One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSome PlayStation 3 consoles play original PlayStation 2 game discs, but most do not. Compatibility is determined by the PS3’s exact CECH model, not by the PS3 name alone. PlayStation Japan lists the CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 series as supporting PS2-format software, while Sony manuals for several later models explicitly say PS2 software will not play. Read the complete model number on your console and verify that exact regional model in its official documentation before buying or inserting a PS2 disc.
What the answer depends on
“PS3” describes an entire family of consoles released in multiple hardware revisions and markets. Those revisions do not share one backward-compatibility specification. A launch-era unit can have a different disc capability from a later slim or other revision even when both are sold simply as PlayStation 3.

The relevant distinction here is physical PS2-format software: an original PS2 game disc inserted into the PS3’s optical drive. The official evidence available for this question does not establish one complete worldwide list of every compatible and incompatible SKU. It does establish a clear rule: model-level verification is mandatory, and the Japanese A00/B00 listing must not be treated as a universal list for every country.

PlayStation Japan identifies the CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 series as supporting PS2-format software, including PS2-format DVDs. That is a region-specific official listing. The same support information says PS2-format software does not run on other PS3 series in that model context.

Because regional suffixes and revisions matter, do not infer that a console with a similar-looking number from another market has identical behavior. A North American, European, or other regional unit needs its own model-specific documentation. The A00/B00 evidence is useful for identifying a documented family, not for declaring every PS3 with a vaguely similar label compatible.
| Model evidence | What the official material says | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| CECH-A00 series | PlayStation Japan lists PS2-format software among playable disc types. | Evidence of compatibility for this Japanese series; confirm the exact console label and market. |
| CECH-B00 series | PlayStation Japan lists PS2-format software among playable disc types. | Evidence of compatibility for this Japanese series; confirm the exact console label and market. |
| CECHH01 | Sony’s CECHH01 Quick Reference Guide states: “This system is not compatible with and will not play PlayStation®2 format software.” | Treat this model as incompatible with original PS2-format game discs. |
| CECHL01 | Sony documentation identifies the system as not compatible with PS2-format software. | Do not buy PS2 discs expecting them to run on this model. |
| CECHK01 | Sony documentation identifies the system as not compatible with PS2-format software. | Do not buy PS2 discs expecting them to run on this model. |
| CECH-2101A / CECH-2101B | Sony manuals state that these systems are not compatible with PS2-format software. | Original PS2 discs are not supported on these named models. |
| CECH-2501A | Sony manual states that this system is not compatible with PS2-format software. | Original PS2 discs are not supported on this named model. |
The incompatible examples above are not an exhaustive list of every later PS3. They demonstrate why checking the precise CECH identifier is safer than relying on release-year labels such as “fat” or “slim.”
How to find your PS3’s full CECH model number
- Power the console off. Unplug it if you need to move it so the identification label is visible safely.
- Locate the product label. Look on the rear or underside of the console, depending on the chassis design. Find the line beginning with
CECH. - Record every character. Write down the complete identifier, including the letters, hyphen, digits, and final regional suffix. “CECH” by itself is not enough;
CECHH01and another CECH revision can have different disc support. - Check the console’s market. Note where the unit was sold or imported from. The Japanese A00/B00 support listing should not be applied automatically to a differently marketed unit.
- Open the official manual or support page for that exact code. Search the documentation for “PS2 format,” “PlayStation 2 format software,” or the disc-compatibility table. A statement that the system “is not compatible with and will not play” PS2-format software is decisive for that model.
- Resolve uncertainty before purchasing. If the label is damaged, incomplete, or inconsistent with the seller’s description, ask for a clear photograph of the model label. Do not use a generic “backward-compatible PS3” claim as a substitute for the full code.
This procedure is more reliable than judging the console by its size, number of USB ports, storage capacity, packaging, or whether it was advertised as an early model. Those visible traits do not establish the disc capability of a particular unit.

What to expect when a compatible PS3 reads a PS2 disc
On a model documented as supporting PS2-format software, insert the original disc with the console’s normal disc-loading procedure and select the disc entry that appears in the XMB. The game still has to be a valid PS2-format disc and the console must be able to read it. A scratched, damaged, counterfeit, or otherwise unreadable disc can fail even when the model itself is compatible.
Compatibility is not a guarantee that every title from every market will operate identically. Sony manuals include disc and regional playback caveats. Those warnings matter when a game was imported, when the disc standard differs from the console’s market, or when a title uses unusual accessories or software features. Verify the title and region requirements separately rather than treating “compatible PS3” as a promise for every PS2 release.
On a model whose manual excludes PS2 software, the expected result is not a missing setting that can be enabled. The console may reject the disc, fail to present it as playable software, or otherwise refuse to start it. Repeatedly cleaning or reinserting the same disc cannot turn an unsupported model into a compatible one.

A special case: SingStar disc swapping
Sony described a narrow Disc Swap feature for SingStar. A player could start a PS3 SingStar session with a PS3 SingStar disc and then swap in supported PS2 SingStar discs for tracks. This was a feature of the SingStar software and its supported disc-swapping flow, not general PS2 backward compatibility.

Therefore, a PS3 that cannot run ordinary PS2 games does not become a PS2-compatible console because a SingStar disc-swap procedure exists. The exception applies to the documented SingStar use case only; it should not be used for action games, role-playing games, sports titles, or other PS2 software.
Can a system update add PS2 compatibility?
No official guidance supplied for this question presents a firmware update as a way to add PS2 disc support to a model that lacks it. Sony’s PS3 support material recommends keeping system software current and listed version 4.93 on the support page consulted for this topic. That update guidance concerns software maintenance; it does not change the hardware model’s published PS2 compatibility.

Update the console if you need security, network, or general system fixes, but do not buy an incompatible PS3 expecting an update to unlock PS2 games. Likewise, an adapter, cable, or controller accessory cannot supply the missing console-level disc support. Accessories can affect how you control a game or connect a display; they do not rewrite the model’s compatibility specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a way to play a PS2 title
Once you know the exact PS3 model, choose the option that matches how you want to access the game and whether original physical media matters.
| Option | Best when | Key limitation or check |
|---|---|---|
| Use your compatible PS3 | You already own a PS3 documented for PS2-format discs and want to use original media. | Confirm the complete CECH code, regional documentation, disc condition, and title-specific caveats. |
| Use original PS2 hardware | Your PS3 model is listed as incompatible or you want the broadest original-console path. | You need a working PS2, suitable cables, a memory card where the game requires one, and the original disc. |
| Use an officially supported remaster or re-release | The particular game has a legitimate modern release and you prefer newer hardware or features. | Availability varies by title and region; confirm that the specific game, edition, and platform are officially offered. |
The evidence for PS3 compatibility does not establish that any particular PS2 title has a remaster or re-release. Check the game’s own publisher or platform listing rather than assuming one exists.

Checklist before buying a used PS2 disc for a PS3
- Record the PS3’s full
CECHmodel number from the physical label. - Match that exact code and region to an official manual or support document.
- Look for an explicit PS2-format software statement, not just “plays older games” in a marketplace listing.
- Confirm that the disc is an original PS2 game and inspect it for deep scratches, warping, or damage.
- Check whether the title is imported and whether the console documentation warns about regional playback.
- Keep the seller’s return terms in case the disc is unreadable or the listing misidentifies the model.
- Do not count a current system update, an adapter, or the SingStar disc-swap feature as proof of ordinary PS2-game support.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Relying on the PS3 generation name
“I have a PS3” is not a compatibility diagnosis. Two consoles with different CECH codes can have opposite answers. Always identify the complete code first.
Using a regional list as a worldwide chart
The A00/B00 support evidence comes from PlayStation Japan. Regional suffixes and documentation can differ, so use it as evidence for those Japanese families and then verify the documentation for an imported or locally sold console.
Assuming every early-looking console works
Exterior appearance and age are clues at most. Sony’s named incompatible manuals include models that buyers may encounter in used listings. The model label, not the seller’s shorthand, controls the decision.
Interpreting a failed disc as proof of incompatibility
A bad disc, a dirty optical drive, a regional issue, or an unsupported title can all produce a failure. First establish whether the model is documented as compatible; only then troubleshoot the disc and drive.
Interpreting one successful SingStar swap as broad support
SingStar’s disc swap was intentionally narrow. Success with that feature does not mean another PS2 game will boot.
Bottom line for buyers and owners
A PS3 accepts PS2 games only when its exact hardware revision is one of the models documented for PS2-format software. PlayStation Japan lists CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 series, while Sony manuals explicitly exclude CECHH01, CECHL01, CECHK01, CECH-2101A/B, and CECH-2501A. Because the published evidence is not a complete global matrix, read the full CECH number on your console and confirm the matching regional manual before spending money on PS2 discs. If the manual says the system will not play PS2-format software, use original PS2 hardware or an officially supported release of the game instead.
