Can You Use the Same Steam Library on Two Computers?

You can install your Steam library on multiple computers, but one account cannot reliably support two simultaneous players. Here is how Steam Families, game copies, saves, and Offline Mode work.

Yes. You can sign in to the same Steam account on two computers, install its games on both, and move between them without buying the library again. Steam says there is no limit to the number of machines on which you can access an account and its library.

The important catch is that one Steam account is not a supported way for two people to play at the same time. For separate household users, Steam Families is the appropriate option—but two people playing the same game simultaneously generally need two owned copies.

Using your Steam library on a second computer

Your Steam library means the games activated on your Steam account. Installing Steam or copying game files to another computer does not transfer ownership; access comes from signing in to the account that owns the games.

Steam’s account guidance says the library can be accessed from as many machines as desired. On the second computer:

  1. Install the Steam client from Steam’s official website.
  2. Sign in with the account that owns the games.
  3. Complete Steam Guard verification if requested.
  4. Open Library, select a game, and choose Install.
  5. Choose the installation drive and wait for the download to finish.

You do not need to repurchase a game simply because you bought a second PC, laptop, or handheld. The second computer still needs compatible hardware and an operating system supported by that particular title. A Windows purchase does not guarantee a native macOS or Linux version, and Linux or SteamOS compatibility through Proton varies by game.

Can both computers use the same account at once?

Not as a supported arrangement. The restriction applies to the Steam account, not to the number of computers where the games are installed. Starting one game on one computer and another game on the second does not turn one account into two licenses.

Steam says multiple users cannot play simultaneously with the same account. Concurrent sessions can eventually produce an invalid-session or “Invalid Steam UserID Ticket” error and force one user to sign in again. Installing the same game twice does not change that rule. See Steam’s account-use guidance.

Do not solve this by giving another person your password. That exposes the account’s library, wallet, purchase history, and security settings. Steam advises users not to share account login information; use separate accounts instead.

How two people can share Steam games

For people in the same household, Steam Families allows family members to use their own Steam accounts while accessing eligible games from one another’s libraries. A Steam Family can contain up to six members, subject to Steam’s household and account requirements.

Ownership does not change. The person who bought a game remains its owner, while other family members receive access under Steam’s sharing rules. Each person keeps separate achievements and personal progress.

Not every game is eligible. Restrictions can involve publisher opt-outs, third-party accounts or launchers, subscriptions, region limits, private-game settings, DLC, operating-system compatibility, or other technical conditions. Steam also warns that cheating or fraud by a member playing a shared game can affect family-sharing privileges and lead to account action, including a VAC ban in relevant cases.

Can two family members play the same game simultaneously?

One owned copy is not enough for two simultaneous players of the same game. Steam Families can let family members play different available games at the same time, but the family needs two copies of a particular title for two members to play that title concurrently.

Situation What happens
One person uses one account on two computers Supported for moving between computers, but not for two simultaneous users.
Two people use one account Not supported; sessions may invalidate one another.
Two separate family accounts play different shared games Generally possible when the games are eligible.
Two separate family accounts play the same game Requires two owned copies of that game.

For example, if a family has one copy of Portal 2, one member can play it while another plays a different eligible family game. To have both members play Portal 2 at once, the family needs a second copy. Different DLC ownership can also affect which copy is used and whether a save is compatible with the available DLC configuration.

Will your saves transfer to the second computer?

Often, but not automatically for every game. Steam Cloud can synchronize saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user data when the game supports it and the developer has configured the relevant files for synchronization.

Check the game’s Steam page or client information for Steam Cloud support. Even with Cloud enabled, some games synchronize only certain files. Local saves, manually installed mods, mod-manager data, configuration files, Workshop downloads, and external-launcher saves may need separate setup. Cross-platform behavior is also game-dependent.

Before switching computers:

  1. Exit the game normally.
  2. Wait for Steam to finish syncing.
  3. Check that Steam is not reporting a cloud-sync problem.
  4. Start the game on the second computer.
  5. If Steam shows a conflict, compare timestamps and select the save with the intended progress.

Back up important saves before resolving a conflict. Offline play can delay synchronization and create conflicts when a newer local save meets an older cloud copy. Steam notes that recovery of lost Cloud data may not be possible.

Using Steam Offline on the second computer

Steam Offline Mode can be useful when one person wants to play a compatible single-player game without an active connection, but it is not a dependable family-sharing workaround and should not be treated as a way to bypass simultaneous-use rules.

Steam’s Offline Mode instructions require preparation while online:

  1. Start Steam online and select Remember me.
  2. Update Steam and the intended game completely.
  3. Launch the game once while online to confirm it works.
  4. Ensure the account credentials are saved on that computer.
  5. Choose Steam → Go Offline.

Games requiring an active connection, an external launcher, or online services will not necessarily work offline. Multiplayer, achievements or features requiring Steam’s network, updates, and Cloud synchronization may also be unavailable. Reconnect carefully so locally changed saves do not overwrite the wrong cloud version.

Can you avoid downloading the game twice?

You can use Steam’s supported transfer features where available. Steam clients on the same network may be able to transfer game files locally, subject to client settings and the game’s state. You can also start a download remotely through the Steam website or Steam Mobile app when Steam is running on the target computer; see Steam’s Remote Downloads support page.

These options transfer or initiate installation files only. They do not transfer ownership, create another license, or permit two people to play through one account simultaneously.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely explanation or fix
The game is installed but Steam says you do not own it Check that the second computer is signed in to the account that purchased the game. An installation folder alone does not prove ownership.
Steam signed you out on the other computer The same account was active in multiple sessions. Stop using the account simultaneously, or use separate accounts through Steam Families where eligible.
The save is missing Check Steam Cloud support and status, confirm the first computer finished syncing, and check whether the game or an external launcher stores saves locally.
A cloud conflict appears Compare timestamps, back up important saves, and choose the version containing the intended progress. Offline play commonly makes conflicts more likely.
A family member cannot launch a game Check eligibility, publisher restrictions, third-party logins, subscriptions, region, private-game status, operating-system support, and whether another member is using the only copy.
The game has the wrong DLC Steam Families may select among family members’ copies. Different DLC configurations can affect the launch and save compatibility.

Bottom line

  • One person, two computers: yes—sign in to the same account and install the library.
  • Two people, one account: no—not as a supported simultaneous-use setup.
  • Two people, separate accounts: Steam Families may provide access to eligible games; playing the same game at the same time requires two copies.
