Footage and images from a cancelled Dead Rising 5 project surfaced in online discussion around February 17–18, 2023. Contemporary reports traced the material to level designer Nick Sinkewicz’s portfolio and described a work-in-progress game featuring Chuck Greene, a Mexico-inspired setting and several unfinished level concepts. The project was also referred to as Dead Rising: Dia de Los Muertos, though no official announcement established that as its final title.
How the footage surfaced
Meristation reported that users noticed the material on February 17, 2023; Insider Gaming published its report the following day, saying footage had begun circulating hours earlier. Both accounts pointed to portfolio material by Nick Sinkewicz, who describes himself on his portfolio as a level designer and technical level designer: Nick Sinkewicz’s portfolio. The reports do not establish that he had just uploaded the material when it was discovered.

The portfolio itself identifies Sinkewicz, but the project-specific details below come from contemporaneous coverage of its videos and images, rather than from project material independently accessible on the portfolio page. Insider Gaming, Meristation and Bloody Disgusting described the project as cancelled.
What the cancelled Dead Rising project reportedly showed
Chuck Greene and a Mexico-inspired setting
Reports said Chuck Greene, the protagonist of Dead Rising 2, was intended to return. The planned setting was Mexico, with both urban locations and jungle areas. Coverage referred to the project as Dead Rising 5 and as Dead Rising: Dia de Los Muertos; the latter was a name used in reporting, not an officially announced final title.

Prototype locations and encounters
Reported level concepts included Barrio, Hotel, Camps, Mayan Temple and Safehouse. Several locations were still grey-box prototypes, and the available clips were described as unfinished rather than representative of a complete game. Coverage also described camps or gang bases, zombie encounters and a planned boss encounter involving a character named El Guapo. These are reported design plans, not features confirmed for a finished release.
Meristation reported that the prototype used Unreal Engine 4. Insider Gaming also mentioned two playable characters and Souls-like elements, but those details are not established by the footage descriptions in the other coverage and should be treated cautiously.

A proposed loot-container system
Bloody Disgusting reproduced a description attributed to Sinkewicz of a “Loot Containment System” intended to organize dropped items in containers. The stated goals were to “contextualize different drops, clean up the environment, and free up some memory!” Insider Gaming reported that this approach appeared to replace the earlier ground-loot method. The clips show development work, not proof that the system reached a finished or playable game.
Why Dead Rising 5 was cancelled
Contemporary reports connect the project’s cancellation to the 2018 closure of Capcom Vancouver. GamesHub links the cancellation to the studio’s layoffs and shutdown, while Meristation also describes the studio closure and cancelled projects. The coverage does not provide a definitive first-party explanation for why Capcom cancelled this particular game, so claims that the reception of Dead Rising 4 alone caused the decision are not established.

Was Dead Rising 5 ever released?
No. The material described in these reports documents an unfinished prototype, not a released game or a publicly documented playable build. It does not show that a complete version of Dead Rising 5 existed. Dead Rising 4 is an earlier released entry, not this cancelled project; Bloody Disgusting reported in February 2023 that it was available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
