Its built-in infrared illuminators support the headset’s monochrome cameras, but Valve has not presented it as dedicated night-vision equipment.
Why Steam Frame can show a view in the dark
Valve lists four outward-facing monochrome cameras for tracking and monochrome passthrough, along with infrared illuminators for low-light tracking and passthrough on the Steam Frame product page. The illuminators provide the built-in light that helps keep the passthrough view available when the surroundings are dark.
That is the basis for the night-vision comparison: the headset can display a camera view in darkness, rather than relying on ordinary visible-light color passthrough.
What Valve’s “night vision” description means
In PC Gamer’s report on the Steam Frame announcement, published November 12, 2025, Valve engineer Jeremy Selan said: “You can even use the passthrough in complete darkness and you sort of get a night vision view.” The phrasing is deliberately qualified: it describes how the passthrough looks, not a formal performance rating or a claim that the headset is a night-vision device.

The cited sources give no darkness-specific range, image-resolution figure, or performance comparison with dedicated night-vision equipment. So the supported takeaway is simply that low-light passthrough is possible—not that it can identify objects at a particular distance or replace purpose-built gear.
Is an extra camera required?
No. Valve lists the Arcturus Vision Camera as an optional compatible accessory for 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture. The product page does not describe it as necessary for the monochrome low-light passthrough effect.

What Steam Frame is designed to do
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as designed primarily for low-latency PC game streaming, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR use. Its night-vision-like view is a passthrough capability within that broader headset design, not evidence of a separate night-vision mode intended for outdoor use.
