CD PROJEKT RED’s six-year target for its new Witcher saga does not run from the 2022 announcement. The company said the period starts when the first game, originally codenamed Polaris and now titled The Witcher 4, is released. CD PROJEKT’s latest stated window, announced September 2, 2026, puts that release in 2028; dates for the next two games have not been announced.
What CDPR actually promised
On October 4, 2022, CD PROJEKT said the new Witcher saga would consist of three games that it intended to publish “in a six-year period starting with the release of Polaris.” The company also said the later games would build on the technical foundation established for Polaris. That is a publishing-cycle target, not a promise to release three games by 2028 or within six years of the announcement. (CD PROJEKT’s October 4, 2022 strategy announcement.)
When does the six-year period begin?
Polaris became The Witcher 4, the first installment in the new trilogy. CD PROJEKT reported that it entered full-scale production in November 2024, and CD PROJEKT RED revealed it as the saga’s first game in December 2024, with Ciri as protagonist. (Company update on 2024; The Witcher IV reveal.)
The company’s September 2, 2026 update gives The Witcher 4 a planned 2028 release window. If that plan holds, the six-year publishing period begins with the game’s eventual release, not with its announcement, reveal, or production start. CD PROJEKT has not announced release dates for the second and third games, and its six-year target should be read as a company plan rather than a guarantee. (CD PROJEKT’s September 2, 2026 update.)

Which Witcher games count toward the trilogy?
The three-game commitment refers to the new saga, not every Witcher project CD PROJEKT has in development or on its release calendar. In its 2024 management report, the company identifies The Witcher 4 as the trilogy’s first installment and lists Project Sirius and The Witcher Remake separately. Its September 2026 update also names a planned The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered and a Songs of the Past expansion. Those projects should not be counted as the second or third games of the new saga. (2024 Management Board report; September 2026 update.)
Why the “Witcher-free decade” framing needs care
The new saga’s first game is positioned as a return to the series after a long gap, but the franchise timeline is not simply a decade without Witcher releases. In May 2026, CD PROJEKT said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had reached 65 million cumulative copies sold. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski also described a planned return for Geralt in an expansion before the handoff to Ciri in The Witcher 4. The sales milestone is the company’s figure, reported in its May 28, 2026 update; it does not change which games belong to the new trilogy. (CD PROJEKT’s May 28, 2026 update.)
