If you can hear VALORANT’s gunfire and music but not your teammates, start inside the game: open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, enable Party Voice Chat and Team Voice Chat, choose the intended input and output devices, and run the loopback test. Then check Windows output routing and the volume mixer. These checks separate a muted voice channel from a headset, driver, spatial-audio, Bluetooth, or Windows-service problem without buying new hardware unnecessarily.
Start with VALORANT’s own voice-chat controls
VALORANT can send team communication to a different device or channel from the one carrying the rest of the game. Hearing footsteps, menus, or gunfire therefore does not prove that voice chat is reaching your headphones. Check the game’s voice settings before changing Windows drivers or replacing a headset.

Enable both voice channels
- Launch VALORANT and select the gear icon.
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat.
- Turn on Party Voice Chat and Team Voice Chat. If one is disabled, you can hear some groups but not others.
- Confirm that the selected input and output devices are the headset and microphone you actually want to use, rather than a monitor, webcam, controller, or a previously connected USB device.
- Run the built-in loopback test. Speak normally and listen for your voice in the selected output.
Riot’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance treats these settings and the loopback test as the first diagnostic. A successful loopback means the game can send microphone audio through its selected path; it does not guarantee that every teammate is transmitting or that Windows will keep the same device selected after a reconnect.
Read the loopback result
- You hear your own voice clearly: the selected output path is functioning in VALORANT. Continue with party/team channel status and Windows per-app routing.
- You cannot hear the loopback: the problem is on the output side. Recheck the device selector, headset mute switch, headset volume wheel, and Windows output before investigating microphones.
- The meter reacts but playback is silent: VALORANT is receiving input, but the chosen playback device, Windows mixer, or headset processing is suppressing the return audio.
- The test never reacts: enable Windows microphone permissions and verify that the intended microphone is selected. This is an input fault even if your main complaint is that teammates are silent.
Check the headset and connection before software repairs
A basic physical check can eliminate a surprising number of apparent voice-chat failures. Make sure the headset plug, USB connector, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth connection is fully seated. Inspect any inline mute button and the headset’s own volume control. Also check the computer’s hardware mute key and monitor volume if the headset is connected through a display.

Play audio from another application, such as a browser video or a system sound. If that application is also silent, the fault is not specific to VALORANT and you should work through Windows output selection. If other applications play normally, return to VALORANT’s device selectors and the per-app mixer rather than assuming the headset is defective.
For a USB headset, try a different USB port without using an unpowered hub. For a 3.5 mm headset, confirm that the plug is in the headphone output and not a microphone-only jack. Wireless users should charge the headset, wake it from standby, and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices that could have become the active output.
Correct Windows output routing
Windows can route VALORANT to a different output from the system default. Microsoft’s audio guidance recommends checking the selected output, hardware connections, mute controls, and application-specific volume.

Select the intended output
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under output, select the headphones or speakers you want to use for VALORANT.
- Play the test tone shown for that device. If the tone is silent, resolve the Windows device issue before relaunching the game.
- Raise the output volume and verify that neither the Windows mute control nor the headset itself is muted.
Inspect VALORANT in the volume mixer
- With VALORANT running, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Find VALORANT in the apps list.
- Make sure its volume is above zero and it is not muted.
- Check the app’s output-device assignment. Set it to the same headphones selected as the Windows output, or reset it to the system default.
The mixer can preserve an old assignment after you unplug a USB headset or switch from speakers to Bluetooth. Changing the global default alone may not change that per-app choice, so inspect both levels.

Enable the device and make it the default
In Settings > System > Sound, open the device’s properties and confirm it is enabled. If Windows marks it as disallowed, enable it and test again. In the classic sound control panel, set the intended playback device as the default device; if your setup exposes a separate communications default, set the headset there as well. Disable audio enhancements for the device while testing. Enhancement layers can alter or suppress application audio, and turning them off gives VALORANT a plain stereo path to test.
Repair Windows audio when the route is correct
If the game and Windows both point to the right device but voice remains silent, use Windows’ repair sequence before changing in-game options repeatedly.
- Run the built-in audio troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select the audio troubleshooter and apply any recommended correction.
- Install available Windows updates and the latest driver supplied for your motherboard, sound adapter, USB headset, or wireless receiver.
- Restart the audio services. Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and restart Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). RPC is a dependency for Windows audio, so restart it only through the Services console and do not disable it. - Close VALORANT completely and reopen it after the service restart. A running game may retain a handle to the device it selected at launch.
If the troubleshooter reports that no output device exists, focus on Windows hardware detection and drivers rather than voice-channel toggles. If only VALORANT is silent while other applications still work, return to the volume mixer and the game’s output selector after the restart.
Handle USB, virtual-surround, and spatial-audio conflicts
USB and gaming headsets may rely on a manufacturer driver or a virtual-surround layer instead of presenting a simple stereo device. Riot notes that missing drivers can leave center or surround channels silent. Voice is often mixed into a center channel, so music and effects can remain audible while speech disappears.

Install the headset’s required driver
Use the driver package supplied for your exact headset model, USB sound card, or wireless receiver. Reconnect the device after installation and select it again in both VALORANT and Windows. Do not assume that a generic Windows driver provides the headset’s surround processing or channel map.
Use stereo as a diagnostic fallback
Temporarily disable virtual-surround processing and select Stereo in the headset software or Windows playback configuration. Stereo removes the center-channel dependency and is the fastest way to determine whether surround processing is the cause. If voice returns in stereo, the hardware is probably usable; leave surround disabled or reinstall its driver before trying it again.
Match VALORANT to Windows spatial audio
When Windows spatial audio is intentionally enabled, set VALORANT’s spatialization option to Auto-Detect so the game can follow that configuration. If spatial audio is not needed, turn it off in Windows and use Stereo in the headset software. Riot’s Patch 8.0 notes state: Starting in Patch 8.0, VALORANT will support third party spatialization software for headphones.
Support for the software does not mean every driver, virtual-surround mode, or channel layout is compatible, so test with the simplest configuration first.

Bluetooth headsets expose a high-quality stereo mode and a lower-bandwidth hands-free mode for calls. Switching modes can change the available microphone and playback channels, and spatial-audio glitches have been reported with this combination.

Riot reports that disabling Hands-Free Telephony solved the issue in its testing. In Windows, open the Bluetooth headset’s device properties in the classic sound or Bluetooth device interface, open the Services tab when it is available, and clear Hands-Free Telephony. The exact panel can differ by Windows version and adapter. Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then select its stereo playback endpoint in Settings > System > Sound.
This change disables the headset’s built-in microphone. Use a laptop microphone, USB microphone, or another input device if you need voice chat while keeping Bluetooth stereo playback. If you need the headset microphone itself, re-enable Hands-Free Telephony and test without Windows spatial audio instead; Bluetooth bandwidth and profile switching may be the limiting factor.

Although a microphone permission problem primarily affects what you send, it can make VALORANT’s voice configuration appear broken and prevents a meaningful loopback test.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Enable Microphone access.
- Enable permission for apps to access the microphone and, where shown, desktop apps to access it.
- Close and reopen VALORANT, then select the intended microphone under Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and run loopback again.
If the microphone meter moves but you still hear no teammates, permissions are not the remaining output fault. If the meter never moves, test the microphone in Windows Sound settings and verify that another application is not holding exclusive control of it.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

When replacing the headset is justified
Buy a replacement only after the loopback test, Windows test sound, alternate application, and driver checks show a hardware or compatibility fault. A new headset will not correct a disabled VALORANT channel, a muted mixer entry, or an output assigned to the wrong device.

For a replacement, compare wired versus wireless connection, dedicated microphone quality, Windows driver support, Stereo versus virtual-surround behavior, Bluetooth Hands-Free limitations, comfort, and the return policy. Those factors address the failure modes above; a higher price alone does not.
Final verification after each change
- Close VALORANT and reconnect or reconfigure the headset.
- Set the intended Windows output and confirm a Windows test sound.
- Launch VALORANT, select the same device under Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, and enable the channels you use.
- Run loopback before joining a match.
- Join a party or team channel and ask one teammate to transmit while you watch for the voice indicator.
Changing one layer at a time makes the result interpretable. Once loopback and teammate audio both work, leave the stable Stereo or spatial-audio setting in place instead of re-enabling multiple processing layers simultaneously.
