheated weapon can cause attacks to bounce; the Generations manual specifically describes attacks bouncing if you continue attacking without periodically charging. Charge phials before that happens.

What do phial types do?
In Monster Hunter Generations, the manual distinguishes two phial types:
- Impact phials: Make it easier to stun a monster.
- Element phials: Add elemental damage to the discharge explosion.
That distinction is documented for Generations; phial effects and tuning should not be assumed identical across every Monster Hunter game.

What does charging the shield do?
In Monster Hunter Generations, performing an Element Up Roundslash powers up the shield and improves blocking. This is an additional use for the weapon’s charged state, alongside spending phials on axe-mode discharges. The exact way to trigger or maintain such effects depends on the game.
Why do Charge Blade controls vary by game?
Charge Blade’s underlying idea carries across titles, but its moves and controls are not universal. The Generations and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manuals document console-game mechanics; Monster Hunter Now’s Help Center documents a separate mobile scheme using screen taps, long presses and swipes. Name the game and platform before following a combo or input guide, and do not apply Now’s touch controls to a console version.
