But the documented incidents do not establish that every update was intended to stop mods—or that Enigma caused every reported technical problem. The clearest picture comes from separating Capcom’s stated position from what players reported and what the company confirmed.
What Capcom has said about mods
In an October 2023 presentation, Capcom described mods as “another problem” inherent to PC gaming. As reported by PC Gamer, the presentation said: “all mods are defined as cheats, except when they are officially supported.”
Capcom also acknowledged that many mods can have a positive effect, while warning about potential downsides. PC Gamer reproduced the company’s explanation: “The majority of mods can have a positive impact on the game. Some mods, however, can be detrimental to the company both in terms of reputational damage and in terms of workload.” Capcom’s stated concerns included mods that could offend public order and morals, be mistaken for official features, or harm the company’s image.
That is a broad position on unsupported modifications, not proof that every technical update involving a protection system has the same purpose. Enigma’s presence in an update can be reported as a fact; the developer’s motive or a particular technical effect needs separate evidence.

Did Enigma break Monster Hunter Rise on Steam Deck?
The available reporting establishes that players encountered a Steam Deck launch failure after an update and that the compatibility problem was fixed by January 23, 2024. It does not establish that Enigma caused the failure: Capcom did not confirm that connection. The timing may explain why players suspected the update, but timing and player reports alone do not prove causation.

Enigma Protector is a software protection system, and reports documented its appearance in updates to some Capcom games. Separately, Capcom’s October 2023 presentation clearly treated unsupported mods as cheats and outlined reputational and workload concerns. Those facts help explain why players connect the two issues, but they do not prove that stopping mods was the reason for every Enigma update.
The outcomes were not uniform. Resident Evil Revelations’ update was rolled back after reported problems, Monster Hunter Rise’s Steam Deck compatibility issue was fixed, and Resident Evil 4’s Enigma replacement was later removed following performance complaints. The reports do not establish a comprehensive current list of Capcom games using Enigma, and the Resident Evil 4 change shows that a title’s protection status can change over time.
