Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes place in Paris in 1499, twenty-three years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Rose Belmont, Trevor Belmont’s daughter and successor, fights through a city overrun by monsters and into Dracula’s castle with the Vampire Killer. The official premise also points to a hidden conspiracy beneath the attack. Konami has confirmed the setting, characters, bosses and Arcana system, but has not published a complete ending, so the final twist should not be treated as established without a spoiler-complete primary source.
Where Belmont’s Curse fits in the Castlevania timeline
The game belongs immediately after Trevor Belmont’s era in the original Castlevania chronology. Konami places it in 1499 and describes that date as 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. That makes the practical reading order straightforward: play or read about Trevor’s chapter first, then follow Rose into the next Belmont story.

| Year | Chronology entry | How the date is established |
|---|---|---|
| 1476 | Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse | The commonly used in-series year for Trevor Belmont’s preceding adventure; the Belmont’s Curse pages refer to this chapter without printing the year themselves. |
| 1499 | Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Konami states that the story unfolds in Paris 23 years after Castlevania III. |
The 1476 date is therefore useful continuity context rather than a newly quoted date from the Belmont’s Curse announcement. The important anchor is the interval: Rose’s adventure is not a retelling of Trevor’s campaign and is not set during the same crisis. It is a later House of Belmont chapter in which the next generation inherits the family’s mission.

Konami’s opening description starts with a city in immediate collapse: 1499. Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows.
The disaster is public and physical before it becomes a mystery. Streets are burning, monsters are appearing without warning, and the people of Paris face the prospect of eternal darkness.

Trevor Belmont enters this emergency with his daughter Rose. The pair carry the legendary Vampire Killer and move toward the source of the creatures: Dracula’s castle. The launch description frames their objective in practical terms—hunt the monsters, explore the burning streets and the castle, and save the Parisians—while the official introduction adds a second layer when Rose is drawn into a dark conspiracy beneath the outbreak.
That wording matters for understanding the plot. The castle is the visible destination, but the monster attack is not presented as the whole explanation. Rose is investigating why the crisis exists and who benefits from it, not merely clearing a sequence of unrelated stages.
Rose Belmont, Trevor’s daughter and the new lead
Rose is explicitly identified as Trevor Belmont’s daughter. The PlayStation Blog calls her Trevor’s successor, making her role more specific than that of a companion or supporting character. She is the Belmont who must carry the family’s weapons, obligations and reputation into a new historical moment.

Trevor’s presence connects the opening to the previous game, but the narrative emphasis is Rose’s growth. Konami describes the title as a 2D action-exploration game that depicts her development. Her progression is therefore part of the story’s subject: she is learning to operate as the principal Belmont while confronting a threat that has already pushed Paris into chaos.
The relationship also explains why the Vampire Killer appears at the start. The whip is not an arbitrary item Rose discovers after the plot begins; it is a family relic used by the Belmont line against supernatural enemies. Rose’s use of it visually and mechanically marks the transfer from Trevor’s generation to hers.
From the city to Dracula’s castle
The confirmed route has two connected spaces. Rose first explores Paris, where the sudden emergence of creatures has left civilians in danger. She then advances toward Dracula’s castle, the looming structure associated with the attack and the central threat named in the launch material.

Official descriptions do not publish a room-by-room chronology, so the safest way to describe the progression is by its narrative function:

- Contain the outbreak. Rose confronts the creatures appearing in Paris and begins the rescue effort.
- Follow the source. Evidence and the escalating danger draw her toward Dracula’s castle rather than leaving the crisis confined to the streets.
- Uncover the conspiracy. The immediate monster attack opens onto a concealed plot, giving Rose a reason to investigate beyond defeating individual enemies.
- Grow into the successor role. Weapons, relics, secret chambers and boss-derived Arcana expand what Rose can do as the adventure progresses.
This structure makes the setting more than scenery. Paris supplies the human emergency, while the castle provides the supernatural center and the spaces in which the hidden plot can be pursued.
What the conspiracy means—and what is not yet confirmed
Konami’s official copy confirms that Rose becomes involved in a dark conspiracy beneath the monster attack. It does not identify every conspirator, explain the full motive, or publish a complete sequence of revelations. Those details should not be filled in with assumptions based on other Castlevania stories.
In particular, the available official pages do not establish a final villain, a definitive betrayal, or the exact resolution of Rose’s investigation. A summary can accurately say that the attack conceals a conspiracy and that Rose pursues it through Paris and Dracula’s castle. It cannot responsibly present an invented final twist as canon.
Bosses and the tarot-card Arcana system
The official site names Death, Medusa, Carmilla and Joan of Arc among the bosses. Their inclusion establishes the range of opponents Rose faces, but the published material does not provide a complete boss order or a scene-by-scene account of each encounter.

- Death: named by Konami as one of the bosses whose defeat can contribute to the Arcana system.
- Medusa: another officially named boss in Rose’s campaign.
- Carmilla: included in the official boss list.
- Joan of Arc: also identified by the official site as a boss.
Because the cards are tarot-based, the mechanic gives the supernatural conflict a visual language tied to fate, identity and transformation. That thematic reading is supported by the card-and-Arcana structure itself; the official material does not assign a separate symbolic meaning to each named card.
The Vampire Killer, weapons and exploration
The Vampire Killer is Rose’s principal connection to Belmont tradition. Both the launch announcement and the PlayStation Blog identify it as the legendary holy whip carried into the crisis. Its presence establishes that Rose is acting as a Belmont hunter, not simply as a civilian caught in Paris’s destruction.
The whip is not the only tool available. The official descriptions refer to additional weapons, relics, secret chambers and hidden items. These features support the game’s action-exploration identity:
- Weapons give Rose more than one way to confront monsters.
- Relics expand her options as she advances.
- Secret chambers reward searching beyond the most obvious route.
- Hidden items make backtracking and careful exploration part of the adventure.
- Arcana add spells and special actions earned through boss victories.
The sources describe these elements as parts of Rose’s adventure, but they do not publish a complete inventory, control scheme or unlock order. Claims about a specific weapon’s statistics or an exact Arcana combination require direct game documentation rather than the launch premise.
How Belmont’s Curse connects to Castlevania III
The connection is chronological, familial and thematic.
Chronological connection
The 1499 setting follows the Trevor chapter by 23 years. This is the clearest link and the reason Castlevania III is the natural preceding story.

Family connection
Trevor is Rose’s father. His earlier victory establishes the reputation Rose inherits, while her role as successor shifts the focus from the original hero to the next Belmont.

Mission connection
Both stories center on the Belmont family confronting supernatural forces associated with Dracula. Belmont’s Curse changes the location and lead character without abandoning that central duty.
Design connection
The game remains a 2D action-exploration adventure, but its official description emphasizes faster, more fluid gameplay and Rose’s growth. That makes it a continuation of the family’s story rather than a duplicate of Trevor’s campaign.
There is no indication in the official material that Belmont’s Curse simply retells the events of Castlevania III. Treating it as a separate chapter preserves the stated 23-year gap and Rose’s successor role.

For readers who want the premise without unverified spoilers, the confirmed sequence is enough to establish the stakes:
- Paris reaches a crisis point in 1499 when monsters emerge and the city burns.
- Trevor and Rose enter the danger zone with the Vampire Killer.
- Rose takes responsibility for exploring the city and Dracula’s castle.
- She fights named bosses, whose defeats produce tarot-card Arcana.
- The attack leads to a concealed conspiracy that Rose must investigate.
This outline deliberately stops before a claimed ending. Konami’s product and launch pages establish the opening, the cast, the setting and the progression devices, but they do not publish the complete finale. Any account that names the final revelation should identify a spoiler-complete primary source or direct game verification.

Why the 1499 setting matters
Placing the story in 1499 gives the sequel a distinct historical and emotional position. Rose is not entering the same medieval crisis Trevor faced; she is confronting a new outbreak more than two decades later, in a major city already being consumed by fire. The gap allows the narrative to show a family legacy being passed on rather than replayed.
Paris also changes the scale of the opening problem. The danger is not limited to a remote fortress. Civilians are threatened in the streets, and Rose’s stated mission includes saving them from eternal darkness. The journey to Dracula’s castle therefore grows out of a public emergency, while the hidden conspiracy supplies the mystery that keeps the plot moving after the first monsters appear.

The simplest way to remember the story
Think of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse as the handoff from Trevor’s completed chapter to Rose’s first major test. The timeline moves from the commonly used 1476 setting of Castlevania III to Paris in 1499. A citywide monster outbreak sends Rose and Trevor toward Dracula’s castle; Rose then becomes the investigator and hunter at the center of a concealed conspiracy. Her progress is expressed through the Vampire Killer, exploration tools and Arcana created from defeated bosses.
