The battle is built around two resources: Rose’s normal health and an eight-hit blood-curse counter. Break Carmilla’s rotating skull shields, avoid blood waves and pillars, and attack only while she surfaces. When the curse counter reaches zero, Carmilla can kill Rose with a grab, even if the boss’s health bar is almost empty.

Where to find Carmilla
Carmilla is in the Observatory above the Library Planetarium. In the game’s boss-order reference, she is encounter seven and appears after the Planetarium and Observation Tower sequence. Rose Belmont’s route through this area follows the game’s Paris setting and its emphasis on opening new traversal paths rather than reaching every room in a straight line.

- Go to the Lecture Room and inspect the Star Chart.
- Use the constellation pattern shown on the chart to align the giant astrolabe in the Planetarium.
- Take the grapple route that opens after the alignment.
- Follow that route to the save room and then through the boss door in the Observatory.
The puzzle does not require a combat trick or a hidden item. The Star Chart provides the pattern; the astrolabe must be positioned to reproduce it. If the route remains closed, return to the Lecture Room and inspect the chart again before trying to adjust the mechanism.

Planetarium puzzle: how to solve the astrolabe
1. Read the Star Chart first
The relevant clue is in the Lecture Room. Interact with the Star Chart and study the constellation arrangement rather than attempting to move the astrolabe from memory. The chart is the reference for the large astronomical mechanism in the Planetarium.
2. Match the constellation pattern
At the giant astrolabe, align its rings and star positions until they reproduce the chart’s pattern. The important detail is the relationship between the stars, not a universal sequence of button presses. Camera angle and the state of the mechanism can make a correct alignment look different from a previous attempt, so compare the whole arrangement with the chart.
3. Use the newly opened grapple path
Once the pattern is accepted, a grapple route opens above the Planetarium. Follow it upward, make the save room your checkpoint, and continue to the Observatory. Saving before the boss matters because a failed attempt sends you back through the counterintuitive puzzle-and-climb route rather than directly to Carmilla.
What the blood-curse counter does
Carmilla begins the fight by placing an unavoidable blood curse on Rose. The counter starts at eight. Each connecting blood attack removes a point; ordinary healing restores health but does not restore the curse counter. Treat the counter as a second survival meter with its own failure condition.

At zero, Carmilla can perform a killing grab. This remains true when her health bar is nearly empty, so a player cannot safely trade damage at the end of the fight. A low counter should change your objective from dealing more damage to preserving a safe position until the next opening.
- Eight points: the fight has just started, but every blood hit still reduces your margin for error.
- Several points remaining: prioritize movement and shield damage over extra swings.
- One or two points: stop taking optional attacks and wait for a clean surfacing window.
- Zero: the curse can trigger the killing grab; a nearly defeated Carmilla is not exempt.
How Carmilla’s defenses and movement work
Carmilla alternates between surfacing from the blood pool and relocating beneath it. While she is visible, she throws skulls and raises blood columns. Two rotating skull shields protect her and should be broken before you commit to a damage-focused phase. The practical priority is therefore shield destruction, curse preservation and only then sustained attacks on Carmilla herself.
Do not chase her beneath the pool. When she disappears, use the time to read the next pattern, choose a landing area and prepare for the next surfacing. Trying to force damage while she is submerged usually turns a controlled attempt into unnecessary curse loss.

Attack-by-attack responses
Blood wave
Jump the crest of the wave and be ready for the return pattern. Clearing the first wave is not the entire response: the follow-up can arrive from the opposite direction while Rose is landing. Start the jump early enough to see where you will touch down, then avoid swinging until the return path is clear.

Marked blood pillars
When the floor marks the locations of the pillars, move to a gap before they rise. Do not stand on a marked space and try to react after the column appears; the warning is your safe-movement window. A short reposition is safer than a late attack that leaves Rose trapped between pillars.
Pillars combined with waves
This combination punishes automatic jumping. First identify a gap in the pillars, then secure a landing area that will not be covered by the incoming wave. Jumping without a destination can clear the wave and still leave Rose inside a rising column when she lands.
Skull throws during a surfacing
Use Carmilla’s visible phase to work on the rotating shields, but stop attacking if the next blood pattern will remove another curse point. The shields are the fight’s defensive gate; breaking both is more valuable than squeezing in one additional hit against the boss.
A reliable fight loop
- Enter with a checkpoint. Save in the room immediately before the Observatory so a failed attempt does not repeat the entire Library climb.
- Watch the opening curse placement. The initial curse cannot be prevented, so begin by learning the arena rather than trying to avoid a scripted hit.
- Break the two rotating skull shields. Attack during Carmilla’s surfacing windows and disengage before a wave or pillar pattern reaches Rose.
- Read the floor warnings. Marked spaces are future pillar locations. Move into a gap and plan where the jump will end.
- Clear waves with controlled jumps. Jump the crest, then account for the return pattern before committing to another attack.
- Use each surfacing for measured damage. Once the shields are gone, hit Carmilla while she is visible, but never spend a curse point for a marginal swing.
- Change priorities at a low counter. At one or two points, movement and survival take precedence over damage.
- Finish without relaxing. Continue respecting waves, pillars and the curse grab until the victory state appears.
Choosing an approach: safe attrition or aggressive trading
There is no confirmed single best loadout, elemental weakness or exact damage value for this encounter. The meaningful choice is how much risk you accept while the curse counter is available.

| Approach | How it works | Main advantage | Main danger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curse-preserving | Break shields first, take short attacks during surfacing windows and retreat before every major blood pattern. | Leaves enough counter capacity for mistakes late in the fight. | The battle takes longer, so concentration against repeated waves is required. |
| Aggressive trading | Stay close during surfacing phases and accept occasional blood hits to increase immediate damage. | Can shorten visible phases if execution is clean. | Several hits can empty the counter and enable the killing grab, even with Carmilla near defeat. |
For a first clear, the curse-preserving approach is the more consistent decision because the counter cannot be healed. An aggressive plan only makes sense when you can reliably identify every safe landing area and know that the next hit will not consume your final point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure points and fixes
“I healed, but the curse number did not return.”
That is expected. Healing affects ordinary health, not the blood-curse counter. Stop treating a healing item or spell as permission to absorb another blood attack; once the counter is low, only clean movement protects the run.
“I keep jumping into the pillars.”
Wait for the floor marks, move into a gap and decide where Rose will land before jumping. In the pillar-and-wave combination, the landing zone must be safe from both hazards.
“I reached the last part of the health bar and died instantly.”
Carmilla’s curse condition is independent of her health. A nearly empty bar does not disable the grab. Keep the same spacing and attack discipline until the fight actually ends.

“The grapple route never appeared.”
Return to the Lecture Room, inspect the Star Chart and compare it with the astrolabe again. The route opens only after the constellation pattern has been aligned correctly; reaching the Planetarium alone does not activate it.
“I cannot damage Carmilla while she is under the blood.”
Do not pursue her beneath the pool. Wait for the next surfacing, use that window to attack or finish a shield, and spend the submerged phase preparing for the next wave or pillar pattern.

Carmilla is also identified among the returning Castlevania foes in published coverage of the PS5 version. A 2026 boss-order reference counts 14 bosses and 18 encounters, a total that includes returning fights; that figure is not a claim that every encounter is a unique boss.
What is and is not established about the fight
The documented mechanics support the eight-point curse counter, the shield-first priority, Carmilla’s surfacing behavior, blood waves, marked pillars and the killing grab. They do not establish reliable exact damage numbers, a confirmed elemental weakness or one optimal build. Any recommendation that depends on a specific resistance, damage threshold or mandatory weapon goes beyond the available evidence.
The full-game route is reported as launching on October 15, 2026, and the PS5 review coverage identifies Carmilla as one of the returning foes. Availability, edition and region can differ, so those details should be checked against the version you are playing rather than inferred from a boss guide.
