Yes. YouTube can terminate a channel after three active copyright strikes within 90 days, and it may interrupt or terminate a live stream when copyrighted third-party content remains in the broadcast. But a 24/7 schedule alone is not identified in YouTube’s published copyright rules as an automatic reason for termination. The key distinction is whether the stream is interrupted, the channel receives a copyright strike, or the channel reaches YouTube’s termination threshold.
What can happen when copyrighted content is detected?
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. When it identifies a match, YouTube may display a placeholder and warn the streamer. If the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. That action can end the broadcast without, by itself, meaning the channel has been terminated. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
A separate channel-level consequence can follow if YouTube removes an active stream for copyright: the channel receives a copyright strike, and live-stream access is restricted for seven days. Another copyright strike can make that live-stream restriction 14 days. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes.
Claim, strike, and termination are different outcomes
| Outcome | What it means | Possible consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | A match to copyrighted material identified through YouTube’s Content ID system. | A claim typically does not result in a copyright strike. It is not the same as a copyright removal request. |
| Copyright removal request and strike | A copyright owner submits a valid request to remove content, and YouTube processes it. | The content can be removed and the channel can receive a strike. An active live stream removed for copyright also triggers the seven-day live-stream restriction described above. |
| Three active copyright strikes within 90 days | The channel reaches YouTube’s stated strike threshold. | The channel, along with associated channels, is subject to termination. YouTube’s wording describes a termination risk at this threshold, not automatic termination for every detected match. |
YouTube reviews copyright removal requests; a detected match or claim should not be treated as proof that a channel has already received a strike. Check the specific notice and the channel’s strike status in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.

Does streaming continuously make the risk different?
YouTube’s published live-stream copyright guidance describes scanning, warnings, and possible interruption or termination when third-party content remains. Its strike guidance sets out the three-active-strikes-within-90-days termination threshold. These pages do not say that streaming for 24 hours a day, on its own, automatically terminates a channel. A long-running broadcast can still expose a channel to repeated detection and enforcement if it contains material the channel is not authorized to use.
Copyright is not the only possible basis for channel termination: YouTube also lists repeated Community Guidelines or Terms of Service violations. This article concerns copyright outcomes, not every possible policy violation. YouTube Help: Channel or account terminations.

What if you have a license?
Having permission does not necessarily prevent YouTube’s automated live-stream process from interrupting a broadcast. YouTube instructs creators using licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, a live stream may still be interrupted when the system detects the content. Confirm the scope of your permission with the rights holder and coordinate allowlisting before going live. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
What to do after a copyright notice
- Read the notice and check YouTube Studio. Identify whether it is a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal, a completed takedown, or a strike. These have different consequences; do not assume a claim is a strike.
- If you have permission, contact the rights holder. Confirm that your license covers the material and the way you are using it, and ask the owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist for live streaming.
- If a removal is scheduled, review its deadline. YouTube says some scheduled removals provide seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. Follow the instructions and timing in the notice. About copyright removal requests.
- If a strike has been applied, assess the available resolution routes. YouTube lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, asking the claimant to retract the removal request, or submitting a valid counter notification. The applicable route depends on the circumstances.
- Use a counter notification only with a good-faith basis. YouTube describes it as a legal process. If you are unsure whether your use is lawful or the notice is valid, seek qualified legal advice before submitting one.
YouTube’s termination guidance says a creator whose channel was terminated because of copyright claims and who believes those claims are incorrect may file a counter notification; YouTube warns that this begins a legal process. YouTube Help: Channel or account terminations. Whether a particular video infringes copyright or qualifies for an exception depends on facts and applicable law; YouTube’s platform procedures do not decide every legal question.

Why a 24/7 setup does not make unauthorized use safe
Automation changes how a broadcast is kept online; it does not grant rights to the videos being streamed or exempt the channel from YouTube’s copyright systems. If you operate a continuous channel, build it around material you own or are authorized to broadcast, retain records of permissions, and arrange allowlisting where required. YouTube reported receiving over 16 million video copyright removal requests in 2022; that is a dated count of requests received, not a count of videos removed or a current annual rate. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.
