They are related by creative lineage, not because Bloodstained is an official Castlevania game. The available official descriptions establish what each offers, but not a universal winner.
What is being compared?
Castlevania is a franchise, not one game. This comparison uses Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as the Castlevania counterpart to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a useful pairing because Bloodstained creator Koji Igarashi discussed its action in relation to Symphony of the Night.
In a 2017 interview with Game Developer, Igarashi said: “Overall we try to keep that nostalgic gameplay while improving the parts we can fix in Bloodstained.” He also described Bloodstained as a response to fans’ wish for another “Igavania” game. That term reflects the interview’s framing of Igarashi’s Castlevania design lineage; it is not an official Castlevania label.
How do the games differ?
| Question | Symphony of the Night | Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A 1997 Castlevania game starring Alucard, as described by Konami. | A 2019 exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG by Koji Igarashi, developed by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games, according to Steam. |
| Officially described focus | Konami highlights magical transformations, hidden weapons, secrets, and more than 140 enemies, bosses, and creatures. The count is the publisher’s description, not an independently audited tally. | Steam describes Miriam fighting through a demon-infested castle to stop a curse crystallizing her body, with weapons, spells, voice-acted scenes, and 2.5D graphics. These are storefront descriptions, not independent assessments of quality. |
| Original release information | Konami lists October 2, 1997, for PlayStation and Sega Saturn. | Steam lists June 18, 2019. |
Neither those descriptions nor the available evidence establish a like-for-like verdict on atmosphere, difficulty, pacing, or which game is better. There is no verified comparable figure here for playtime, completion time, sales, or critic scores, so a numerical winner would be misleading.

Which one should you play first?
Choose Symphony of the Night if
- You want the specific classic Castlevania entry at the center of this comparison.
- Alucard, magical transformations, hidden weapons, secrets, and a large roster of enemies are the features that interest you.
Choose Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night if
- You want Igarashi’s later exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG rather than an official Castlevania title.
- Miriam’s curse, the demon-infested castle, and the listed weapons, spells, voice-acted scenes, and 2.5D presentation appeal to you.
If you are deciding between them as a first game, the choice is about which identity you want to start with: Castlevania itself, or a later game made by a creator associated with that design lineage. The source material does not establish that one is easier, shorter, or a better introduction for every player.
What Castlevania options are available?
