Usually, you do not need to convert an HEVC (H.265) file just because it uses HEVC. OBS can play supported video files as a Media Source, while its streaming encoder is configured separately. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS, and its HLS instructions also document HEVC with OBS as a compatible encoder. Test the file in OBS and confirm that the outgoing encoder and YouTube ingestion protocol are a supported combination before changing the source file.
Why an HEVC file and an HEVC stream are different questions
OBS treats a video file added as a Media Source as input to a scene. Separately, OBS has streaming-output settings that determine the encoder used to send the live video to YouTube. An HEVC input file therefore does not establish that OBS will pass its compressed bitstream through unchanged; the official OBS documentation describes media sources and output encoder selection separately and does not document HEVC passthrough. Configure and verify both sides of the workflow.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, and MKV among the Media Source video containers, and its formats guide lists HEVC in MP4, MOV, MKV, and TS. A supported container does not guarantee playback of every HEVC profile, bit depth, audio track, or damaged file. See the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
Test the file before converting it
- Add a representative clip: In OBS, add a Media Source to a test scene and select the HEVC file. Confirm that picture and audio play correctly, including a representative section with any unusual frame rate, audio track, or HDR content. OBS documents optional hardware decoding for certain file types when the GPU has a suitable decoder; it is not required for every file.
- Choose the YouTube ingestion protocol: Check whether the stream is configured for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists HEVC among supported RTMP/RTMPS codecs. Its HLS setup instructions also document HEVC and list OBS as an HLS-capable encoder.
- Set the OBS output encoder to match: In OBS’s streaming output settings, select an encoder supported for the chosen protocol, then set the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the YouTube target. The source file’s codec does not decide these settings.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream: Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that video and audio arrive as expected before relying on the setup for an event. If playback fails, inspect the OBS log and source properties before deciding to transcode.
Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS based on the stream
| Route | HEVC documentation | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.265/HEVC. | Use a supported OBS output encoder and YouTube-recommended settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| HLS | YouTube’s HLS instructions document HEVC and list OBS as a compatible HLS output encoder. | HLS requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. |
HLS is not simply an HEVC toggle: its segment and playlist requirements need to be met by the encoder and configuration. Consult YouTube’s current HLS setup instructions for the applicable setup details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the outgoing video settings for YouTube
Use the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. YouTube’s encoder table, checked in 2026, gives distinct recommendations: for 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. Do not copy a bitrate from another codec’s column as if the recommendations were interchangeable.
- Use CBR, as YouTube recommends for live encoder settings.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the intended stream, then use the bitrate range for that codec and target in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Verify the selected protocol, stream key, and encoder together in a test stream; an HEVC-capable protocol does not guarantee that every OBS build, encoder device, or key configuration will work without adjustment.
HDR needs a separate compatibility check
If the source is HDR, do not treat SDR settings as sufficient. YouTube says HDR Live supports HEVC and requires 10-bit video, BT.2020-compatible color primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its OBS HDR instructions say the RTMPS HDR procedure requires OBS 30.1 or later and a hardware HEVC encoder; consult the current instructions for the protocol-specific setup before streaming. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

When conversion is a sensible workaround
Convert only when the file will not decode or play reliably in the installed OBS build, or when the chosen output encoder and YouTube protocol cannot be configured as a supported pair. Conversion may also be appropriate when the workflow specifically requires a different output format. The right target depends on the source resolution, frame rate, dynamic range, audio, and intended latency, so there is no single conversion preset that can be prescribed for every HEVC file.
- If the Media Source has no picture or audio, check the file’s container and source properties, then review the OBS log and whether suitable hardware decoding is available.
- If OBS plays the file but YouTube rejects or fails to receive the stream, check the outgoing encoder, protocol, stream key configuration, and YouTube’s current codec-specific settings; changing the source file may not address an output-configuration mismatch.
- If HDR looks wrong or is rejected, verify 10-bit output and the required BT.2020 and PQ/HLG color characteristics rather than converting blindly to an SDR preset.
- If HLS latency is unacceptable, consider whether the workflow can use RTMP/RTMPS instead; YouTube documents HLS as higher-latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded program that needs to stay live on YouTube without keeping OBS and a computer running, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
