If your Castr YouTube stream is stuck on “Starting,” first find out which stage has stopped: your encoder sending video to Castr, Castr sending it to YouTube, or YouTube waiting for you to start the scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room. Check each status in that order; “Starting” alone does not identify the cause.
Find where the stream is stuck
There are three separate stages in the path: encoder → Castr ingest → Castr’s YouTube destination → YouTube Live Control Room. A stream can be connected at one stage and still not be live at the next.

In Castr’s dashboard, note the exact source status and whether preview and stats are visible. Castr’s setup guide describes the source changing from Connecting to Connected once it locks onto the encoder feed. If it never reaches Connected, work on the source connection before changing YouTube settings.
Get the encoder feed into Castr
Check the encoder connection details
- Confirm the encoder or streaming software is running and actively streaming.
- In the encoder’s output settings, verify that the server URL and stream key match the current Castr values for the selected region and protocol. Re-copy them from the intended Castr stream if you are unsure; an old key or a URL from a different region will not send input to the expected ingest.
- Return to Castr’s stream dashboard. Look for the source to change from Connecting to Connected, and check whether preview and the stats bar appear.
Castr’s setup guide says the stats bar becomes active when it detects input. If there is no source connection, YouTube destination changes cannot fix the encoder-to-Castr link.

Check bitrate, dropped frames, and available upload
Inspect Castr’s Health Charts for bitrate drops and dropped frames. Castr Help Center guidance published in 2026 recommends upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. Its example is 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) of upload for a 5,000 Kbps stream. Treat this as a recommended margin, not a guarantee: actual stability also depends on network conditions and other traffic.
- Where the streaming computer supports it and the network path makes it practical, try wired Ethernet. Castr says Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy downloads, uploads, and other applications while diagnosing the stream.
- Choose an ingest location near the broadcaster where Castr offers a choice.
- If RTMP remains unstable, consider SRT. Castr says SRT can recover from packet loss automatically; that does not guarantee it will resolve every network problem.
Use stable encoder settings
Castr’s Help Center recommendations published in 2026 are a useful baseline when input is unstable. They are vendor recommendations, not settings tested for your particular encoder, game, or connection.

If you change settings, check the resulting source status and health charts again. A higher resolution or frame rate needs more sustained upload capacity; if the charts show drops, reduce the load or improve the connection before moving on.
Verify Castr’s YouTube destination
Castr documents two ways to configure YouTube. Identify which one your stream uses, then check that method rather than assuming the destination is connected because the source is.

YouTube API connection
- Confirm the intended YouTube channel and event remain connected through the API/OAuth setup.
- Check that the correct event is selected for this Castr stream.
- Confirm the YouTube destination is enabled once the Castr source is live.
Manual server and stream key
- Compare the YouTube streaming server and key entered in Castr with the values for the intended YouTube stream.
- Make sure the destination is enabled. Castr’s specific troubleshooting tip is to turn destinations off while the source is offline, then turn them on again after the encoder source is live.
- If you use the server-and-key method, make description changes in YouTube; Castr’s guide notes that those edits must be made there.
After checking the destination, verify whether YouTube receives a preview. A working Castr source and an active destination are separate checks.
Complete YouTube’s Go live step
For a scheduled YouTube stream, starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself complete the broadcast’s separate control-room step. YouTube Help instructs creators: “In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview to show up, and then click Go live.” Follow that sequence when the preview appears and you are ready to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation also says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so a newly enabled account may not be ready immediately.

Check for service or network incidents
Check Castr’s live status page at status.castr.com while the issue is happening. A status snapshot from an earlier date cannot establish whether there is an incident now. The page says Castr ingests are redundant and automatically rerouted if an ingest fails; that is not a promise that every interruption or configuration problem will resolve on its own.
If Castr receives the source, the destination looks correct, and YouTube still does not progress, contact Castr support. Include the time of the issue, region, protocol, exact statuses at Castr and YouTube, and whether YouTube shows a preview. These details help distinguish a source, destination, control-room, or service problem.
