Choose Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse if you want one new, modern 2D action-exploration adventure starring Rose Belmont. Choose Castlevania Anniversary Collection if you want a broad look at classic Castlevania design and several early-era games in one package. If you are new to Castlevania and want to understand its roots, start with the collection; if you already know the series and want its freshest release, start with Belmont’s Curse.
The short answer
These are not two editions of the same game. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a single new campaign built around Rose Belmont. Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a multi-game historical sampler containing classic titles, including Castlevania Bloodlines, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Kid Dracula. Your choice is therefore mainly about whether you want a current adventure or a curated trip through older Castlevania games.

What Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse actually is
A new Rose Belmont adventure
Konami describes Belmont’s Curse as “a 2D action-exploration game that depicts the growth of Rose Belmont.” That wording matters: this is a new protagonist and a new campaign, not a compilation of previously released stages. The design brief combines action with exploration, so it is aimed at players who want to move through an adventure rather than simply select a title from a museum-like menu.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe official European product description places the story 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. That gives the game a clear relationship to a known point in the series timeline while still presenting Rose’s story as its own experience. You do not need to treat the 23-year gap as a play-order requirement; it is a setting detail that explains where the new game sits relative to one classic.

Modern presentation, with a specific caveat
Contemporary coverage describes the presentation as 2.5D, with anime-influenced character portraits and animated cutscenes. In practical terms, that points to a game that frames its 2D action with more modern visual staging than the older games in the collection. The “curse” is also observed as mainly a plot point rather than a system that fundamentally changes how the game plays. That is a description of the narrative role, not a promise that every player will interpret the story in the same way.
A launch review from TechRadar reported occasional glitches, including enemies appearing to phase out and awkward platforming moments. Those are review observations rather than a guarantee of what every player will encounter. They are still useful when setting expectations: choose Belmont’s Curse for its new adventure and presentation, but allow for some rough edges associated with a launch release.

What Castlevania Anniversary Collection actually is
A multi-game historical sampler
Castlevania Anniversary Collection is built around breadth. Konami’s launch material identifies games such as Castlevania Bloodlines, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Kid Dracula; the lineup announcement also identifies Castlevania: The Adventure. The package is therefore best understood as a selection of classic releases rather than one new Rose Belmont campaign.
That structure changes how you spend your time. You can move between different games, compare their approaches and stop after a short session without committing to one long modern adventure. It also means that the collection preserves the differences between its included eras instead of smoothing them into one consistent control or pacing model.
Why M2 matters to the collection
Konami’s 2019 launch materials name M2 as the partner that adapted the classics for modern systems. The important implication is preservation with contemporary-system support: these are older games presented for current platforms, not newly remade campaigns. Their period-specific platforming conventions, enemy patterns and pacing remain part of the experience.

Konami lists the collection for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Xbox Series X|S.

Notice the platform distinction: the collection is officially listed for PlayStation 4, while Belmont’s Curse is identified for PlayStation 5. Both are listed for Switch and Xbox Series X|S, but their PlayStation generation listings differ.

Which one should you play first?
If you are completely new to Castlevania
Start with Anniversary Collection if “first” means learning why the franchise matters. Its identified lineup includes Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the game that provides the reference point for Belmont’s Curse’s 23-year time jump. You can see the older platforming conventions and pacing directly, then decide whether you enjoy that style before moving to a newer interpretation.
Start with Belmont’s Curse if “first” means wanting the least archival-looking entry. It is the direct choice for a player who prefers a new protagonist, a single current adventure and modern visual presentation. You will not be using it as a survey of the franchise’s early history; you will be using it as an immediately contemporary action-exploration game.
If you already know the classic games
Choose Belmont’s Curse first. Its Rose Belmont storyline, 2D/2.5D presentation and faster, more fluid gameplay are the elements most likely to feel new to a returning player. The 23-year placement after Dracula’s Curse adds continuity without asking you to replay the collection before beginning.
Choose the collection first instead if your goal is comparison. Playing several of the older titles side by side gives you a baseline for judging how a modern Castlevania handles movement, exploration and presentation. That is a curiosity-driven route, not the fastest route to the newest adventure.
If you want variety rather than one campaign
The collection is the clear fit. A package containing Bloodlines, Dracula’s Curse, Kid Dracula and The Adventure, among the games identified by Konami’s materials, lets you change games when a particular period or approach stops being appealing. Belmont’s Curse cannot offer that kind of menu variety because its purpose is to deliver one coherent Rose Belmont adventure.
If you want a focused story
Belmont’s Curse is the more natural choice. The game is organized around Rose’s growth, while the collection’s identity comes from preserving multiple separate classic releases. Pick the collection when the act of sampling matters more than following one new protagonist.
Do you want the new game or the old-school games?
Choose the new game when presentation is part of the appeal
The modern option is not defined only by its release date. Its identity comes from combining 2D action-exploration with newer audiovisual framing: anime-influenced character portraits and animated cutscenes were noted in contemporary coverage, and the gameplay is described as faster and more fluid than the older conventions the collection preserves. If you want the feeling of entering a current release without leaving Castlevania’s 2D foundation, this is the relevant distinction.
Choose the old-school package when historical texture matters
The collection is valuable precisely because the games retain their period character. Older enemy patterns, platforming conventions and era-specific pacing can feel deliberate, demanding or simply unfamiliar compared with a modern action-exploration title. Those traits are not defects to be patched out; they are part of what you are choosing when you buy a historical sampler.

That also means the collection may ask for more patience. A player accustomed to contemporary flow should expect differences from game to game rather than one standardized experience. Conversely, a player who enjoys seeing how design changes across releases gets more information from the collection than from a single new campaign.

Both products are listed for Nintendo Switch, so the decision on that platform is about content rather than a documented hardware advantage. Nintendo lists Belmont’s Curse for Switch on October 15, 2026. Konami lists Anniversary Collection for Switch as part of its modern-system release lineup.
| Switch priority | Better match |

Potential drawbacks to understand before buying
Belmont’s Curse: new-release rough edges
TechRadar’s launch review noted occasional glitches, including enemies phasing out and awkward platforming. Treat that as a risk signal, not a universal verdict. If you are highly sensitive to launch-period bugs, waiting for platform-holder updates or broader post-release reporting may be sensible; the available material does not document a specific patch schedule or claim that every copy has the same issues.
Creative Bloq’s observation that the curse functions mainly as a plot point also helps set expectations. Do not buy the game assuming the title describes a sweeping ruleset that transforms every system. Its selling points in the available descriptions are Rose’s growth, action-exploration, faster and more fluid play, and modern presentation.
Anniversary Collection: period design is the point
The collection’s older games preserve their original design assumptions. Enemy patterns and platforming conventions may feel less forgiving or less immediately readable than those in a current action game, and era-specific pacing can make the package feel uneven if you expect one continuous modern campaign. That is the trade-off for historical breadth.
Do not choose the collection expecting a single new storyline centered on Rose. Its value is the ability to examine several classic Castlevania releases, including the titles identified in Konami’s materials, with M2’s modern-system adaptation work supporting the package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical decision process
- Decide whether you want one campaign or several games. Select Belmont’s Curse for one new Rose Belmont adventure; select Anniversary Collection for a multi-game package.
- Choose your preferred design era. Pick the modern 2D/2.5D presentation and faster, more fluid emphasis of Belmont’s Curse, or the classic conventions and pacing preserved in the collection.
- Check your platform. Belmont’s Curse is identified for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch. Anniversary Collection is listed for PlayStation 4, Switch, Steam and Xbox Series X|S.
- Use the timeline only if it helps your goal. The new game is set 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Play that classic first if you want context; skip directly to Rose’s story if you mainly want the modern release.
- Set expectations about roughness. Allow for the occasional glitches and awkward platforming reported in one launch review of Belmont’s Curse. Allow for period-specific difficulty and pacing in the collection.
Recommended play orders
For a history-first newcomer
- Begin with Castlevania Anniversary Collection.
- Use Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse as the historical reference point for the later setting.
- Sample the other identified classics, including Bloodlines, Kid Dracula and The Adventure, to experience the range within the package.
- Move to Belmont’s Curse when you want a modern Rose Belmont adventure.
For a modern-game-first player
- Start with Belmont’s Curse.
- Read its “23 years after” placement as context rather than a prerequisite.
- Try Anniversary Collection afterward if Rose’s story makes you curious about the classic game referenced by its timeline.
For a returning fan comparing eras
- Play one or more of the collection’s classic titles to refresh the older design language.
- Switch to Belmont’s Curse and compare its action-exploration structure and modern presentation with that baseline.
- Keep the two experiences separate in your expectations: the collection preserves history, while the new game interprets the series for a current release.
Final recommendation
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is the better choice for a fresh adventure, Rose Belmont’s story and contemporary 2D/2.5D presentation. Castlevania Anniversary Collection is the better choice for classic-game breadth, historical context and the chance to experience several early Castlevania releases adapted for modern systems. On Switch, both are legitimate options; the deciding question is whether you want the newest single campaign or the older games that show where the series came from.
