Yes. Minecraft Java Edition can use shaders with Forge through version-compatible options such as OptiFine or Oculus with Embeddium. But Iris itself does not support Forge: its FAQ says, “Forge is not supported.” If you want Iris, use Fabric or a supported NeoForge version instead.
Which shader route works with Forge?
The right choice depends on your Minecraft version and the mods already in your profile. Forge and NeoForge are separate loaders, so support for one does not imply support for the other.

How to choose and install a Forge setup
- Identify your profile’s exact Minecraft and Forge versions. In your launcher, check the selected installation or modpack profile. Mods are version-specific, so note the precise versions before downloading anything.
- Pick a route documented for that version. For Forge, check the available OptiFine build or, for Forge 1.16.5–1.20.1, the Oculus route. The described Oculus setup also requires Embeddium.
- Verify every file and dependency. On the projects’ file pages, confirm that the Minecraft version and loader match your profile and that required dependencies are present. Do not combine renderer mods simply because they mention shaders.
- Install a compatible shader pack. Follow the selected loader’s instructions for adding the pack to your profile. CurseForge’s guide describes enabling it through Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.
- Test the pack in-game. If it does not load or renders incorrectly, check the pack’s supported versions and ask its developer about device compatibility rather than assuming every pack works with every graphics setup.

What can prevent shaders from working?
- Version mismatch: Minecraft, Forge, the shader loader, dependencies, and shader pack all need compatible releases. CurseForge warns that mods are version-specific.
- Unsupported loader: Iris cannot be added to Forge. Its supported choices are Fabric 1.16.5+ and NeoForge 1.21.1+; those versions and loaders should not be read as support for Forge.
- Conflicting renderer mods: Iris lists OptiFine as incompatible with Iris. Avoid installing competing renderer stacks together unless their own compatibility guidance explicitly supports the combination.
- Device or pack limitations: Iris warns that some shader packs may not support some devices. Compatibility varies by pack and hardware.
- Resource packs that use core shaders: Iris says these do not work while a shader pack is enabled.

Use Fabric for Minecraft 1.16.5 or later, or NeoForge for 1.21.1 or later, according to Iris’s stated support. Iris’s download page includes Sodium. You will need a profile using one of those supported loaders; NeoForge is not interchangeable with Forge.
