Plugin installation and update failures usually come from one of seven layers: your account or plan, the plugin package, file ownership and permissions, network access, resource limits or conflicts, cron and host policy, or a failed maintenance-mode cleanup. The fastest safe fix is to read the exact error, make a current backup, check Tools > Site Health, and verify that WordPress can write to its plugin and upgrade directories before changing anything.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
A request for FTP credentials is a symptom of a file-write problem, not a cure by itself. Likewise, deleting a .maintenance file can clear a stuck notice but will not repair the download, ownership, or compatibility problem that caused the update to fail.

Start with the error and a backup
Do not repeatedly click Install or Update until you know which layer is failing. Copy the complete message, including whether it says Download failed, Could not create directory, files could not be copied, a timeout, an FTP-credential request, or a compatibility warning. Different messages require different fixes.
- Back up the site. Make sure the backup includes both the database and the
wp-contentfiles. WordPress documentation specifically advises having a current backup before updating plugins. - Check the account. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended site and that the user has administrator capability where the installation is being attempted.
- Open Tools > Site Health. Review critical issues, loopback requests, scheduled events, REST API errors, and any filesystem or cron warnings.
- Record the plugin version, WordPress version, PHP version, and the time of failure. These details help a host or plugin developer reproduce the problem.
Do not make the entire site world-writable as a quick fix. Broad permissions can create a security problem while leaving ownership and deployment-user conflicts unresolved.

1. Check account, role, and plan access
On WordPress.com, the ability to install plugins depends on the site plan and the permissions attached to the signed-in account. A site can appear to have a plugin problem when the real issue is that its plan does not include plugin installation, the account is not the administrator, or the account is viewing a different site than expected. WordPress.com lists permissions, incompatible plugins, incorrect plan information, and other site errors among reasons installation may be unavailable.
WordPress.com checklist
- Verify the site address in the account switcher.
- Confirm that the current plan is plugin-enabled.
- Ask the site owner to check your role if the install controls are missing.
- Sign out and back in if the dashboard shows stale plan or permission information.
Self-hosted checklist
On a self-hosted installation, the account must have the administrator capability required to manage plugins. A role-management plugin or a custom membership configuration can remove that capability even when the user appears to be an administrator. Check the role settings and test with the site owner’s account before changing code or file permissions.
2. Fix an invalid ZIP or compatibility problem
Manual uploads fail when the archive is not the plugin package WordPress expects. The upload should be one ZIP file containing the plugin’s files in the expected directory structure. A common mistake is uploading a ZIP that contains another ZIP, or uploading a vendor bundle that includes documentation and several unrelated packages.
Prepare the package
- Download the plugin from the official WordPress directory or a vendor you trust.
- Keep the original ZIP intact; do not upload a folder compressed inside a second archive unless the vendor explicitly instructs you to do so.
- In the dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin, select the single ZIP, and start the installation.
- If WordPress reports that the plugin already exists, do not overwrite a possibly damaged copy until you have a backup and a rollback plan.
Check compatibility before replacing files
Read the plugin’s stated WordPress and PHP compatibility. An update can fail because the package requires a newer PHP release, because your WordPress version is too old, or because the plugin does not support the current environment. Compatibility warnings should be resolved at the version or hosting level rather than by forcing an upload.
Repair a damaged existing directory
If the plugin directory is incomplete or corrupted, back up first. Then deactivate the plugin if the dashboard is available, remove or rename the old directory through the host file manager or FTP/SFTP, and reinstall a clean package. Renaming preserves the old files for inspection and is safer than deleting them immediately. Do not remove a plugin’s database data unless its documentation explicitly explains the consequences.

3. Resolve “could not create directory” and FTP-credential prompts
WordPress must write to the plugin directory and temporary upgrade directories during an install or update. The official hardening guidance explains that automatic update file operations run as the user who owns the files. If the web server user does not own, or cannot write to, the required directories, WordPress may ask for FTP credentials or report that it cannot create a directory or copy files.
Recommended Free Tools
What the FTP prompt means
The prompt generally means WordPress cannot write directly with its current web-server identity. Entering credentials may work temporarily when the server permits that transfer, but credentials do not correct a wrong owner, a non-writable directory, a read-only filesystem, or a host policy that blocks dashboard updates. Repeated prompts indicate that the underlying file-access model still needs attention.
Inspect before changing permissions
- Use Tools > Site Health and note any filesystem warnings.
- In the hosting control panel or file manager, inspect ownership and write permissions for
wp-content,wp-content/plugins, and the temporary upgrade location. - Check whether files were uploaded by a different deployment user, restored from a backup, or created by a command-line account. Mixed owners commonly cause only some plugins or updates to fail.
- Ask the host or server administrator to align ownership with the web process and apply the least-permissive write access that still allows updates.
Do not recursively make every file writable by every user. Preserve normal least-privilege settings and ask the host for the correct ownership and permission model for that server.
4. Diagnose download, DNS, and firewall failures
Messages such as Download failed, name-lookup timeouts, or incomplete package downloads point to connectivity rather than local plugin code. The dashboard must reach WordPress.org or the plugin vendor, resolve DNS, download the archive, and write it to disk.
Network checks
- Confirm that the server has outbound HTTPS access.
- Check DNS resolution from the hosting environment, not only from your laptop.
- Review firewall, Web Application Firewall, proxy, and egress rules for blocked requests.
- Check whether the host has temporary connectivity incidents or rate limits.
- Verify that the plugin vendor’s download endpoint is available and that the package URL has not expired.
Retry only after the network condition is corrected. Repeated retries can leave partial temporary files and make a permissions problem look like a download problem.

5. Isolate plugin conflicts and resource limits
A plugin update can expose a conflict with another plugin, the active theme, or a server resource limit. Timeouts are especially likely when the server cannot complete the work within its available memory or execution limits. A conflict may show as a blank page, a fatal error, a stalled update, or a timeout that disappears when plugins are disabled.
Safe conflict test
- Schedule a maintenance window and confirm that your backup is current.
- Deactivate all nonessential plugins. If the dashboard is unavailable, rename
wp-content/pluginstemporarily through the host file manager or FTP/SFTP; this disables standard plugins while preserving their files and data. - Retry the installation or update.
- If it succeeds, reactivate plugins one at a time.
- After each activation, check the front end, the dashboard, the error log, and Site Health.
- When the failure returns, leave the suspected plugin disabled and contact its author or your host with the recorded error and environment details.
Must-use plugins in wp-content/mu-plugins are loaded separately and are not disabled by the normal Plugins screen or by renaming the standard plugins directory. A host or administrator must inspect those files using the appropriate procedure.
When the server is running out of capacity
If disabling plugins changes a timeout but does not identify a single conflict, ask the host to review PHP memory, process limits, disk space, and web-server logs. Do not assume that increasing a limit is safe or sufficient; the host must confirm which resource is exhausted and whether the plugin is compatible with the available environment.
6. Restore missing automatic-update controls
Plugin and theme automatic updates were introduced in WordPress 5.5. When enabled, WordPress runs them twice per day by default. The controls may be absent because the installation is on an unsupported version, the host has disabled them, a plugin has removed the controls, or a configuration constant blocks updater functionality.
Check cron first
Automatic updates rely on WordPress Cron. In Tools > Site Health, inspect scheduled-event and cron errors. A disabled loopback request, a broken site URL, blocked requests, or a host that disables scheduled tasks can prevent updates even when the dashboard appears normal.

Check configuration and host policy
Inspect wp-config.php and deployment documentation for:
define( 'AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED', true );
That constant blocks plugin and theme installation and update functionality in the administration area. Remove or change it only when your site owner and deployment policy permit automatic updates. Some hosts intentionally disable dashboard updates so that releases are tested and deployed through a controlled process; in that case, use the host’s documented workflow instead of fighting the policy.
7. Clear a stale maintenance-mode screen
During an update, WordPress creates a .maintenance file in the WordPress root. If the process crashes or times out, the file can remain and every visitor may see a maintenance notice.

Do not delete unrelated hidden files. If you cannot identify the WordPress root or the host blocks file access, ask the host to remove the stale file safely.

The dashboard is convenient, but it is not always the correct tool. Compare the available methods against ownership, rollback, access, compatibility, auditability, and downtime before proceeding.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
| Method | File-write fit | Backup and rollback | Access required | Compatibility and dependencies | Auditability and downtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dashboard install or update | Works when the web process owns or can write to the required directories. | Use a current backup; rollback depends on your backup process. | Administrator capability and a working dashboard. | WordPress checks the package and reports compatibility or download errors, but server policy can still block the operation. | Easy to track in the admin area; usually the least disruptive when it succeeds. |
| Manual ZIP upload | Still requires the dashboard or an alternate file path to write the package. | Back up first; keep the previous directory or package for rollback. | Administrator capability for the upload, or file access for a host-assisted replacement. | You must verify the ZIP structure, plugin version, WordPress version, and PHP compatibility. | Useful when the normal update package is damaged; schedule a maintenance window if files must be replaced manually. |
| WP-CLI | Uses the command-line user, so it can succeed where the web process cannot, or create a new ownership mismatch if users are mixed. | Backups and a tested rollback remain your responsibility. | Shell access and permission to run commands in the site directory. | Check plugin requirements and dependencies before changing production files. | Commands can be logged and repeated; downtime depends on the operation and deployment process. |
| Host-assisted repair | The host can correct ownership, permissions, DNS, firewall, cron, and policy issues at the server layer. | Confirm the host’s backup and restore procedure before changes. | Support access or an administrator with control-panel access. | The host can verify PHP, web-server, and platform compatibility. | Best for policy or infrastructure failures; timing and maintenance windows depend on the host. |
9. Manual fallback when the dashboard cannot work
Use manual recovery only after backing up and verifying the source. Download the plugin from the official directory or a trusted vendor, then use the host file manager or FTP/SFTP to replace or restore the plugin directory. Keep the old directory renamed until the new copy has been tested, so you have a rollback path.
If the administrator area is inaccessible
Rename wp-content/plugins temporarily. WordPress will deactivate standard plugins while their files and database data remain available for investigation. Restore the directory name after you regain access, then reactivate plugins individually to find the failure. This method does not disable must-use plugins, which reside in wp-content/mu-plugins.
After a manual replacement
- Check the plugin’s status and version in the Plugins screen.
- Open Site Health and confirm that scheduled events and loopback requests are normal.
- Test the front end, login, forms, checkout, and any feature the plugin controls.
- Review PHP and web-server logs for new errors.
- Document who changed the files, when, which package was used, and how to roll back.
10. Match common messages to the likely fix
| Message or symptom | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| FTP credentials requested | Ownership or write permissions | Inspect the web-process owner and plugin/upgrade directory permissions; do not rely on credentials alone. |
| Could not create directory | Non-writable path, wrong owner, disk or host policy | Check the target directory, available storage, ownership, and host restrictions. |
| Files could not be copied | Ownership, permissions, incomplete package, or filesystem issue | Check the package and destination, then ask the host to verify file access. |
| Download failed or name-lookup timeout | DNS, outbound network, firewall, WAF, or vendor endpoint | Test connectivity from the server and review egress and DNS logs. |
| Update times out | Resource limit or plugin conflict | Deactivate nonessential plugins, retry in a maintenance window, and reactivate one at a time. |
| Maintenance notice remains | Stale .maintenance file after an interrupted update |
Confirm no process is running, fix the original cause, then remove the file from the WordPress root. |
| Automatic-update controls are missing | WordPress version, cron, host policy, plugin settings, or wp-config.php |
Check Site Health cron events and inspect the updater-disabled constant and deployment policy. |
When to involve the host or plugin author
Contact the host when the failure involves file ownership, server permissions, DNS, outbound connectivity, firewall rules, cron, PHP limits, disk space, or a host-enforced deployment policy. Include the exact error, timestamp, site URL, WordPress and PHP versions, plugin version, and the steps already attempted.
Contact the plugin author when the failure follows a specific plugin release, appears only with one other plugin or theme, or returns after a clean reinstall with correct file access and a healthy network. Provide logs and a reproducible sequence without sharing passwords or private keys.
Quick Recap
A safe order of operations
- Back up the database and files.
- Capture the exact error and environment versions.
- Confirm the account, administrator capability, and plugin-enabled plan where applicable.
- Check Tools > Site Health, especially filesystem, loopback, REST, and cron issues.
- Verify the ZIP structure and plugin compatibility.
- Check ownership and write access without broadening permissions unnecessarily.
- Test DNS, outbound connectivity, firewall, and vendor availability.
- Isolate conflicts by deactivating nonessential plugins and reactivating them one at a time.
- Check updater constants and host deployment policy.
- Use manual ZIP, WP-CLI, or host-assisted repair only with a rollback plan.
- Remove a stale
.maintenancefile only after the original failure is understood.
