The fastest fixes are to check that you are not deafened, raise the affected person’s individual volume, select the correct Discord output device, and check Windows’ per-app Volume mixer. The right fix depends on the pattern: one silent person points to a user-volume or microphone problem, while silence from everyone points to Discord’s output route, the operating system, your headset, the client, or a service problem.
Work through the nine fixes below in order. They cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android, and supported desktop browsers without jumping straight to driver updates or reinstalling Discord.

First, identify what is actually silent
Before changing settings, join a voice channel or call and ask someone to speak. Then compare Discord with another application, such as a browser video or music player. This two-minute test prevents you from reinstalling Discord when Windows is sending all audio to a monitor or Bluetooth device.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you hear | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Only one person is silent | That person’s individual Discord volume, their mute state, or their microphone/input path |
| Everyone is silent in one server or channel | Server deafen, channel configuration, permissions, a voice-region problem, or a channel-specific connection issue |
| Everyone is silent across Discord | Discord’s output device, operating-system mixer, headset route, client state, network, or an outage |
| Discord is silent, but other apps work | Discord output settings, per-app routing, voice settings, audio subsystem, browser permissions, or the Discord installation |
| Other apps and system sounds are silent too | The selected system output, headset, Bluetooth connection, audio driver, or operating system |
| You hear people, but the audio is robotic or intermittent | Network instability, VPN or firewall interference, the voice connection, Bluetooth profile changes, system load, or the audio subsystem |
| The desktop app is silent but Discord in a browser works | Desktop-client settings, cached state, audio-subsystem compatibility, device routing, or a damaged installation |
| You see RTC Connecting, No Route, ICE Checking, or Waiting for Voice Server | Network, VPN, firewall, voice-region, Discord service, or another connection problem rather than a simple speaker-volume setting |
If the problem is only one person, start with Fix 1. If all applications are silent, skip ahead to your operating system and headset checks in Fix 3 and Fix 7.

Fix 1: Check deafen, server-deafen, and individual user volume
Look at the voice controls in Discord before changing anything complicated. A slashed headset icon means that you are deafened, which disables incoming voice audio. Click it to remove deafen.
Being muted normally affects your microphone and outgoing audio; it does not normally stop you from hearing other people. A server administrator can separately server-deafen you, however. Server deafen blocks incoming voice audio and cannot be removed from your own settings, so an administrator or server owner must lift it.
If only one person is silent
- Desktop or browser: right-click the person in the voice channel or call.
- Find their individual volume slider and raise it. A slider at zero can make a person appear active while remaining inaudible to you.
- iPhone or Android: long-press the person’s profile and raise their volume slider.
Discord documents these controls, along with deafen and server restrictions, in its official Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide.

The affected person should become audible immediately after you remove deafen or raise their individual volume. If their individual volume is already normal but you still hear nothing, ask whether anyone else can hear them. If nobody can, the problem is probably their microphone or Discord input path, not your speakers. If only one server is affected, ask an administrator whether you have been server-deafened or whether that channel has an unusual configuration.
Discord’s Connect permission controls whether someone can join a voice channel. Speak controls whether they can transmit microphone audio. They are not interchangeable: having a Speak restriction explains why somebody cannot talk, not usually why you cannot hear them.
Fix 2: Select the correct output device inside Discord
Discord can send voice audio to a different device from the one you are using for games, music, or system sounds. This is especially common when a PC has laptop speakers, a monitor, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, a docking station, and virtual audio software installed at the same time.
Desktop and browser
- Open User Settings.
- Select Voice & Video.
- Under Voice, open Output Device.
- Select the exact physical headset or speakers you are using. Do not rely on Default while troubleshooting.
- Raise Output Volume and make sure it is not at zero.
- Leave the voice channel, then rejoin it.
Choose the device by its actual name rather than guessing. An HDMI or DisplayPort monitor, a capture card, a virtual cable, Voicemeeter, a voice changer, or streaming software can appear as a valid Discord output even though no sound will come from the headset on your head. Discord’s guide also recommends checking both Output Device and Output Volume.
If you connected the headset after Discord was already open, rejoining may be enough; a full restart is covered in Fix 4.
Mobile
In the current mobile app, open Avatar → Settings gear → Voice. Select or verify the relevant voice and audio controls, then check the in-call audio route as described in Fix 7. Mobile labels can vary by phone model and Discord version.
If this does not work
If the device you want is missing from Discord’s list, check whether Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android detects it at all. If the operating system cannot see the headset, Discord cannot use it reliably. If Discord’s built-in route is correct but only Discord remains silent, continue with the operating-system mixer and voice reset.

Fix 3: Correct the operating system’s output and per-app volume
System audio and Discord audio can use different destinations. On Windows, an app has its own volume and output assignment, independent of the system-wide default. Microsoft specifically identifies this per-app routing as a cause of situations where system sounds work but one application does not.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find Discord.
- Raise Discord’s volume and make sure it is not muted.
- Set Discord’s Output device to the same headset or speakers you selected in Discord.
- Return to Settings → System → Sound → Output and select the intended playback device there too.
- If necessary, open More sound settings → Playback and make the correct device the default.
Discord may not appear in Volume mixer until it is actively producing audio. Join a call and ask someone to speak before opening the mixer.
Also check the physical volume controls on the headset, keyboard, monitor, dock, and Windows taskbar. A monitor selected as the output can make Discord appear perfectly connected while sending voices to speakers you are not using.
macOS
Open System Settings → Sound → Output and select the headphones or speakers you actually want to hear. Then verify the same device under Discord’s User Settings → Voice & Video → Output Device. Quit and relaunch Discord after changing the output if the call remains silent.
Linux
Choose the intended output in your desktop environment’s sound settings, then check whether your environment provides a per-application audio mixer. Select the physical output rather than a disconnected HDMI device, virtual cable, or unused Bluetooth profile, and explicitly select the same device in Discord. Discord’s supported Linux distributions and minimum client requirements can change, so use the current Discord OS and system requirements page for compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest the result
Play another application through the same output. If that also fails, stop treating this as a Discord-only issue: troubleshoot the headset, Bluetooth connection, system output, or driver first. If every other application works, continue to Fix 4 and Fix 5.
Fix 4: Reconnect the headset and restart the voice session
A device that was unplugged, renamed, put to sleep, or switched between profiles can leave Discord connected to an old audio endpoint. Reinitialize both the hardware and the voice session.
- Leave the Discord call or voice channel.
- Fully quit Discord rather than merely minimizing the window. On Windows, also quit it from the system tray if it is still running; on macOS, use the application’s Quit command.
- Unplug and reconnect a wired or USB headset.
- Try another USB port, preferably one connected directly to the computer rather than through a problematic hub or dock.
- For Bluetooth, disconnect and reconnect the headset. If necessary, remove and pair it again in the operating system.
- Restart Discord and rejoin the call.
Discord recommends a complete application restart, reconnecting peripherals, trying another USB port, and restarting the device as part of its troubleshooting guidance. The expected result is that Discord redetects the output and voices return after you rejoin.
On Windows, you can test Run as administrator once if a permission or device-access conflict is suspected. Treat this as a late diagnostic step, not a permanent solution or a general requirement to run Discord with elevated privileges.
Fix 5: Reset Voice & Video settings and switch the audio subsystem
Use this fix when the output device is present but Discord’s voice configuration seems stuck, particularly after replacing a headset, renaming an audio device, or changing drivers.

- Open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Scroll to Debugging.
- Select Reset Voice and Video Settings.
- Confirm the reset.
- Return to the voice settings and select your intended output device again.
This resets Discord’s voice configuration, so you may need to reselect your microphone, output device, and processing preferences afterward. It will not fix a physically disconnected headset, a muted Windows app, server deafen, or a Discord outage.
Try Standard and Legacy on Windows
- Remain in User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Find Audio Subsystem.
- Switch from Standard to Legacy, or from Legacy to Standard.
- Restart Discord if it asks you to.
The Standard/Legacy switch can help with compatibility between Discord, a particular headset, and an audio driver, but it is not a universal fix. Current official troubleshooting emphasizes Standard and Legacy; do not look for an Experimental option unless your own Discord version actually shows one.
For choppy or intermittent voice
If the problem is connection-related rather than complete silence, try disabling Ensure Quality of Service High Packet Priority in Discord’s voice settings and reconnect. This setting is more relevant to intermittent or unstable voice than to a completely misrouted output device.
Fix 6: Check Discord’s connection, VPN, firewall, voice region, and status
Output settings will not repair a voice connection that never reaches the voice server. Focus on this fix if Discord shows RTC Connecting, Connecting, No Route, ICE Checking, or Waiting for Voice Server, or if audio drops in and out.
- Check the live Discord Status page, especially Voice, Desktop, Web, iOS, and Android.
- Restart Discord, your computer or phone, and your router or modem.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN. If voice works without it, the VPN route or policy is involved.
- Confirm that Discord is allowed through your firewall and security software.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot. This distinguishes a local or managed network problem from a Discord client problem.
- On a school or work network, ask the network administrator whether voice traffic is restricted.
- If you administer the affected channel, test another voice region through Voice Channel Settings → Overview → Region Override.
Discord associates these connection errors with network interference such as VPNs and firewalls and recommends checking the network, firewall, VPN compatibility, and voice region in its voice connection error guide. Waiting for Voice Server can indicate a broader service problem, so check status before changing local audio settings.
A status page is only a live snapshot. For example, a page that shows all systems operational on one date does not prove that there is no outage when you are reading this. If the status page reports an incident, wait for recovery rather than repeatedly reinstalling Discord.
Fix 7: Correct Bluetooth, iPhone, and Android audio routing
Windows Bluetooth headsets
- Select the sound icon on the taskbar.
- Choose the connected Bluetooth headset as the output.
- Confirm it under Settings → System → Sound → Output.
- If the headset is connected but silent, disconnect and reconnect it or remove and re-pair it.
- Restart Bluetooth or the computer, and update the Bluetooth or audio driver if Windows continues to lose the device.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance recommends checking the selected output, re-pairing the device, updating relevant drivers, and restarting the PC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bluetooth headsets can also change profiles when a call uses the microphone. Discord documents that many headsets switch from a higher-quality listening profile to a lower-quality headset or call profile, reducing sound quality. That explains muffled audio in some cases, but it does not automatically explain total silence. First verify that the correct Bluetooth route is selected.
iPhone and iPad
- Raise the volume while the Discord call is active; the active call can use a different volume context from ordinary media.
- Open the in-call audio or Bluetooth control and select the intended device through AirPlay.
- If Discord is playing through the phone speaker, open Control Center or the Lock Screen playback destination and choose the Bluetooth device.
- Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and allow Discord Bluetooth access if iOS requested it.
- Check microphone permission if the call will not establish, even though microphone permission is not normally the cause of an already-connected call with no incoming sound.
- Update Discord and iOS. If the current Discord app exposes it, try Voice → Developer Settings → Cache Actions → Clear Caches; labels can change between releases.
Discord documents selecting an external output through AirPlay during an iOS call. Apple also explains how to change playback destinations and manage app Bluetooth access.
Android
- Raise the media or call volume while Discord is actively connected.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth or audio output selector and choose the headset or speaker you intend to use.
- Check Discord’s microphone permission if voice cannot initialize or the call repeatedly fails.
- Temporarily disable battery saver or battery optimization for Discord.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to test the connection.
- Update Discord and Android.
- Clear Discord’s app cache through Android settings, or reinstall the app only after the earlier checks fail.
Discord lists Android 7 as its minimum supported Android version and recommends Android 10 or newer. Devices without Google Play Services, including some Amazon Kindle devices, are unsupported according to Discord’s current system-requirements page.

Fix 8: Repair browser permissions or test another supported client
If you are using Discord in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or Opera, the browser adds another layer of permissions and audio routing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reload the Discord tab.
- Check that the tab and browser are not muted.
- In Chrome, open the site-information menu beside the address bar, select Site settings, and review Discord’s permissions. You can also reach them through Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Allow the permissions Discord needs to initialize voice, particularly microphone access if the call will not establish.
- Check the operating system’s per-browser volume and output assignment.
- In Firefox, review site-specific media or autoplay controls if browser audio is blocked.
- Try another updated supported browser or compare with the desktop Discord app.
Chrome documents site-specific permission controls in its site settings help, while Firefox documents site-specific media autoplay controls in its autoplay guidance.
Microphone permission primarily affects transmitting audio or establishing voice functionality. It is not normally the explanation when you can join a call but cannot hear incoming audio. Still, a blocked browser permission can prevent the voice session from initializing correctly, so it is worth checking when the browser displays a connection error.
A useful comparison is browser works, desktop does not. If the same account and headset work in the browser, prioritize desktop-client state, Discord’s desktop output selection, the audio subsystem, and installation repair rather than replacing the headset or changing the account.
Fix 9: Update or repair Discord, the operating system, and audio drivers
Update software after checking routing and connection basics. Drivers are most relevant when the headset is missing from the operating system, all applications have audio problems, sound became distorted after an update, or the device fails outside Discord too.

- Update Discord through its official desktop download source or the relevant mobile app store.
- Install operating-system updates and restart the device.
- On Windows, update the audio driver through Device Manager or, preferably, the computer, motherboard, headset, or sound-card manufacturer.
- If Windows audio is generally low, distorted, or missing, turn off audio enhancements for the output device and test a different available audio format.
- Test Discord again in the desktop app and a supported browser.
- Reinstall Discord only if the desktop client remains broken after routing, reset, subsystem, and update checks.
Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible drivers, audio enhancements, and unsupported formats as possible causes of missing or quiet sound. Its guidance recommends updating or reinstalling drivers and testing a different format. A format change is an advanced Windows compatibility test, not a universal Discord requirement.
Do not force 48 kHz simply because a guide says Discord requires it. There is no basis here to present 48,000 Hz as a universal playback requirement. If you test another Windows format, keep the change only if it improves Discord without harming other audio, and revert it if sound becomes worse.
Reinstallation cannot correct a server deafen, a muted Discord entry in Windows Volume mixer, a wrong Bluetooth destination, a disconnected headset, or a Discord outage. That is why it belongs at the end of the sequence rather than at the beginning.

Check compatibility before assuming the audio is broken
Discord’s requirements change, and a client can become too old to join voice at all. The following figures are a dated compatibility note, not permanent requirements. As of August 9, 2026, Discord lists these minimum client versions for voice chat: Windows 1.0.9164, macOS 0.0.320, Linux 0.0.69, Android and iOS 247.0, Chrome 86, Firefox 142, Edge 86, Safari 15.4, and Opera 72. Discord says clients below the required version cannot join audio or video conversations after the March 2, 2026 encryption-support deadline. Check the current minimum voice-chat client requirements before relying on these numbers.
Discord’s general system-requirements information is a separate compatibility list: as of the same research date it lists Windows 10, macOS 12 Monterey, Android 7, iOS 16, and supported Linux distributions. Its general browser guidance may list a newer browser baseline than the minimum needed specifically for voice—for example, Chrome 108+ for general system support versus Chrome 86 in the voice-client table. Use the newest supported version rather than deliberately installing an old minimum version.

Windows 10 remains listed by Discord as a minimum desktop operating system in that dated information, but Microsoft ended free Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Discord compatibility and Microsoft’s operating-system support lifecycle are separate issues.
Use these tests if the nine fixes did not solve it
A small comparison test can identify the failing layer:
- Same headset, Discord browser: if browser works, suspect the desktop app.
- Different headset, same computer: if the second headset works, suspect the original device, profile, cable, or driver.
- Same account on another computer or phone: if Discord works there, suspect local routing or software.
- Another person in the same channel: if they hear the supposedly silent speaker, check your individual volume or output. If nobody hears that speaker, check the speaker’s microphone.
- Another network: if a hotspot fixes RTC Connecting or choppy audio, investigate the original router, VPN, firewall, ISP, or managed network.
Virtual audio devices deserve special attention. Voicemeeter, capture cards, streaming software, voice changers, and virtual cables can be selected as Discord’s output even when they are not actively forwarding audio. Temporarily selecting the physical headset or disabling the virtual route is a useful diagnostic test.
When contacting Discord Support, collect your operating system and version, Discord version, client type, headset or speaker model and connection type, a screenshot of Voice & Video, a Windows Volume mixer screenshot if applicable, the exact connection message, and the debug information available under Voice & Video → Debugging. Discord’s troubleshooting guide specifically asks users to provide details such as the OS, affected clients, input/output devices, screenshots, and debug logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does muting myself on Discord stop me from hearing other people?
Normally, no. Mute controls your microphone and outgoing audio. Deafen controls incoming voice audio. A server administrator can also server-deafen you, in which case an administrator or owner must remove the restriction.
Why can I hear one person on Discord but not another?
Right-click the silent person on desktop or browser, or long-press them on mobile, and raise their individual volume. If their volume is normal, ask whether other people can hear them; if nobody can, their microphone or input path is more likely to be the problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does Discord work in my browser but not the desktop app?
That comparison usually points to the desktop client’s output selection, Windows per-app routing, cached voice settings, audio-subsystem compatibility, or a damaged installation. Check those before replacing the headset or changing your account.
Should I reinstall Discord first?
No. Reinstalling will not fix a slashed deafen icon, an individual volume set to zero, Windows Volume mixer routing, a wrong Bluetooth output, server deafen, or a Discord outage. Reinstall after checking those causes, resetting Voice & Video, updating software, and comparing with the browser client.
The Bottom Line
Start with the symptom, not the most drastic repair: remove deafen, check the silent person’s individual volume, choose the exact Discord output device, and inspect Windows’ per-app Volume mixer. If every app is silent, repair the system audio route; if Discord shows RTC Connecting or No Route, investigate the network and Discord Status; if only the desktop app fails, reset Voice & Video and compare it with the browser. Reinstalling Discord is a last resort, not the first fix.
