Can You Use Shaders with Minecraft Forge?

Forge can run shaders with a compatible shader loader, but the right option depends on your Minecraft version, Forge build, dependencies, and shader pack.

Yes—but Forge alone does not load shader packs. You need a separate shader loader that supports your exact Minecraft and Forge versions, and the available route depends on the version you play. Iris itself does not support Forge; Oculus and newer community ports are separate projects with different requirements and levels of maturity.

Which Forge shader loader supports your Minecraft version?

Check your Minecraft version first, then match the loader, Forge build, Java runtime, and shader pack to it. A loader made for another Minecraft version is not interchangeable.

Route Version coverage in the project sources What to know
Oculus Forge 1.16.5 through 1.20.1, according to the CurseForge FAQ; its project page includes a Forge 1.20.1 release dated December 1, 2024. An unofficial Forge port. Check the exact file and its dependencies before installing.
Oculus Community Port Its page lists Minecraft 1.21.11 with Forge 61.2.0 and Java 21, and Minecraft 26.2 with Forge 65.1.0 and Java 25. Public beta with stated rendering limitations; follow this project’s instructions rather than combining them with another port’s guide.
ForgeOculus The Modrinth listing claims Forge 1.21.1 support. A separate project that names Beddium as a requirement. Verify the matching release and requirements on its Modrinth listing.
Change loader The Iris FAQ says Iris supports Fabric and Quilt down to 1.16, and NeoForge for 1.21.1 and above. Could be an alternative if your Minecraft version has no suitable Forge shader loader, but your existing mods may limit a loader change.

Oculus describes itself as an unofficial Iris fork made to work with Forge. That is the project’s description, not official support from Iris or Forge. See the Oculus project page and the Iris FAQ for their respective compatibility information.

What to check before installing

  • Exact versions: note your Minecraft version, Forge version, Java runtime, and shader-pack name. Use a loader file built for that combination.
  • Dependencies and conflicts: follow the selected project’s instructions. The Iris FAQ’s Forge route involves Embeddium and warns that Rubidium can conflict with Embeddium. The Oculus Community Port lists OptiFine as incompatible. Do not assume a requirement or conflict for one port applies to another.
  • Client versus server: shader loaders go in the client instance. The Oculus Community Port specifically says not to install it on a dedicated server.
  • Project maturity: newer Forge ports are community projects, not official Forge or Iris releases. Check the current release notes and files before using them.

How to install and enable shaders

  1. Back up or create a separate instance. Keep the test isolated from a working modpack so you can remove the loader or resolve conflicts without disrupting it. CurseForge’s general setup guide recommends a custom profile for loader-specific installations.
  2. Choose the matching loader file. Confirm the file matches your Minecraft and Forge versions, and check its listed dependencies and incompatibilities. Use the production mod JAR, not a sources JAR.
  3. Install it in the client instance’s mods folder. Add any required dependencies specified by that same project’s instructions. Do not combine competing renderer mods based on advice written for a different version.
  4. Put the shader pack in the instance’s shaderpacks folder. Keep it as the ZIP or directory specified by the loader’s instructions; downloading a pack does not automatically enable it.
  5. Launch the matching profile and select the pack. The general CurseForge route is Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. The Oculus Community Port instead directs users to Mods → Oculus Community Port → Config. Menus vary by loader.

What if shaders do not appear or Minecraft will not launch?

  • The game crashes at launch: check for a Minecraft or Forge version mismatch, a missing dependency, or a renderer conflict listed by your chosen project. Remove incompatible mods before trying again.
  • The pack is missing from the menu: confirm it is in the correct instance’s shaderpacks folder, then verify that the shader loader itself loaded in that client profile.
  • The pack loads but some effects do not work: a compatible loader does not guarantee every shader pack or feature will work. The Oculus Community Port describes itself as a public beta, not a complete Iris/Oculus world renderer. Its page reports BSL v10.1.1 and Complementary Reimagined r5.7.1 final passes activating during testing on an AMD Radeon integrated GPU; this is a narrow project-reported compatibility result, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee for other packs or hardware.
  • The project has no matching file: check its current file list and release notes. If your version has no matching Forge option, consider whether your mods allow switching to a loader supported by Iris.

Which option should you choose?

For Forge 1.16.5–1.20.1, start by checking Oculus for an exact-version file and its dependency notes. For Minecraft 1.21.11 or 26.2, the cited Oculus Community Port page lists public-beta combinations with specific Forge and Java versions; use those only if your setup matches and you accept the stated limitations. For Forge 1.21.1, ForgeOculus is a separate project whose listing claims support and requires Beddium, so verify its current release before proceeding. If none matches your setup, switching to a loader Iris supports may be more practical than forcing an incompatible Forge build.
