When a subscriber designates a console as their Home Xbox, other profiles using that console can access qualifying digital games and subscription-enabled content. That does not mean one Ultimate subscription automatically covers family members on every console, PC, or cloud-gaming device.
How Game Pass sharing works on a Home Xbox
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes Home Xbox sharing for eligible games, durable add-ons, and content enabled through a subscription, including Xbox Game Pass. In practical terms, a subscriber can designate a shared console as their Home Xbox so other profiles on that console can use qualifying content. See Microsoft’s Xbox sharing documentation and check Xbox Support’s current Home Xbox instructions for setup details and current limits.
This is a console-based license-sharing arrangement, not a family-wide subscription login. The documented model does not establish that every Ultimate benefit or account-bound feature is shared, or that the same access follows other profiles to devices away from the designated console.
What changes if family members use different devices?
Home Xbox sharing is scoped to the designated console. It should not be treated as a way to grant every family member independent Game Pass Ultimate access across multiple Xboxes, PCs, and cloud devices. If the household plays on separate devices, verify the current plan entitlements and availability in your country rather than assuming the subscriber’s Home Xbox designation covers them.

Microsoft’s Family group tools are separate from Xbox Home console licensing. Membership in a Microsoft family group does not, on the evidence available, establish a Game Pass sharing entitlement. Microsoft’s page about sharing Microsoft 365 benefits concerns that separate product, not Game Pass: Microsoft 365 Family sharing.
Cloud gaming is a separate access route
Cloud play has its own requirements; Home Xbox sharing is not a cloud-sharing method. Xbox says subscription-based cloud gaming requires an active eligible Game Pass plan, a supported game and region, a supported device, and a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Those requirements apply to cloud play, not to sharing games locally on a Home Xbox. Check Xbox Cloud Gaming for current supported games, devices, and locations.

Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that monthly cloud gaming hours are expected to begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. The announcement says the change is expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; these are Xbox’s announced policy figures and estimate, not independent usage data. Xbox also said eligible subscribers could stream without those monthly limits before the change, and noted that markets and purchase options may vary. The announcement does not specify how the change affects Home Xbox sharing, so check current terms if cloud access is central to your household’s setup. Read Xbox’s September 3, 2026 announcement.

Xbox ran a limited Friends & Family preview, announced in 2023, that covered up to five friends and family members in participating markets. Xbox’s February 21, 2023 announcement added Chile, Hungary, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sweden to the preview. That was a historical preview, not proof of a currently purchasable family plan. Which setup fits your household?
| Household setup | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Several profiles share one Xbox | Designate it as the subscriber’s Home Xbox; other profiles may access qualifying shared content on that console. |
| Family members use different Xboxes or PCs | Home Xbox sharing does not establish access across those devices. Confirm current plan entitlements and local availability. |
| Someone wants to play through the cloud | Cloud play has separate plan, game, region, device, and controller requirements; do not assume Home Xbox sharing supplies cloud access. |
| You are considering a family-group setting | Microsoft family group membership is not itself evidence of a Game Pass sharing entitlement. |
| You heard about Friends & Family | The cited offer was a limited 2023 preview; its announcement does not establish current availability. |
