If WordPress asks for FTP credentials or reports “Installation failed: Could not create directory” while you install a theme, the theme is usually not the problem. WordPress cannot write to its files directly, or the installer is aimed at the wrong WordPress directory. Check the active installation path, the ownership and write access of wp-content, and the credentials supplied by your host. If the dashboard still cannot write, upload the extracted theme folder manually to /wp-content/themes/ and activate it from the dashboard.

This guide follows a safe order: verify the package and destination first, correct the server access model with your host, then use FTP or SFTP only when necessary. It also explains what the FTP prompt means, how to avoid uploading to the wrong site, and when a configuration change is appropriate.

What the WordPress FTP error actually means
WordPress uses its Filesystem API whenever it needs to create, replace, or remove files. The API first tries to write directly through the web server. When WordPress detects that the user running PHP will not match the owner of the files it needs to change, it can switch to FTP or a similar transport and ask you for connection details. An FTP prompt is therefore normally a filesystem-access signal, not an indication that a theme has a design defect.
The same underlying problem can produce several messages, including a request for FTP credentials, “Installation failed,” or “Could not create directory.” A valid FTP login does not by itself prove that the installer is using the correct site: a host may have several web roots, staging installations, or account-level directories. The destination and the server’s ownership model have to be correct together.

Use this order to fix the installation
- Verify the theme ZIP. Obtain the package from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme’s vendor. In the WordPress dashboard, open Appearance > Themes > Add New, choose the ZIP, and select Install. A package that contains documentation, a license file, or several nested ZIP files may not be the installable theme archive; use the archive that contains the actual theme folder.
- Identify the WordPress installation that serves the site. Do not assume that the account’s first web directory is the live site. Confirm the domain or subdirectory that is currently serving WordPress, then locate that installation’s
wp-content/themes/directory. If your host has a staging copy, make sure you are not changing staging while troubleshooting production, or the reverse. - Check ownership and write access. WordPress needs to create files beneath
wp-content. The correct owner and group depend on how the host runs PHP and how files were uploaded. A mismatch between the FTP account and the web-server process commonly prevents a direct dashboard install. Ask the host which user should own the WordPress files and which directories the PHP process may write to. Do not make every file world-writable as a shortcut. - Use the host’s exact connection details. Enter the FTP or SSH/SFTP username, password, host, port, and path supplied by your hosting provider. A login can be accepted while still opening the wrong directory, so compare the client’s starting path with the WordPress root you identified in the previous step.
- Prefer SFTP when available. SFTP uses an SSH connection and encrypts the credentials and data in transit. It is not simply a different spelling of FTP: your host must provide SFTP access, an SSH-capable username, and the applicable port or connection details.
- Use a manual upload when the dashboard cannot write. Extract the theme ZIP on your computer, upload the resulting theme folder into the active site’s
/wp-content/themes/directory with an FTP client or the hosting file manager, and then open Appearance > Themes. The uploaded theme should appear there for activation. - Change filesystem configuration only after the path and ownership are known. WordPress documents settings such as
FS_METHOD,FTP_BASE, andFTP_CONTENT_DIR. These values are host-specific. A guessed value can direct WordPress to another installation or make a working setup fail, so ask the host to confirm the real filesystem path and server arrangement before editing configuration.
Confirm that the package is a theme WordPress can install
Use the dashboard installer first
For a standard theme ZIP, the supported dashboard route is Appearance > Themes > Add New, followed by the upload control and Install. If that route fails before the theme is extracted, the error is usually about filesystem access rather than the theme’s visual code.
Recognize an incorrectly nested archive
After extracting a download locally, you should be able to identify one folder that represents the theme. Upload that folder, not a parent folder that contains several unrelated files and another ZIP. If the vendor supplied a bundle containing a child theme, parent theme, documentation, or plugins, determine which ZIP is the actual theme before uploading. This prevents a successful transfer that leaves WordPress unable to recognize the package.

Find the correct WordPress root and destination
The destination for a manually installed theme is the themes directory inside the active installation’s wp-content directory. The complete path commonly appears as /wp-content/themes/ relative to the WordPress root, but the account-level path before that segment differs by host. A web root may be a home-directory subfolder, a domain-specific folder, or a directory for a site installed in a subdirectory.

How to verify the active installation
- Start from the domain or subdirectory that displays the site you intend to change.
- In the hosting panel or file manager, identify the document root assigned to that domain.
- Confirm that the directory contains the WordPress installation files and the matching
wp-contentdirectory. - Open
wp-content/themes/and inspect the existing theme folders. Their presence is a useful check that you are in the site’s real installation rather than an empty account directory.
If your FTP client opens at a home directory, the WordPress root may be several levels below it. If it opens inside another domain’s document root, move to the path assigned to the site you are troubleshooting. A correct username and password cannot compensate for a wrong starting directory.
Fix ownership and write access safely
WordPress must be able to create a theme directory and write the files inside it. Whether that happens directly from the dashboard depends on the relationship between the web-server process, the PHP process, and the account that uploaded the files. Uploading files as one user and running PHP as another can leave a directory owned by the wrong user or group. The result is often a permission failure even though the files look present in a file manager.
What to ask your hosting provider
- Which account user and group should own the WordPress files?
- Which user runs PHP for this site?
- Should
wp-contentand its theme subdirectory be writable by that PHP process? - Is the site using a control-panel permission model, a container, or another isolation system that changes the normal path?
- Can the host repair ownership and confirm the document root without making the whole site broadly writable?
Give the host the exact error text and the site path you verified. Hosting support can inspect server ownership and correct it in a way that matches the provider’s execution model. Avoid applying a blanket “write for everyone” setting: it may hide the immediate symptom while weakening the site’s file protections.

Distinguish ownership from a bad login
A dashboard prompt can occur because direct writes are unavailable even when your FTP credentials are valid. Conversely, an FTP client can connect successfully while WordPress still cannot write because the destination directory belongs to a different user or because the account has no write permission there. Test both parts separately: confirm that the client can list and create files in the intended theme directory, and have the host verify the web-server ownership model.
Enter FTP or SFTP credentials correctly
Use the values supplied for this hosting account rather than credentials from another site on the same account. The WordPress filesystem form may ask for a host, port, username, password, and a path. Some hosts provide an FTP account that starts in a restricted directory; others provide an account that starts at the home directory. The path must lead to the WordPress installation that serves the site.
Why SFTP is the safer transport
WordPress describes SFTP as FTP with encrypted credentials and data in transit. Choose it when the host supports it and provides the necessary SSH/SFTP details. Encryption protects the login and transferred files while they travel between your computer and the website; it does not fix a wrong path or incorrect ownership. You still need the correct account and destination.

When a credential prompt keeps returning
- Re-enter the host name, port, username, and password exactly as supplied by the host.
- Confirm that the selected method matches the account: an SFTP account cannot be used as ordinary FTP, and an FTP-only account cannot be upgraded by changing a dropdown.
- Check the starting directory and browse to the WordPress root before retrying.
- Ask the host whether the account is locked, restricted to another directory, or missing write access.
Manual theme installation through FTP or a file manager
Manual installation is the documented fallback when the dashboard cannot write the package. It separates the transfer from WordPress’s extraction step, which is useful when the Filesystem API cannot create directories.
- Download the theme ZIP from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor.
- Extract the ZIP on your computer. Identify the single folder that contains the theme files.
- Connect with an FTP client, SFTP client, or the host’s file manager.
- Browse to the active site’s
/wp-content/themes/directory. - Upload the extracted theme folder itself. Do not upload only the files inside it if that would remove the theme’s folder structure.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and check that the folder and its files are present in the destination.
- In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes. Locate the uploaded theme and select Activate.
If the theme does not appear, inspect the directory level first. A common transfer mistake is an extra nesting level such as themes/theme-package/theme-name/ when WordPress expects the theme folder directly beneath themes. Another is uploading the vendor’s outer bundle instead of the installable theme folder.
When to consider filesystem constants
WordPress documents FS_METHOD, FTP_BASE, and FTP_CONTENT_DIR for environments where the normal filesystem detection needs guidance. These settings describe how WordPress should access files and where the installation’s directories are located. They are not universal values: the correct strings depend on the host’s document root, PHP execution method, and account layout.

Use configuration only with verified values
- First confirm the physical WordPress root and the exact
wp-contentlocation with the host. - Confirm which filesystem method the host supports and expects.
- Back up the relevant configuration before changing it.
- Make one deliberate change, then test theme installation and normal dashboard updates.
- Remove or correct the change if it causes WordPress to point at the wrong directory or repeatedly request credentials.
Editing these constants cannot repair a missing account permission or an incorrect hosting path. If you do not know the real filesystem layout, leave the values alone and have the host configure them.
Choose the installation method that fits the problem
| Method | Best use | Security characteristic | Path and ownership control | Support needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dashboard upload | Normal theme ZIP installation when WordPress can write directly | Uses the site’s existing WordPress connection; no separate file-transfer client is required | Least direct control over the server path and ownership | Host help is needed when direct writes fail |
| Hosting file manager | Manual extraction and upload when the host provides a browser-based file tool | Protected by the hosting account’s login; transport details depend on the host’s panel | Shows the account’s directories and lets you place the folder in wp-content/themes |
Host can clarify the document root and repair ownership |
| FTP | Manual upload or credential-based filesystem access when the host supplies FTP | Does not provide the in-transit encryption described for SFTP | Lets you browse to the installation and transfer the extracted folder; it does not automatically correct ownership | Host supplies the account, path, port, and permission model |
| SFTP | Manual upload or filesystem access when SSH/SFTP is available | Encrypts the password and other transferred data in transit | Provides the same practical folder and path control as a file-transfer client, subject to account permissions | Host must provide SFTP/SSH access and the correct connection details |
Troubleshoot the exact symptom
“Could not create directory”
Check that you are in the active installation and that wp-content is writable under the host’s ownership model. If the path is correct but the web-server process cannot create a directory, ask the host to repair ownership or write access. Manual upload can install the theme while that server-side issue is being corrected, but it does not remove the underlying permission problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe FTP form rejects the credentials
Verify the method, host, port, username, password, and starting path with the provider. An FTP account may be restricted to a directory that does not contain the WordPress installation. If the provider supports SFTP, request the SFTP details rather than assuming ordinary FTP credentials will work with it.
The transfer finishes but the theme is missing from Appearance > Themes
Check that you uploaded the extracted theme folder directly beneath wp-content/themes. Remove an unnecessary outer folder level and confirm that the upload was complete. Also verify that you uploaded a theme package rather than a bundle containing documentation, plugins, or another ZIP.
The wrong site changes after activation
Stop and verify the domain’s document root. Multiple installations can share one hosting account, and an apparently successful upload may have gone to a staging or secondary site. Match the directory containing the site’s existing WordPress files and themes to the domain you intend to change before trying again.
The dashboard still asks for FTP after a successful manual upload
Manual placement makes the theme available but does not change WordPress’s filesystem detection. The continuing prompt indicates that direct writes are still unavailable or that the configured filesystem path is wrong. Have the host confirm ownership, PHP’s execution user, and any filesystem constants rather than repeatedly entering credentials.

Security checks after the theme is installed
- Prefer SFTP for transfers when the host supports it because it encrypts credentials and data in transit.
- Use the host-issued account for the intended site and avoid sharing credentials in tickets or chat beyond the provider’s secure process.
- Keep the theme folder under the active site’s
wp-content/themesdirectory; an upload outside that directory will not make it available to WordPress. - Do not solve an ownership mismatch by making all site files world-writable. Ask the host to apply the permissions that match its PHP and account model.
- After activation, check the dashboard for the active theme and test the site before deleting the original ZIP or changing additional configuration.
A final diagnostic checklist
- The ZIP came from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor.
- The domain’s actual WordPress root has been identified.
- The destination is that installation’s
wp-content/themesdirectory. - The host has confirmed the expected file owner, group, and PHP execution user.
- The FTP or SFTP method, host, port, username, password, and path match the provider’s instructions.
- SFTP is selected when the host offers it.
- If the dashboard cannot write, the extracted theme folder has been uploaded manually and appears under Appearance > Themes.
FS_METHOD,FTP_BASE, orFTP_CONTENT_DIRhave been changed only with verified host-specific values.
