First try Steam’s basic checkout checks; then follow the branch for a card decline, prepaid card, currency mismatch, or travel-related problem. If the payment still fails, contact Steam Support with the exact error rather than repeatedly submitting it.
Start with these checks

Note what failed. Record whether you were adding Wallet funds directly or buying something, whether you used a bank card or prepaid card, the exact error message, your Steam Store country, and whether your bank shows a pending charge. Steam’s support flow includes “I am having trouble adding funds to my Steam Wallet” and asks for the precise message when a purchase fails.

Switch purchase surface. If the Steam website failed, try the Steam Client; if the Client failed, try the website.

Remove proxy interference. Disable or remove VPN and proxy software, restart Steam, and try again with accurate billing details. Steam says transactions initiated through anonymous proxies will be declined.

Do not keep resubmitting a failing payment. Steam’s unexpected purchase error guidance advises testing once or twice more, then contacting Steam Support if the error persists. Use the Help site’s purchase support flow and include the exact error and your account details.
Fix the problem that matches your error
Incorrect billing address or card declined
For an incorrect-address error, Steam says the billing details did not match the card issuer’s records. Compare the street address and postal code you entered with the information your bank has on file. If they match and Steam still rejects the payment, contact the bank. For a general card decline, verify the card number, expiration date, and CVV; the card may also be expired or invalid, subject to a transaction limit, or blocked by the bank’s fraud checks. Steam’s pages on billing-address declines and purchasing issues describe these checks.

If a failed address or CVV check left a pending authorization, Steam says it will not collect the funds the bank has placed on hold. The bank or card issuer controls when the hold is released; Steam says this can take up to 30 days, depending on the bank. Ask the issuer about the pending authorization rather than assuming it is a completed Steam charge.
Prepaid card does not work online
Some prepaid gift cards must be registered on the card issuer’s website before they can be used online. Follow the instructions printed on the card or ask the issuer how to register it. If the failed attempt created a hold, the issuer controls its release and it can take up to 30 days. See Steam’s Purchasing Issues guidance.

Wallet currency does not match the purchase
If Steam says your Wallet funds are in a different currency from the purchase, open the Store in the Steam application. A link may have taken you to a Store page for another region. Turn off any VPN or proxy and check that the page is showing your account’s Store country and currency. Steam’s Wallet currency mismatch guidance says not to use a VPN or other method to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions.
If you are traveling and the mismatch remains, Steam suggests trying the payment method by itself instead of combining it with Wallet funds. If that also fails, contact Steam Support.

You are traveling or your Store country is wrong
Steam says your current Store country is shown under Account Details and is based on your first Steam purchase. While traveling, use a payment method that matches the Store country on your account. If you have moved or live abroad for an extended period, Steam says you can update the country during a purchase using a payment method from that country; country changes are limited to once every three months. New users who created an account while traveling may need to return to their residence before setting their country. Read Steam’s Store Country guidance for the applicable case.
Steam Wallet codes cannot change an account’s Store country. Do not try to change regions with a VPN, foreign payment details, or a code bought for another country.

Your preferred payment option is missing
Steam displays available payment methods at checkout for the account’s current Store country. Availability varies by region and currency, so use the options shown there rather than relying on an old list. Steam’s Purchasing Issues page notes that PayPal is unavailable for purchases in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD following a payment-processing change that began in July 2025. If no listed option works for you, choose another available method or consider a compatible Steam Wallet code.

A Wallet code or physical Steam Wallet gift card may help if you cannot use the payment options currently offered at checkout. It is not a fix for a billing-address or card-verification failure, and it cannot change your Store country. Before buying one, confirm that its currency and region are compatible with your account and buy only from a trusted seller. Steam mentions Wallet codes as an option in its Purchasing Issues guidance and physical Wallet cards for some card-decline cases.
Recover a failed purchase without losing an eligible sale price
If the problem occurred while purchasing an item and Steam saved the failed cart, you may be able to retry it for 72 hours with its discount preserved. Use the link in Steam’s email or find the saved cart in Purchase History. Steam says this does not apply to every cart: bundles, purchases using coupons, recurring subscriptions, and attempts that failed before payment began may not qualify. Support cannot extend the cart’s 72-hour expiration. See Steam’s saved-cart FAQ.
Contact Steam Support if the cause is still unclear
Use Steam’s purchase support flow if the basic checks do not resolve the problem. Sign in and provide the exact error message, what you were trying to buy or add, and the payment method involved. If your bank shows a pending charge, include that detail and ask the bank whether it is an authorization hold. Steam Support can investigate the account-specific purchase failure; the bank or card issuer handles its own authorization and release timing.
