Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse weapon types compared: damage, range, speed, and effects

There is no single best weapon type in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. Greatsword is the strongest crowd-control choice, Longsword is the safest all-purpose pick, Dual Swords and charged Cestus excel during short boss openings, and Whip or Spear/Lance let you deal damage while keeping space. Sword and Shield is the defensive option.

The game is described by the 2026 AllThingsHow and GamesRadar+ guides as having seven weapon families, with four weapons in each family. Their differences are primarily in movesets, reach, timing and special effects rather than a clean stat ladder. Exact damage-per-second rankings should therefore be treated as provisional: the Belmont’s Curse Atlas states that its displayed DPS is a game value, not a measured damage-per-second test.

How the weapon system is organized

Belmont’s Curse is commonly described as having seven weapon families: Longsword, Greatsword, Cestus, Dual Swords, Sword and Shield, Spear/Lance, and Whip. The 2026 AllThingsHow and GamesRadar+ guides each describe four weapons per family, for a total of 28 weapons. That count describes the family structure; it does not mean every weapon in a family performs identically.

The practical choice is a moveset decision. A weapon’s attack arc, recovery time, grapple behavior, charge mechanic, guard option or special effect can matter more than its displayed damage. A slower weapon that hits several enemies can outperform a faster weapon in a crowded room, while a short-range weapon can win a boss phase if it converts a brief opening into a sustained combo.

Use the table below as a role map rather than a definitive tier list. “Speed” describes handling and commitment, not frame-tested attack speed.

Weapon families compared

Type Damage behavior Range and coverage Speed and handling Signature effects or use
Longsword / one-handed sword Balanced damage; movement-linked bonus damage Medium reach; dash-through finisher Medium and balanced Extra damage after a slide or backdash; Valmanway adds delayed wind damage
Greatsword Slow attacks with heavy, multi-target hits Wide arc; spinning grapple can cover 360 degrees Slow and charge-oriented Guide-described hyper armor while charged; strong crowd control
Cestus Damage increases through sustained combo charge Short range Fast close-range strings Uppercut and launching grapple; charge multipliers
Dual Swords Fast, high-damage strings Short to medium Fast Recommended for punishing bosses during brief openings
Sword and Shield Varies by weapon tier Close range with frontal coverage Moderate Holding attack guards frontal strikes
Spear / Lance Safe poke damage; can be thrown Long reach Slower commitment than close-range strings Hold to aim and release to throw; named weapons may add pursuit or piercing
Whip Tip hits deal more damage Longest room-scale reach; diagonal aiming Spacing-focused Grapple spacing; Vampire Killer adds burning tip hits and fiery kill explosions

What each weapon type is good at

Longsword: the dependable exploration weapon

Longsword is the balanced starting option. Its reach is long enough for ordinary enemies, its recovery is easier to manage than a Greatsword’s, and it does not force you into the close-contact rhythm required by Cestus or Dual Swords. The AllThingsHow comparison treats it as an all-rounder without a major weakness.

The family’s distinctive damage comes from movement. A slide or backdash can trigger extra damage, and the dash-through finisher gives you a way to pass through an enemy instead of stopping in front of it. This makes Longsword useful when a room mixes melee attackers with hazards: strike, move through the target, and keep your position rather than standing still for a second exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valmanway is the notable effect example in this family. Its delayed wind damage means the visible sword swing is not the entire attack sequence. When judging it, allow the delayed hit to resolve before comparing it with a weapon whose damage appears immediately.

Greatsword: the crowd-control specialist

Greatsword trades speed for impact. Its swings are slow, but the arcs are broad and built to hit several targets. The spinning grapple attack can cover a full 360-degree area, giving the weapon an answer when enemies surround you rather than approaching from one lane.

The charge-oriented handling is the central constraint. Starting an attack commits you for longer, so Greatsword is strongest when enemies are grouped, staggered or predictable. The comparison guide describes hyper armor during the charged state; that lets you continue through some incoming attacks, but it does not remove the need to choose the charge timing carefully.

Use Greatsword in rooms where one sweep can remove multiple threats. Against a single mobile target, its slow wind-up can leave you waiting for an opening that a faster weapon would exploit immediately.

Cestus: fast strings with a charge payoff

Cestus is the short-range, high-tempo family. Its punches arrive quickly and its uppercut can launch an enemy, creating a transition into a grapple or follow-up string. The cost is proximity: you must stay close enough to keep the sequence alive.

The Belmont’s Curse Atlas reports charge multipliers of 1× at one charge point, 1.2× at four points and 2× at nine points. These are guide-reported in-game values, not independent frame-tested measurements. The important practical point is that Cestus damage ramps with sustained combo charge. Breaking away too early protects you, but also gives up the higher multiplier.

Cestus is therefore a strong choice for players who can read enemy recovery animations and maintain contact. It is less forgiving in rooms with frequent projectiles, area attacks or enemies that cannot be safely approached.

Dual Swords: burst damage in boss openings

Dual Swords emphasize rapid strings and short recovery. The comparison guide recommends them for fast boss damage windows: when a boss is vulnerable for only a moment, several quick hits can convert that opening before the target moves or retaliates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The family has less reach than Whip or Spear/Lance, so the setup matters. Enter the opening already within striking distance, spend the safe portion of the window on the string, then disengage rather than extending the sequence after the boss becomes active. Their value is concentrated burst, not room-wide control.

Against ordinary enemies, Dual Swords can still clear quickly, but the short-to-medium range means you must manage positioning more actively than with a Longsword.

Sword and Shield: frontal defense first

Sword and Shield is the defensive family. Its attack range is close, and the weapon’s damage depends on the tier of the specific sword, but its defining feature is protection: holding attack guards against frontal strikes.

Guard changes the decision from “can I kill before the hit arrives?” to “is the threat in front of me?” It is valuable when an enemy’s attack is clearly telegraphed and you cannot safely sidestep. The protection is directional, so attacks from behind, above or outside the guard’s front should still be handled with movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose this family when surviving contact is more important than maximizing damage. It is particularly suitable for learning an unfamiliar encounter, where a reliable frontal answer gives you time to recognize patterns.

Spear and Lance: reach, pokes and thrown attacks

Spear/Lance provides long reach and a safer poke pattern than close-range weapons. You can hold the attack to aim and release to throw, turning the family into both a melee and ranged option. That flexibility is useful when an enemy is approaching from a predictable lane or when closing distance would expose you to a counterattack.

The commitment is slower than a close-range string. A missed thrust or poorly timed throw can leave you waiting while a fast enemy advances. Keep the weapon at the edge of its range, confirm the target’s recovery, and release the throw when the line is clear.

Named spear effects can add pursuit or piercing behavior, according to the Atlas descriptions. Those effects can change which targets are safe to poke, so compare the effect text with the encounter rather than assuming the highest displayed damage is always best.

Whip: spacing and precision at the tip

Whip has the longest room-scale reach among the listed families and can be aimed diagonally. Its damage is not uniform along the attack: tip hits deal more damage. The weapon rewards deliberate spacing, because standing at the end of the lash both increases output and keeps many enemies outside their own attack range.

The grapple also supports repositioning. You can use it to create distance or change your angle instead of treating it only as a damage tool. This makes Whip effective in rooms where enemies approach from different heights or directions.

Vampire Killer adds burning tip hits and fiery explosions when enemies die, according to the cited guide descriptions. Those effects make the weapon’s value larger than the first impact number suggests: a correctly placed tip hit can apply its special behavior, and a kill can affect nearby enemies through the explosion. A TechRadar review summarized the practical appeal by noting that the whip rewarded distance with better damage output, with spear as a close alternative.

Why displayed DPS is not a complete ranking

The Belmont’s Curse Atlas explicitly says that listed DPS is the game’s display value, not a measured damage-per-second result. It should not be read as a laboratory benchmark that accounts for attack animation length, recovery, missed hits, multi-target coverage, charge time, delayed effects or travel time on thrown weapons.

For example, a Whip’s tip bonus requires spacing and accuracy; a Cestus multiplier requires maintaining a charge; Valmanway’s wind damage arrives after the initial swing; and Greatsword can hit several enemies with one broad attack. A single number cannot represent those conditions without a defined test protocol.

The available guides also do not establish a complete final-release table of frame data, hitbox dimensions, attack speeds, range measurements or balance changes. Treat the family roles and named effects as guide-supported descriptions. Exact rankings should be confirmed in the game rather than presented as universal facts.

Choosing by the situation on screen

For crowds and wide hitboxes

Start with Greatsword. Its broad sweep and spinning grapple are designed for groups, and the charged state can help you continue through pressure. If enemies are spread too far apart to catch in one arc, a Whip or Spear/Lance may save time by reaching the next target without a long reposition.

For general exploration

Use Longsword when you want one weapon that handles most rooms without a severe weakness. Its movement-linked bonuses reward active positioning, and the medium range is less demanding than the close-contact approach of Cestus or Dual Swords.

For boss punish windows

Dual Swords are the direct burst choice. Cestus is an alternative when you can remain close long enough to build its charge multiplier. Pick Dual Swords for a short, repeatable opening; pick Cestus when the boss exposes itself for a longer sequence and you can preserve contact safely.

For safe ranged play

Whip and Spear/Lance cover different versions of safety. Whip keeps a continuous line of pressure and rewards tip spacing, while Spear/Lance lets you aim and throw a discrete attack. Use Whip when diagonal targeting and repositioning matter; use Spear/Lance when a straight lane or a single puncture is more useful.

For frontal defense

Sword and Shield is the clear choice because holding attack guards frontal strikes. It sacrifices some offensive reach, so turn your character toward the threat and use movement for attacks arriving from another direction.

How to compare two weapons in play

  1. Test the same encounter. Use an enemy or room with repeatable positioning so that one weapon is not being judged against a crowd while the other is tested against a single target.
  2. Record the complete sequence. Include charge time, recovery, thrown-projectile travel, delayed wind damage, burning effects and any explosion after a kill.
  3. Separate single-target and multi-target results. Greatsword’s value rises when several enemies occupy its arc, while Dual Swords and Cestus are more dependent on sustained contact with one target.
  4. Check the condition behind the bonus. Whip needs a tip hit, Cestus needs charge points, and Longsword can gain damage after a slide or backdash. A bonus you cannot reproduce reliably is not part of your practical output.
  5. Measure survival as well as damage. Sword and Shield may finish a fight more slowly but prevent a frontal hit; that can be the better result when healing or retries are limited.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Choosing by the largest displayed number: confirm whether the figure includes delayed, charged or conditional damage before comparing it with an immediate hit.
  • Using Greatsword against a mobile solo target: wait for a commitment or switch to a faster family so recovery does not become the main risk.
  • Standing too close with Whip: move back until the tip connects; the family’s damage reward is tied to the end of the lash.
  • Dropping Cestus charge repeatedly: shorten the string or disengage only when the incoming attack requires it, because leaving the combo removes part of the weapon’s payoff.
  • Throwing Spear/Lance without an escape plan: aim from a safe lane and account for the release commitment before the enemy reaches you.
  • Treating guard as omnidirectional: face the incoming attack and reposition for threats outside the frontal guard.
  • Extending Dual Swords past the boss window: end the string as soon as the target becomes active; the family’s advantage is fast punishment, not indefinite contact.

Bottom line by player preference

  • Want one dependable weapon: Longsword.
  • Need to clear groups: Greatsword.
  • Prefer close-range combo mastery: Cestus.
  • Want the fastest boss punish strings: Dual Swords.
  • Value a frontal safety tool: Sword and Shield.
  • Prefer long pokes and throws: Spear/Lance.
  • Like precision spacing and maximum reach: Whip.

Those recommendations describe roles, not a permanent tier list. Weapon effects, enemy formation and the timing of each encounter determine which family produces the best result, and the published material does not provide enough frame-tested final-release data to claim a universal damage, range or speed champion.
