Not through an officially documented Nintendo feature. Nintendo’s support instructions reviewed here do not explain how to turn a smartphone into a Switch controller. An unofficial Android app called JoyCon Droid is described by its maintainers as a workaround, but it requires compatible Bluetooth HID support and, for pairing with Switch firmware 12.0.0 or later, a root-based Bluetooth device-class change. It is technical and device-dependent, not a dependable plug-and-play option. If you need a supported controller, pair a Joy-Con through the console’s Controllers menu.
Does the Nintendo Switch App turn your phone into a controller?
No controller-emulation instructions appear in the Nintendo Switch App compatibility and support material reviewed from Nintendo Support. The documentation covers app compatibility, but does not describe using the phone to control Switch games. That is a statement about Nintendo’s published guidance, not proof that no third-party or experimental method exists.
Can an Android phone work as a controller?
JoyCon Droid is a community-made Android app whose maintainers describe using a phone to emulate a Switch controller. It is not an official Nintendo solution, and its requirements make it unsuitable as a guaranteed quick fix.
The maintainer documentation says Android version and Bluetooth HID profile support matter. For pairing with Switch firmware 12.0.0 and later, it describes a Bluetooth device-class workaround that requires root access. Compatibility and setup can vary by phone, so check the maintainer’s current requirements for your specific device before deciding whether to try it.

#1 Best Overall
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
The app is not available through Google Play; its maintainers point to their GitHub releases. Avoid unofficial download mirrors. Rooting and changing Bluetooth behavior involve technical and device-specific trade-offs, and the maintainers’ claims are not Nintendo support or an independent compatibility guarantee.
Which option makes sense?
| Option | Officially documented as a controller? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| JoyCon Droid on Android | No; it is a community workaround. | Phone compatibility, Android HID support, and root-based Bluetooth changes for current Switch firmware may be required. |
| Nintendo Joy-Con | Yes; Nintendo documents pairing. | A physical controller that you pair from the console menu; the game and grip orientation affect how it is used. |
| Nintendo Switch App | No, not in the reviewed official guidance. | Nintendo’s app documentation does not provide game-controller emulation instructions. |
If you want a temporary experiment and are comfortable with Android-level configuration, JoyCon Droid may be worth investigating against its current requirements. If you want a supported, straightforward physical controller, use Joy-Con instead.

How to pair Joy-Con with a Switch
- Wake the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED console.
- On the HOME Menu, open Controllers, then select Change Grip and Order.
- Hold the Joy-Con’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Follow the on-screen prompt to confirm the grip orientation.
Pairing does not itself decide whether the Joy-Con will be used together as a grip or individually as a horizontal controller. Follow the on-screen orientation prompt and check the game’s supported control options. Nintendo’s pairing instructions cover the official process.

Nintendo Support says, “In most circumstances, up to eight wireless controllers can be connected to a console.” That is not a guaranteed count for every setup: Nintendo notes that controller type, features, and Bluetooth audio use can change the effective maximum. See Nintendo’s controller connection guidance for the qualification.
