If your Castr YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first check whether the source also disappears from Castr’s preview. A failed preview points toward the encoder, local network, or connection to Castr; a healthy preview while YouTube stops receiving the broadcast points toward the destination or YouTube’s Go Live flow. Use the steps below to isolate the failing link before changing settings.
1. Identify which part of the stream is dropping
- At the next interruption, note the time. Check whether the Castr preview stopped at the same moment and whether YouTube showed the stream or ended it.
- If the preview also stops, investigate the encoder, broadcaster’s network, and source-to-Castr ingest path first.
- If the preview stays live but YouTube does not, focus on the YouTube destination settings and the platform’s start flow.
This is a diagnostic split based on Castr’s separate preview, input-monitoring, and destination setup guidance—not proof of a particular cause. Castr says its health charts can be reviewed live or for a past session. Its troubleshooting guide says most quality issues originate at the source encoder or streaming software, but that general guidance does not establish what is happening in an individual stream.
2. Check the encoder settings and health charts
Use Castr’s recommendations as starting points, then compare the charts with the time of each dropout. The settings are vendor recommendations, not universal YouTube requirements.

In Castr’s video and audio bitrate and frame-rate charts, look for changes around the dropout. A flat bitrate graph is characteristic of CBR in Castr’s guidance; a sudden bitrate dip can indicate a connection issue, while frame drops may mean the encoder or connection is struggling. These signals help narrow the problem but do not, by themselves, identify its exact cause.

Castr says health-chart data is available for live and past sessions and retained for 10 days. Review or save the relevant session data promptly so it is still available for comparison.
3. Verify upload capacity and the local network
- Check upload headroom. Castr recommends broadcaster upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. Its example: a 5,000 Kbps stream calls for at least 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) of upload capacity.
- Reduce competing traffic. Downloads, video calls, and cloud syncing can compete with the live stream for bandwidth. Pause them during a controlled test where practical.
- Try a wired connection. Castr recommends Ethernet because Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. If your equipment needs a cable, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one option; no particular brand, length, or model is required by the troubleshooting guidance.
Use broadcaster upload capacity for this diagnosis. Viewer playback-speed recommendations are a separate matter and should not be substituted for the source upload target.

4. Test the ingest server and source protocol
Choose a nearby ingest server
Castr recommends selecting an ingest server close to the broadcaster. A distant server can add latency and increase the chance of packet loss. If you change servers, make one change at a time and compare the preview and health charts during a test.
Consider another supported source mode
Castr’s setup guide documents RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, and WHIP source modes. If your source is using RTMP and remains unstable, Castr suggests testing SRT, which it describes as designed for unreliable networks and automatic packet-loss recovery. Switching protocols may help under some network conditions; it is not a guaranteed fix. Confirm that your encoder and current Castr setup support the mode before changing it.

5. Check the YouTube destination and start flow
Castr documents two ways to connect YouTube: an API connection, or a YouTube server and stream key. If the Castr preview is healthy but YouTube is not receiving or starting the broadcast, check that the intended destination is configured and enabled.
- With the encoder source offline, turn the added YouTube destination off in Castr.
- Bring the encoder source live and confirm that it appears in Castr’s preview.
- Turn the YouTube destination on, then check YouTube’s live-control page to see whether it receives the stream and whether the broadcast needs to be started there.
For a server-and-key connection that still fails, Castr’s 2022 troubleshooting article suggests deleting and re-adding the destination, replacing the stream key, and staying on YouTube’s Go Live page to start the broadcast. The article is older, so dashboard labels or steps may have changed. Before replacing a key, make sure the encoder and any other configured destinations are updated with the correct current key.

6. Rehearse without a public broadcast
Run a private or unlisted YouTube test before an event. First confirm that the source reaches Castr with destinations off; then enable the YouTube destination and verify the platform flow. Castr recommends monitoring Input Health during the test. Keep the test running for as long as the expected event so that recurring interruptions have time to appear.

Once you have captured the failure and are investigating its cause, consider continuity options. Castr’s setup guide describes an encoder-level backup using a second encoder and a file-level backup using a backup VOD if the live input drops. The guide says backup must be configured while the stream is disabled and enabling it changes stream keys. Check the current dashboard instructions and update affected encoder or destination settings before making this production change.
