1. Check PlayStation Network status first
Open the official PlayStation Network Service Status page from a phone or computer and check it at the time the problem occurs. Pay particular attention to Account Management, Gaming and Social, and any other service shown as degraded or undergoing maintenance.

2. Record the exact error code
The message “Cannot sign in to PlayStation Network” is only a symptom. The code underneath it is usually more useful. Write down the complete code, including letters, numbers, and hyphens, then look up that exact code in PlayStation’s official error-code index.

These examples are signals, not universal fixes. A code can have a more specific cause depending on the console, account state, and current PlayStation documentation.
3. Verify the sign-in ID and reset your password
Your PlayStation sign-in ID is normally the email address associated with the PSN account. Make sure you are using the right email address, especially if several people use the console or you have more than one PlayStation account. An online ID or profile name is not necessarily the sign-in ID.
For an unknown or rejected password, use PlayStation Account Management and select:
Trouble Signing in? > Recover Your Account
You can also start password recovery from the account or sign-in menu on the PS5 or PS4. Use the reset message sent to the account’s email address, create a new password, and then try signing in again.
Do not continue guessing passwords. Repeated failed attempts can add security friction without helping you identify the real problem. A proper reset gives you a known credential and is safer than cycling through possible passwords.

Normal password recovery depends on access to the email address registered to the account. If that mailbox is closed, inaccessible, or unknown, use PlayStation’s official Online Assistant or support-contact route. The same applies if you have forgotten which email address belongs to the account.
Do not send your password, 2-step-verification backup codes, payment details, or identity documents to unofficial helpers, social-media accounts, or third-party “account unlock” services. PlayStation Support is the appropriate escalation path when automated recovery cannot verify you.
5. Treat unexpected account changes as a possible compromise
If you do not recognize a change to the account’s sign-in ID, online ID, password, or security settings, assume the account may have been compromised. Do not treat it as an ordinary incorrect-password problem. Use PlayStation’s account-recovery and support process as soon as possible.
After you regain access, review the account’s security settings, change the password to a unique one, and enable a strong sign-in method such as 2-step verification or a passkey where supported. A passkey is an optional sign-in method for supported personal devices; it is not a guaranteed repair for every existing PSN login failure.
6. Fix 2-step-verification problems
When 2-step verification (2SV) is enabled, PlayStation may require a code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. PlayStation’s setup guidance states that a code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.

If the code has not arrived
- Select Resend Code once and allow time for delivery.
- Check that the phone has cellular service and that airplane mode is disabled.
- Restart the phone and try the sign-in again.
- Confirm that you are checking the phone or authenticator app registered to this PSN account.
Avoid repeatedly requesting codes in quick succession; that can make it harder to tell which message is current.
If the registered phone is unavailable
Use one of the saved backup codes if you have them. Each backup code is intended for account recovery when the normal verification method cannot be used, so keep the remaining codes private.
If you have no backup code and cannot use the registered phone or authenticator, contact official PlayStation Support. There is no legitimate bypass tool that should be trusted with your account credentials.

If the error points to a timeout, server connection, or network problem—and PSN status is normal—verify that the console is connected to the intended network. Check the Wi-Fi network name (SSID), password, and security method. A console connected to a guest network, an old router, or the wrong access point may appear online while still failing to reach PSN correctly.
On either console, run the built-in internet connection test from the network settings. Then restart the console and home router if the problem appears local. A wired test is especially useful because it separates weak or congested Wi-Fi from account and service problems.

Optional wired-test accessory: An Ethernet cable for PS5 or PS4 can help when the likely cause is Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, or local network instability and the console is close enough to the router. It cannot correct an incorrect PSN password, inaccessible recovery email, failed 2SV, suspension, or a PlayStation Network outage.
Do not casually change advanced DNS, MTU, proxy, IPv4, or IPv6 settings. Those options can matter in specific network environments, but PlayStation warns that people unfamiliar with them should consult their internet service provider or network administrator. Also note that PS5 supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only connection; an IPv6-only router configuration must provide IPv4 as well.

If the ordinary update process fails, PlayStation also provides a USB update method. Use only the official update files and the exact folder and file names specified by PlayStation. Do not download system files from forums or unofficial mirrors.
Do not confuse updating with reinstalling
A system-software update is different from reinstalling system software. Reinstallation is a last resort and deletes data from the console. Back up saved data and other important content first, and attempt it only when the official troubleshooting instructions specifically call for it. Reinstalling will not fix an incorrect account password, lost email access, failed 2SV, PSN outage, or valid suspension.
9. Check for an account or console suspension
If the message or code indicates a restriction, check the email address associated with the PSN account, including spam and junk folders. Also review the account status through My Support, where available.
PlayStation distinguishes between:
- Account suspension: the affected account cannot use online services.
- System suspension: the console itself may be prevented from accessing online services, potentially affecting accounts that use it.
A reversed payment or chargeback can create a debt-related suspension. Codes such as WS-37368-7 and WS-116367-4 may be associated with this situation. Follow PlayStation’s support instructions to resolve the balance or dispute. A router reset, password change, Ethernet cable, or software reinstall cannot remove a valid suspension.
10. Contact official PlayStation Support
Escalate to PlayStation Support when:
- You cannot access the account’s recovery email.
- You have lost the registered 2SV phone or authenticator and have no backup codes.
- You suspect someone changed the account’s email, password, online ID, or security settings.
- You see a temporary, permanent, system, or debt-related suspension.
- You have checked service status, verified the account, tested the network, and updated the console without resolving the problem.
Use PlayStation’s official support-contact guide or Online Assistant for your country or region. Have the exact error code, your console model, the account sign-in ID if known, and a description of what changed before the failure. Never give passwords or backup codes to a person claiming to offer faster recovery outside official PlayStation channels.
