cddbui.dll Not Found? Restore the App That Needs It Safely

The exact message may read, “This application failed to start because cddbui.dll was not found.” The cddbui.dll file is a legacy Gracenote component called the CDDBUIControl Module, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the older music, CD-ripping, or burning application that installed it.

Do not start by copying a replacement DLL into System32. This is an application DLL, not a Windows component, and the correct copy must match the program, architecture, version, and expected folder.

  • When opening an old music or CD application: Repair or reinstall that specific application first.
  • After an antivirus alert: Check Protection History. Restore the file only when it came from a trusted, intact installation and the detection is clearly incorrect.
  • At Windows startup, with no visible application: Remove the obsolete startup entry or scheduled task, or uninstall the abandoned program.
  • After downloading or copying a DLL manually: Remove that copy and reinstall the parent application from its original installer.
  • With an error mentioning MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or another Microsoft runtime: Repair the named runtime instead of focusing on cddbui.dll.
  • With “not designed to run on Windows”: Suspect a damaged, incompatible, or wrong-architecture binary. Reinstall the application with the correct build.
  • After a broader Windows failure: Run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to restore a third-party application DLL.
  • With an old program that still will not run: Check compatibility, application logs, and whether its obsolete online services or installer still work on your Windows version.

What is cddbui.dll?

cddbui.dll is attributed to Gracenote, formerly known for CDDB music metadata services. Its internal or product description is CDDBUIControl Module.

Gracenote components were used by older applications to identify audio CDs and retrieve music metadata such as album and track information. Public records associate related Gracenote components with legacy applications including Winamp and Roxio, but the filename alone cannot prove which product installed a particular copy.

The commonly reported file is a 32-bit Win32 component. That means a 32-bit application may need it even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A similarly named file such as cddbuiwinamp.dll or cddbuiroxio.dll is not automatically an interchangeable replacement.

Is cddbui.dll part of Windows?

No. Available evidence identifies cddbui.dll as third-party Gracenote software, not a protected Windows file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not normally supplied by:

  • Windows itself
  • Microsoft Visual C++
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • Windows Features
  • Device Manager or a hardware driver

Reported historical listings describe a commonly seen build as version 1.2.0.44, approximately 465 KB, and x86. Those are archive metadata rather than a current official Gracenote specification. There is no current official Gracenote download page for this exact legacy DLL.

Step 1: Identify the application that needs the file

The parent application is the most important clue. Windows usually searches the application’s own directory before system directories, so the full path in the error can reveal the correct repair target.

Check the error dialog

Read the complete message and note:

  1. The application name in the window title.
  2. The executable named in the message.
  3. Any folder path shown.
  4. Whether the message appears at startup, login, application launch, or during a CD operation.

If the error names an old media player, CD suite, encoder, or plug-in, repair that product rather than downloading cddbui.dll.

Check the shortcut

If the error appears when you click a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the program folder shown in Start in.

The target executable identifies the application to repair. You can also right-click the shortcut and choose Open file location when that option is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check startup programs

If the message appears when Windows starts:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for the old music or CD application.
  4. Right-click it and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Disabling an entry prevents it from launching while you identify the parent program. It does not repair or uninstall the application.

Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for old media software. If the program is no longer needed, uninstall it and restart. If the message continues, inspect the application’s startup entry, scheduled task, or plug-in because removing the main program may leave a launcher behind.

Step 2: Repair the parent application

This is the highest-probability fix for a missing or corrupted cddbui.dll.

Repair from Windows Settings

For a compatible desktop application:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the application named in the error.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair if the option exists.
  7. Start the application again.

The exact options depend on how the application was packaged. Some traditional programs do not provide an Advanced options page.

Repair from Control Panel

For older desktop software:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find the application in Programs and Features.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Choose Repair or Change.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows.

If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it using the original installer or a legitimate vendor distribution. Back up playlists, settings, license information, and custom plug-ins before removing old software.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair succeeded when:

  • the application opens without the cddbui.dll message;
  • the program reaches its main window;
  • the affected CD or music function starts normally;
  • no new missing-DLL message appears.

If repair completes but the error remains, uninstall the application, restart, and perform a clean installation. Do not place a downloaded DLL into a system folder as a substitute for the installer.

Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine an old binary, particularly when the file is no longer maintained or has unusual characteristics.

To check Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Look for an event involving the application folder or cddbui.dll.
  6. Expand the event to read the detection details.

Restore the file only if all of these conditions are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the application came from a trusted original installer;
  • the file is in the application’s expected folder;
  • the detection is demonstrably a false positive;
  • you have confirmed the installer and application are intact.

Microsoft warns that a restored quarantined file may be detected again. When in doubt, do not restore it. Remove the application and reinstall it from a trusted source, then scan the new installation.

Step 4: Confirm the architecture and file location

The commonly indexed cddbui.dll is a 32-bit component. A 32-bit application generally needs a 32-bit dependency, even on 64-bit Windows.

Do not assume that any file with the same name is suitable. The replacement must match:

  • the parent application;
  • the application’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
  • the application’s expected build;
  • the installation folder;
  • any companion Gracenote components.

Windows normally searches the application directory before system directories. Therefore, the appropriate location is usually beside the executable that requests the DLL, not automatically C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not substitute cddbuiwinamp.dll, cddbuiroxio.dll, or another similarly named file. They are separate components.

Step 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix

regsvr32 is appropriate only for a DLL that provides a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Running it against cddbui.dll may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not prove the file is bad. It usually means the DLL is a private application component rather than a self-registering COM library.

Use the application’s installer instead. If the vendor’s own instructions specifically require registration, follow those instructions and use the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 tool for the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Install only the runtime named by the error

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not universal solutions for cddbui.dll.

Install or repair a runtime only when:

  • the error names a Microsoft runtime file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll;
  • the application documentation identifies that dependency;
  • the application installer includes the required redistributable.

Microsoft provides separate x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages in its supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Choose the architecture required by the application, not merely the architecture of Windows.

DirectX is usually irrelevant here. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime supplies legacy DirectX libraries such as D3DX, XAudio, XInput, and XACT. It does not provide Gracenote’s cddbui.dll.

Likewise, enabling a Windows Feature or installing .NET will not normally restore this application-specific file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party DLL that belonged to an old media application.

Use them when you also have symptoms such as Windows tools failing, damaged system files, update errors, or multiple unrelated applications malfunctioning.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the original application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the same application still reports cddbui.dll, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application.

If manually checking system integrity is taking repeated attempts without showing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Gracenote-dependent application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

Step 8: Update Windows and review drivers only when relevant

Install pending Windows updates before troubleshooting an old application further:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.

Drivers are unlikely to supply cddbui.dll, but outdated optical-drive, audio, or chipset drivers may cause separate CD or multimedia failures.

  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Choose Update Driver.
  8. Select Search automatically for drivers.

If you need to hunt through several hardware vendors and determine which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace cddbui.dll, so repair the parent application separately.

Step 9: Handle “not designed to run on Windows”

A message such as “The file … is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” generally points to a damaged, invalid, incompatible, or wrong-architecture binary. This wording is not specifically documented as a common cddbui.dll message, so diagnose the surrounding application rather than assuming Windows itself is missing a component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try this order:

  1. Uninstall the parent application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Reinstall it from the original installer or legitimate vendor distribution.
  4. Confirm that the installer matches your Windows architecture and the application’s requirements.
  5. Launch the program once with Run as administrator if its installer or old configuration requires elevated access.

Do not use a file copied from another computer unless both installations are the same application, build, and architecture. Even then, reinstalling is safer because the program may require additional files, registry entries, or plug-ins.

Step 10: Use compatibility settings for very old software

Some Winamp- or Roxio-era applications may install successfully but fail because their installer, licensing service, or online CDDB function is obsolete.

After obtaining the correct installer and backing up settings:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main .exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  6. Choose an older Windows version.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Launch the application again.

Compatibility mode cannot recreate discontinued online services or repair a missing dependency. If the program still fails, check the application’s Event Viewer entry:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  6. Note the failing executable and module.

That information can identify whether the failure is still cddbui.dll, another missing component, or an incompatibility in the old program.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading cddbui.dll from a random DLL archive is a poor first fix because:

  • the file may contain malware or unwanted modifications;
  • the version may not match the application;
  • the architecture may be wrong;
  • the file may belong in a different application folder;
  • companion files may still be missing;
  • copying it into a system directory can create conflicts;
  • the original installation may have been quarantined or damaged for another reason.

The safe sources are the original application media, the application’s official installer or launcher, and a legitimate vendor distribution. There is no need to register a private application DLL or place it in System32 simply because an error mentions it.

Prevention and cleanup

After restoring the application:

  • Keep a copy of the original installer and required license information.
  • Avoid manually replacing application files unless the vendor instructs you to do so.
  • Record the application folder and executable associated with the DLL.
  • Remove obsolete startup entries for software you no longer use.
  • Keep Windows Security enabled and review quarantine events before restoring files.
  • Back up playlists, settings, and custom plug-ins before reinstalling legacy media software.
  • Consider replacing unsupported software if it depends on discontinued online services.

FAQ

Is cddbui.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is identified as a Gracenote CDDBUIControl Module component associated with third-party applications.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download cddbui.dll and copy it to System32?

Do not do that by default. The correct repair is to reinstall the application that owns the file, normally placing the DLL in that application’s directory.

Does regsvr32 fix cddbui.dll?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer; it is not a general missing-DLL repair tool.

Is cddbui.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

The commonly reported file is Win32/x86. A 32-bit application may need that component on 64-bit Windows.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the error or application documentation identifies that runtime. None of them normally supplies Gracenote’s cddbui.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the program was already uninstalled?

Check Task Manager > Startup apps, scheduled tasks, shortcuts, and plug-ins. Remove the leftover startup entry or reinstall the program and uninstall it cleanly.

What if reinstalling does not help?

Check the exact full path in the error, antivirus Protection History, the application directory, and Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application. The failure may involve another dependency or an obsolete application component.

Will DISM or SFC restore the file?

Normally no. They repair protected Windows files, not a third-party Gracenote DLL. Use them only when other Windows components also appear damaged.
