cbsprovider.dll Errors: Trace DISM Before Reinstalling Windows

cbsprovider.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by DISM, not a normal application or game dependency. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair the Windows component store and protected system files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

CbsProvider.dll is the DISM Package Provider, part of Deployment Image Servicing and Management. DISM uses it while servicing Windows images, packages, optional features, drivers, and updates. Windows Update, .NET installation, WSL setup, feature changes, and other installers can therefore expose an error involving this file.

On a typical 64-bit installation, the expected location is:

C:WindowsSystem32DismCbsProvider.dll

DISM can also stage or extract the provider in a randomly named folder under %TEMP% or %WINDIR%Temp while an operation is running. Seeing the filename in DISM.log or CBS.log, or under a temporary servicing folder, does not by itself prove that the file is damaged or malicious.

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

The file is versioned with Windows. Its version depends on the Windows release, architecture, and installed servicing updates, so an old file from another computer is not a safe substitute.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
cbsprovider.dll is missing when enabling a feature Damaged component store or interrupted servicing operation Run DISM, then SFC
The file could not be loaded during Windows Update Update failure, corruption, or security-software interference Restart, install updates, then repair Windows
0x800f081f or 0x800f0906 Windows cannot find suitable source files Use matching installation media with /Source
The filename appears only in DISM.log Normal provider loading or temporary staging Check whether the actual operation failed
An antivirus product quarantined the file Possible false positive or genuine system modification Review quarantine and verify the file before restoring it
A third-party installer mentions the file The installer may have launched DISM internally Repair Windows and retry the original installation
DISM will not start at all Broader Windows, filesystem, or recovery-environment problem Try SFC, pending updates, Safe Mode, or WinRE

Common messages include:

CbsProvider.dll is missing
CbsProvider.dll cannot be located
CbsProvider.dll could not be loaded
The application could not be started because CbsProvider.dll was missing
Failed to load the provider
The source files could not be found

The exact error code belongs to the surrounding DISM, CBS, Windows Update, or optional-feature operation. It does not necessarily mean that CbsProvider.dll itself is the original cause.

Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and retry

A failed or incomplete update can leave servicing operations unable to load their providers.

Windows 11

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install everything offered.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
  7. Retry the operation that produced the error.

Windows 10

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install pending updates and restart.
  7. Retry the feature installation, update, or application setup.

If the problem began immediately after an update, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, and review the available recovery options. You may also be able to uninstall a recent update from the recovery settings.

If Windows Update itself fails, continue with the repair commands below. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance covers additional update-repair steps.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupt, or unloadable Windows servicing provider. Run DISM first because it repairs the component store that SFC uses as its repair source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish. It may appear to pause for a while.
  2. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Repeat the operation that failed.

A successful DISM repair normally ends with a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files.

If SFC says it repaired files, restart before testing again. If it cannot repair everything, run DISM again, then run SFC a second time.

The supported sequence is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM repair instructions.

If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems behind the manual troubleshooting; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the supported repair path.

Fix 3: Use matching installation media as the repair source

DISM can fail with errors such as 0x800f081f or 0x800f0906 when Windows Update cannot provide the required component files. In that case, use installation media that matches your installed edition, language, architecture, and Windows build as closely as possible.

After connecting or mounting the correct Windows installation media, identify its drive letter. The example below assumes the media is drive X::

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess

Replace X: with the actual drive letter. Do not copy the command unchanged if your media uses a different layout, and do not use an unrelated ISO.

/Source tells DISM where to find repair files. /LimitAccess prevents it from trying Windows Update instead. When the command finishes, run:

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
sfc /scannow

Restart and retry the failed feature, update, or installer.

Microsoft explains the required source matching in its Windows image repair procedure.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the path

Security software may quarantine a genuine provider from the Windows DISM directory or a temporary servicing directory. It can also detect an unrelated file using the same name.

  1. Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
  2. Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
  3. Look for a detection involving CbsProvider.dll.
  4. Note the full path.
  5. If the file is under the normal Windows servicing path or a DISM temporary staging path, verify that the file is digitally signed by Microsoft before considering restoration.
  6. Update the security product.
  7. Run a full scan.
  8. Retry DISM or the original Windows operation.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or create a broad exclusion merely to make the error disappear. A file in a temporary folder is not automatically malware, but a file in a user-writable location should be investigated rather than trusted by filename alone.

Fix 5: Repair the Windows feature or installer that triggered the message

If the error appeared while enabling a Windows feature, the feature operation may be the real failure.

  1. Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Clear the affected feature if it is partially enabled.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if prompted.
  6. Run DISM and SFC as described above.
  7. Return to Turn Windows features on or off and enable the feature again.

This is relevant to .NET Framework features, optional Windows components, WSL, update packages, and enterprise deployment tools. If a third-party installer reports the error, repair Windows first and then run the installer again from its official source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or a separate .NET runtime will replace this file. CbsProvider.dll belongs to Windows servicing rather than those redistributable packages.

Fix 6: Check the architecture and avoid manual DLL replacement

On 64-bit Windows, use the installed 64-bit Windows repair tools and a matching 64-bit installation source. A 32-bit DLL copied into System32 is not a valid repair, and SysWOW64 is not a general replacement location.

Do not download CbsProvider.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another PC. The file may be malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows version, or an old servicing build. Even a correctly named file may not repair the component store and can create signature or servicing errors.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation instead.

Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

Do not run:

regsvr32 CbsProvider.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate COM registration entry points. Microsoft does not document manually registering CbsProvider.dll as a repair procedure, and registration does not rebuild a damaged Windows component store.

Fix 7: Check storage and use recovery options

Repeated DISM and SFC failures can indicate filesystem or storage corruption.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run:
chkdsk /scan
  1. Follow any repair recommendation.
  2. Restart if requested.
  3. Run DISM and SFC again.

If the issue started after a driver, application, or servicing change, use System Restore:

  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Select Finish.

System Restore generally leaves personal files untouched, but it rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

If Windows cannot boot or DISM cannot run normally, start Windows Recovery Environment, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, and use offline repair procedures appropriate to the Windows installation drive. If no suitable restore point exists, back up personal data and consider a repair installation or another option listed in Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance.

Updating drivers

Drivers are not the usual cause of a CbsProvider.dll failure, but a recent driver or device change can coincide with servicing problems.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failed operation.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available.

Avoid downloading drivers from unofficial sources. Use Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s official support channel.

When manually checking many devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. A driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows servicing when DISM or SFC is the actual failure.

When to contact Microsoft support

Get further help when:

  • DISM fails with a matching source and Windows Update source.
  • SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files.
  • The computer shows disk errors or unexpected shutdowns.
  • Windows cannot boot normally.
  • The error survives System Restore and a repair installation is being considered.
  • Antivirus reports an active infection or unauthorized system modification.

Before contacting support, record the Windows version and architecture, the exact operation that failed, the full HRESULT, and relevant entries from DISM.log and CBS.log. A filename appearing in a log is not enough; the surrounding error and operation identify the real fault.

FAQ

Is cbsprovider.dll a Windows file?

Yes. It is the DISM Package Provider, a Microsoft Windows servicing component.

Where should cbsprovider.dll be located?

A normal 64-bit installation commonly uses:

C:WindowsSystem32DismCbsProvider.dll

DISM may also load a staged copy from a temporary directory while servicing Windows.

Should I download the DLL?

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or Windows recovery tools. A loose DLL can be malicious or incompatible.

Does the error mean the file is actually missing?

Not always. The message may describe a provider-loading failure, a damaged component store, missing source files, or an interrupted update. The file may appear normally in a log even when it is not defective.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not to replace this file. Those packages do not provide the Windows DISM Package Provider.

Will regsvr32 fix it?

No. Manually registering CbsProvider.dll is not a Microsoft-supported repair for DISM or the Windows component store.

What if DISM reports that source files cannot be found?

Use installation media matching your Windows edition, language, architecture, and build, then run DISM with the correct /Source path and /LimitAccess. Finish with sfc /scannow.
