For a Steam Deck and a desktop PC both running the Steam edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, let Steam Cloud sync your save. To move a save between Steam and another platform, use the game’s separate cross-progression feature and link both copies to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. These are different systems, so use the one that matches your devices.
Transfer a save to Steam Deck from another platform
- Update the game. Install the latest patch on the source platform. CD PROJEKT RED says the version appears beneath the game title on the main menu. See the publisher’s cross-progression instructions.
- Open Load Game. Select the Cross Progression control in the lower-right corner and follow the prompts to connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Check the setting. Cross-progression is enabled by default after linking. You can check or change it at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
- Create a new save. The publisher’s instructions say it uploads automatically. Look for a cloud icon beside the save name.
- Link the Steam Deck copy. On the Deck, launch the game, open My Rewards, and connect to the same CD PROJEKT RED account used on the source platform.
- Load the transferred save. Open Load Game and look for the uploaded save in the list.
CD PROJEKT RED Support says, “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.” Follow the in-game steps and check for the cloud icon rather than assuming that linking alone transferred an existing save.
Steam Cloud and cross-progression are different
Steam Cloud is Steam’s storage and sync service for supported games. Valve says it can store save games and other per-user data, and the Steam listing for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt includes Steam Cloud as a feature. The game’s cross-progression, by contrast, is an in-game process documented by CD PROJEKT RED that uses its account-linking flow.

The available instructions establish these as separate paths; they do not establish every platform-pair edge case or which save will win if two versions conflict. Do not treat a Steam Cloud sync problem as proof that cross-progression failed, or vice versa.

If a save is missing
First identify which path applies: Steam Cloud between Steam installations, or the game’s cross-progression between platforms. For cross-progression, check the documented steps in order:
- The game is updated to the latest patch on both ends.
- Both copies are connected to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Cross Progression is enabled under Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
- A new save was created on the source copy and has a cloud icon beside its name.
- Load Game was opened on the destination copy to look for that save.
For a Steam Deck and Steam PC, check Steam Cloud’s sync status and allow any pending sync to finish before changing devices. Steam Cloud is the relevant Steam feature, but its presence does not guarantee every sync attempt succeeds.

CD PROJEKT RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was Steam Deck Verified on March 11, 2022. The company also described it as Verified in investor materials dated March 29, 2024. Those are dated confirmations, not proof of the game’s live store rating on October 4, 2026.

Valve defines Verified as working well on Steam Deck by default, and also uses the Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown categories. Its compatibility information explains that ratings are reviewed over time and may change as the Deck evolves. Check the game’s Steam store page for its current badge rather than relying on older announcements.
