Capcom is exploring AI as part of the development pipeline—not announcing that AI will make the art, stories, or other creative content in its games. At an October 2, 2026 conference, the company presented REX, a staged expansion of its existing RE Engine that aims to improve development tools, efficiency, performance, and quality assurance. Event coverage describes AI understanding or generating code and playtesting builds as longer-term possibilities, not capabilities confirmed as broadly deployed today.
What Capcom announced about REX
At CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026, programmer Satoshi Ishida discussed REX as a project to extend RE Engine incrementally. It is not described as a replacement engine built from scratch. Gamebiz’s event report says RE Engine development began in 2014 and that Resident Evil 7 was its first practical use in 2017. The same report attributes to Capcom more than 2,000 engine users and more than 27 supported titles; those figures are event-report claims, not independently confirmed here by Capcom documentation. Gamebiz’s October 2, 2026 report provides the account of the presentation.
The REX name covers systems aimed at different parts of development:
- RE:Dox: a common layer for handling data.
- RE:UI: a developer-interface system intended to be faster and easier to test.
- RE:Log: a logging system that uses IDs and central collection.
- RE:Flows: a visual way to build game mechanics and convert them into a standard programming language.
- RE:Runtime: work focused on runtime performance when games have large numbers of objects.
Gamebiz reports that RE:Dox and RE:Log have been released as open source. That fact alone does not establish which uses their licenses permit, or whether Capcom intends the projects for AI training.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where AI fits—and what remains a possibility
The reported direction is to make development systems easier for people and AI to understand. A common programming-language foundation could, over time, help AI interpret or generate code and play test builds to find bugs. These are future possibilities described in event coverage, not proof that code generation or automated playtesting is already in routine use across Capcom’s game production. The report gives no rollout timetable.
The distinction matters: assistance with internal tools, code, or testing is not the same as using generative AI to create finished game assets or writing. The REX account supports the former as a development ambition; it does not establish a Capcom policy of putting AI-generated creative content into released games.

How this fits Capcom’s stated position on generative AI
Capcom’s FY2025 results Q&A said the creative work at the heart of experiences that exceed players’ expectations should be handled by people. The company described its policy at that time as using generative AI to improve routine operations, giving developers more time for work that creates value. Its official FY2025 results Q&A also said the company was seeing some operational-efficiency benefits at multiple development stages, but that game development’s complexity meant it would take time to demonstrate results quantitatively.
Capcom’s FY2025 results presentation listed research, draft generation, user analysis, interactive manuals, error checks, and meeting notes as examples of routine-task applications. It said the goal was to reduce time spent on such tasks so creators could focus more on creative work. The presentation also stated, “Improving efficiency and productivity in development is also essential.” Separately, Capcom’s management strategy identifies investment in its proprietary engine and development environment, alongside generative AI for development efficiency and productivity, as part of its business strategy.

REX suggests a broader interest in AI-aware development systems than the routine-task examples Capcom previously listed. But the available announcements do not demonstrate that the company has reversed its stated position on human-led creative work.

- Established by the event report: REX is intended to extend RE Engine in stages, with work spanning tools, data handling, performance, efficiency, and QA.
- Described as a longer-term possibility: AI-assisted code understanding or generation and automated playtesting.
- Not established: when the possible AI capabilities will arrive, how widely they will be used in production, or what measurable productivity gains they will deliver.
- Not announced: a policy to use AI-generated art, writing, or other finished creative content in Capcom games.
For now, the news is about how Capcom may build and test games, rather than a confirmed change in what players will see in them.
