Yes. Steam Remote Play works over the internet; your host PC and the device you play on do not have to be on the same home network. The right setup depends on whether you want to stream your own games to another device or invite friends into a supported local multiplayer game.
Choose the Steam Remote Play mode you need
| Mode | What it does | Who plays | Account and game requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote Play Anywhere | Streams a game running on your gaming PC to another device, such as another computer or a supported device using the Steam Link app. | You play on a remote device while your host PC runs the game. | For PC-to-PC play, Steam says to log in on both computers. Its help text says to use the same Steam account on the remote device. |
| Remote Play Together | Streams a supported local multiplayer game from the host so friends can join the session online. | You host the game; invited friends join remotely. | The host launches the game and invites friends. Check the game’s Steam store details for Remote Play Together support. |
Valve describes Remote Play as letting you stream games from your PC to other devices “Anywhere.” Steam Remote Play and Steam’s Remote Play help distinguish streaming your own game from sharing a local multiplayer session. Not every game supports Remote Play Together, and support for Together is separate from whether you can stream a game to yourself.
What you need for an internet connection
- A running host PC: It must be on and running Steam, with the game running or ready to launch.
- A remote device: For Anywhere, connect from another PC or a supported device with the Steam Link app. Use the same Steam account for Anywhere.
- A working network path at both ends: Remote Play can cross the internet, but firewalls, blocked Steam traffic, or network restrictions can stop the connection.
- For Together: The host starts a supported local multiplayer game and invites friends to join its streamed session.
Steam Link is a streaming client, not a requirement that both devices be on the same local network. Valve’s Remote Play page describes streaming to other devices, while its help page explains the account and invitation setup.
Why a connection may fail away from home
Internet support does not mean every network permits Remote Play. Steam says the feature is not supported in most cases on public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, or access-point/client-isolated networks. A host firewall can also block the connection, and Steam notes that university and business networks may block required ports.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
See Steam’s Remote Play network guidance and Steam’s port information for the relevant network details. If you are using a managed network, its administrator may need to allow Steam traffic; there may be no setting on your device that can override network-level restrictions.
Fix choppy or unreliable streaming
First work out whether the issue is connection or stream quality. Confirm Steam is online and the host PC is available. If it connects but the video or controls are inconsistent, try these steps:

- Use Ethernet for the host PC if possible. Steam recommends a wired host connection because wireless interference can disrupt streaming.
- Reduce streaming quality or bandwidth. Lower settings can make a stream more stable when the network cannot sustain the current quality.
- Check Wi-Fi conditions and router firmware. Interference or outdated router firmware may contribute to problems.
- Use the performance overlay. Steam recommends checking it to identify variable network time.
- Check for filtering or blocked traffic. Review host firewall rules, and consider whether a school, workplace, guest, or public network restricts Steam.
Steam does not give one universal upload-speed or latency minimum for every host-and-client arrangement. Remote Play Together is described as requiring a fast internet connection, but actual quality depends on both endpoints and the route between them. Ethernet and lower quality settings are troubleshooting options, not prerequisites for using Remote Play over the internet. See Steam’s network and streaming troubleshooting guidance.
