But Portal Remote Play requires Wi-Fi: it is not offline play, and Portal does not connect directly to cellular service.
Does PlayStation Portal work away from home?
Yes. The Wi-Fi connection does not have to be your home network. A hotel, friend’s house, or other location can work if its Wi-Fi provides a suitable internet connection and your PS5 remains reachable at home. Portal streams gameplay from your paired PS5, so both ends matter: Portal needs Wi-Fi where you are, and the PS5 must be connected to broadband at home. It must be powered on or in Rest Mode, with Remote Play configured.
Can you use PlayStation Portal without Wi-Fi?
No—not for ordinary Remote Play from your PS5. PlayStation specifies broadband internet Wi-Fi for Portal. The device does not have its own cellular connection, and streamed PS5 games are not available offline through Portal.

PlayStation’s general Remote Play guidance mentions mobile data for compatible devices, but that does not establish direct cellular support on Portal. A phone hotspot can be an indirect option: the phone provides Wi-Fi for Portal, subject to mobile coverage, your data plan, and the quality of the connection. PlayStation Remote Play support
What connection speed do you need?
PlayStation’s Portal FAQ lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and recommends 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee of smooth play: stability and the network environment also affect the experience. Public Wi-Fi may be congested, restricted, or inconsistent, and PlayStation does not provide a latency or data-use figure in this guidance.

How to prepare Portal for hotel or public Wi-Fi
- Finish initial setup at home. Pair Portal with your PS5 and complete its initial setup before trying to connect to public networks.
- Make the PS5 reachable. Connect it to broadband and configure it to stay available for Remote Play in Rest Mode, or leave it fully powered on.
- Update Portal software. PlayStation’s release notes say version 3.0.0 added public network connection support and version 3.0.1 expanded it, including certain 5 GHz public networks. The notes specify that initial setup must already be complete. PlayStation Portal system software information
- Complete any network sign-in. Some selected public networks require an extra validation step. PlayStation describes using a smartphone or tablet to scan a QR code and finish validation in that device’s browser; hotels, cafes, and airports are examples. PlayStation announcement, June 18, 2024
- Check whether the connection is usable. If the network blocks the connection or is too slow or unstable, Portal may not provide a playable session. A different Wi-Fi network or a suitable hotspot may be necessary.
Which connection option makes sense?

Do you need PlayStation Plus?
A PlayStation Plus membership is not required just to use Portal Remote Player or Remote Play. A subscription may still be required for a game’s online multiplayer features. Cloud streaming is a separate feature associated with PlayStation Plus Premium, not the same as Remote Play from your own PS5; plan and catalog availability can change.
