No. An original PlayStation 2 memory-card save cannot be plugged into, read by, or directly imported to a PlayStation 5. Sony does not provide a PS2-memory-card conversion path, and the PS5 does not run original PS2 software. What you can transfer are saves created in supported PS4 or PS5 releases, using a same-network transfer, a compatible USB drive, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage. If the game is a PS2 title re-released for PS4 or PS5, compatibility depends on that modern release’s own save format.
The short answer: a PS2 memory-card file is not a PS5 save
A physical PS2 memory card and a file copied from that card are both part of the original PS2 save system. PS5 transfer tools do not recognize that format as a supported source. Connecting a PS2 card through an adapter, copying a card image to a USB drive, or placing the file in a PS5 folder does not create a supported import.

Sony’s PS5 Ultimate FAQ states: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” The statement, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020, covers original PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 software. Sony described compatibility as more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games, but that backward-compatibility figure does not include original PS2 games or their memory-card saves.

- Original PS2 hardware and memory card: there is no direct, Sony-supported route to PS5.
- A modern PS4 or PS5 release of a game that first appeared on PS2: transfer is possible only if that release creates a supported PS4 or PS5 save and the title provides a compatible migration feature, if any.
What Sony’s transfer tools can actually move
Sony’s documented transfer methods are designed for PS4 and PS5 saved-data formats. They do not convert a raw PS2 memory-card image. The format of the source save is therefore more important than the capacity of the drive or cloud account.

| Method | Supported source | What you need | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network transfer | PS4 saved data or PS5 saved data | The source console and PS5 on the same network | Available during PS5 setup and, with limits on users and data types, after setup |
| USB transfer | Compatible PS4 saved data copied to a USB drive | A compatible USB storage device and the same PlayStation account | Copies a supported PS4 save; a PS2 memory-card file remains unsupported |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PS4 or PS5 saved data | An active PlayStation Plus membership and the same account on both consoles | PS5 saves can auto-sync; PS4 saves are auto-uploaded but must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage |
Sony’s current support guidance allows up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. PS4 cloud storage also has a limit of 1,000 saved-data files. Those limits describe supported PS4 and PS5 saves; they do not make cloud storage a general-purpose PS2-card archive.
How to move a supported PS4 save to PS5
Use these procedures only when the source save was created by a PS4 game or a PS4-format release. A PS2 card does not become eligible merely because it was copied to a computer or USB drive.
Option 1: Transfer over the same network
- Keep the PS4 and PS5 available on the same network and sign in with the account that owns the saved data.
- During PS5 setup, follow the on-screen data-transfer process to select the PS4 as the source. Sony also documents a post-setup transfer, but that route has limits on which users and data types can be moved.
- Select the supported PS4 saved data you want to copy and let the transfer finish before disconnecting either console.
- Start the PS4-format game on PS5 and check for the save from the in-game load menu.
This route is useful when the original PS4 is still working and you want to move several supported saves without first preparing removable storage. It still transfers a PS4 save, not a PS2 memory-card structure.
Option 2: Export to a compatible USB drive
- On the PS4, copy the game’s saved data to a compatible USB drive using the PS4 saved-data controls.
- Eject the drive safely and connect it to the PS5.
- On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose Saved Data (PS4), and use the USB option to copy the save to console storage.
- Launch the PS4 game and verify the save in its load screen.
The USB must contain a supported PS4 saved-data export. A disk image made from a PS2 memory card is a different format, so the PS5 will not treat it as an importable PS4 save.

Option 3: PlayStation Plus cloud storage
- On the PS4, upload the supported PS4 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage while signed in to the same account you will use on PS5.
- On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings and choose Saved Data (PS4).
- Select cloud storage and manually download the required save to PS5 console storage.
- Open the game and confirm that the downloaded save appears.
PlayStation Plus membership is required for this cloud route. Sony distinguishes the behavior of the two console generations: PS5 saved data can auto-sync, while PS4 saved data is auto-uploaded but must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. Seeing a PS4 save in the cloud therefore does not mean that the PS5 game will download it automatically.
What if the PS2 game has a PS4 or PS5 re-release?
A re-release changes the save question because the modern version may use a PS4 or PS5 save format. If you purchase and play that release on PS5, its save can use the normal PS4 or PS5 transfer tools, subject to the release’s compatibility rules.
However, Sony’s general PS4/PS5 documentation does not promise automatic conversion from an original PS2 memory card. A re-release may be a separate product with a separate save system, even when the game content is based on the PS2 version. Any migration from the original game must be documented by the publisher or in that title’s support information.
- If the modern release has no PS2-import feature, you must start a new save in the PS4 or PS5 version.
- If it has a title-specific importer, follow that game’s instructions; the feature is not supplied by the PS5 operating system.
- If you already played the modern PS4 version, transfer its PS4 save by network, USB or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
The decisive question is therefore not “Was this originally a PS2 game?” but “Which edition created the save, and does that edition support PS5?”

PlayStation Plus streaming and downloaded versions use different saves
PlayStation Plus streaming introduces another distinction. Sony says that a streamed game’s save is stored in PlayStation streaming storage, while a downloaded game’s save is stored on the PS5 or PS4 console. The two save locations are not automatically synchronized with each other.
If you switch from streaming a title to downloading it, or switch in the opposite direction, do not assume that the latest progress will appear. Sony’s documented solution is to copy the save through online/cloud storage:
- Determine whether your progress was created in the streamed or downloaded version.
- Use the available online or PlayStation Plus cloud-save controls to copy the supported save.
- On the other version, download or retrieve that save from the appropriate saved-data menu before launching the game.
This applies to a supported modern PS4 or PS5 release. It does not provide a back door for an original PS2 memory-card file.

Why the old PS3 memory-card method does not work on PS5
Sony’s PS3 user guide documented a legacy procedure in which a dedicated memory-card adaptor was used to copy PS2 memory-card data into a PS3 internal PS2 memory card. That documentation demonstrates that PS2 data relied on a distinct memory-card system and a specific PS3 feature.
Rank #4
- Limited edition gold PS4 system
- 1TB Hard Drive
- Includes a gold DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller
- Mount not included
The PS3 adaptor workflow is not a PS5 import procedure. A PS3 can preserve or use that legacy data within its own supported environment, but the PS5 transfer menus accept PS4 and PS5 saved-data formats instead. Owning the old adaptor, a PS3, or a backup of the card does not add PS2 compatibility to PS5.
Choose the right path with this format check
- Save is physically on an original PS2 memory card: stop; there is no direct Sony-supported PS5 import.
- Save was created by a PS4 version: use same-network transfer, compatible USB export/import, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Save was created by a PS5 version: use PS5 saved-data transfer or cloud-sync features.
- Game is being streamed: treat streaming storage as separate from a downloaded console save and copy through online/cloud storage when changing versions.
- Game is a PS2-inspired re-release: check that title’s own support information for any PS2-card migration; do not assume one exists.
Common problems and how to diagnose them
The PS5 does not show the save
First verify that the save was created by the same PS4 or PS5 edition you launched. A PS4 save can be transferred to PS5, but it may not appear in a different product or a separate remaster. Also check that the console is signed in to the account used to create or upload the save.
Cloud storage shows the file, but the game cannot use it
For a PS4 save, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) and manually download it to PS5 console storage. Cloud presence alone does not place the file on the console. If the game is a different edition, the save may not be recognized even after download.
The transfer worked, but progress from streaming is missing
Check whether the missing progress belongs to a streamed session while the downloaded game is reading local console storage, or the reverse. Sony does not automatically transfer saves between those game types. Copy the supported save through online/cloud storage, then retrieve it from the destination version.

A USB drive contains a PS2 backup
The PS5 USB import function is for a compatible PS4 saved-data export. A PS2 card image, even when stored on the same drive, is not converted into PS4 format. You need either a title-specific migration feature in a modern release or a new save on the PS4/PS5 version.
What to expect before you retire the PS2
Keep the original PS2, memory card and any working accessories if preserving that exact save matters. The PS5 cannot serve as a universal reader for the card. For continued play on modern hardware, identify whether the game has a supported PS4 or PS5 release, then determine whether that release offers a documented importer. If it does not, preserve the old save on its original platform and treat the modern version as a new save environment.
For supported modern saves, choose the transfer method that matches your equipment: network transfer when both consoles are available, USB when you need a removable copy, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage when you want an account-linked backup. None of those methods changes the fundamental limitation: PS5 transfer tools move PS4 and PS5 saves, not original PS2 memory-card files.
