You can install Steam, sign in to the same account, and access its library on two computers—or more. The important limitation is that one Steam account is generally intended for one active player at a time, so it is not a supported way for two people to play independently on both computers simultaneously.
What you can and cannot do
| Situation | Supported? |
|---|---|
| Use the same Steam account on a desktop and laptop | Yes |
| Switch between two computers at different times | Yes |
| Authorize multiple computers | Yes; Steam says there is no limit to the number of authorized machines |
| Have two people play separate games using one account at the same time | Generally no |
| Stream a game from one computer to another device | Yes, with Steam Link or Remote Play |
Steam’s Steam Guard guidance says there is no limit to the number of machines that can be authorized. That does not mean one account provides multiple simultaneous player entitlements.

How to use your account on a second computer
- Install the Steam client on the second computer from an official Steam source.
- Sign in with the account owner’s credentials.
- Complete Steam Guard verification if Steam requests a code.
- Open your Library.
- Install the game you want to play.
- Launch it normally.
Steam and the games are installed separately on each computer. Signing in on the second machine does not automatically copy the game files from the first one. You can copy or transfer installed files to reduce downloading, but Steam must still recognize and validate the installation.
The game must support the second computer’s operating system and meet its hardware and storage requirements. A game available in your library may still fail to run on a laptop that does not meet its technical requirements.

Can you play on both computers at the same time?
Do not rely on one Steam account for two simultaneous players. Steam’s account-use guidance warns that multiple users attempting to play at the same time can trigger an Invalid Steam UserID Ticket error and force one session to authenticate again.
That means the practical rule is:
One Steam account can be used on multiple computers, but it is not a general two-player license.
If you are one person switching between a desktop and laptop, using the same account is fine. If two people want to play separate games independently at the same time, use separate Steam accounts. If both people want to play the same multiplayer game together, each player will normally need a separate account and the required game entitlement, subject to that game’s own rules.

Do not assume that launching one client offline and another online makes simultaneous use officially supported. Offline behavior depends on the game, Steam authentication, third-party launchers, anti-cheat systems, cloud saves, and multiplayer requirements.
Playing one game offline on the second computer
Steam Offline Mode can work for supported games, but it must be prepared in advance. Steam’s official setup path is:
- Start Steam while connected to the internet.
- Make sure Remember me is enabled when you sign in.
- Allow Steam and the game to finish updating.
- Launch the game once while online and confirm that it starts.
- Open Steam > Settings > Security.
- Make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline.
Close the game and exit Steam normally before disconnecting, rather than force-quitting it.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Offline Mode is not a method for creating a second license. It is a compatibility feature for supported games. It may not work when:
- the game requires an active internet connection;
- the game uses an external launcher that requires authentication;
- Steam or the game was not successfully started online first;
- stored login information was removed;
- the title requires online multiplayer, anti-cheat, or other connected services.
Steam features that require a network connection, including updates and many online services, are unavailable while offline.
Should another person use your account?
No—do not give another person your Steam password. Steam’s support guidance warns against sharing account credentials and explains that account sharing creates security and ownership risks. It can expose payment information, make account ownership harder to establish, and allow someone else to change the password or associated email address. Activity connected to the account can also create problems for the account owner.

For safer household sharing, use each person’s own Steam account and consider Steam Families. Steam currently describes Steam Families as supporting groups of up to six people, with adult and child accounts and family-management features.
Steam Families is different from logging into one account on two computers:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Each person keeps a separate Steam identity.
- Achievements, friends, and account security remain separate.
- Shared games depend on Steam Families rules and the game’s eligibility.
- It does not create unlimited copies of every game.
- Playing the same game simultaneously may still require separate copies or entitlements, depending on the title.
When Steam Link or Remote Play is a better option
If your goal is simply to play from another room or use a second device as a screen, Steam Link or Remote Play may be more suitable than installing a second independent copy.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
With Remote Play:
- the main computer runs the game;
- the second device receives the streamed video and sends back input;
- the host computer must be powered on, running Steam, and logged in;
- network quality and host hardware affect the experience.
Steam Link does not run two independent copies of a game and does not give two people separate simultaneous use of one account. It is game streaming from one host to another device.
Common problems and fixes
The first computer stopped working after I signed in on the second
The two clients may be attempting to use the same account actively. Steam’s account-use guidance says simultaneous sessions can be invalidated, sometimes producing an Invalid Steam UserID Ticket. Stop using the game or Steam session on one computer and sign in on the computer you want to use.
Steam keeps asking for a Steam Guard code
A new or unrecognized computer may require verification. Repeated prompts can also occur when credentials, cookies, or related stored data are deleted by privacy software or when the device was deauthorized. Only enable Remember me on a private, trusted computer; do not save credentials on a public or shared machine.
The game will not launch in Offline Mode
Reconnect to the internet and confirm that Steam and the game are updated. Launch the game once online, close it normally, check the credential-saving setting under Steam > Settings > Security, and then use Steam > Go Offline. If it still fails, the game or its external launcher may require an active connection.
I used Steam on a borrowed or public computer
Do not leave your account signed in. Sign out, avoid saving credentials, and use Steam’s account-security controls to remove authorization from a computer you no longer trust. If you suspect that someone accessed the account, change the Steam password and the associated email password, review authorized devices and purchases, enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, and contact Steam Support if necessary.
