cdrpeteaspi.dll Is Missing: Fix the PlayStation Emulator Safely

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“The program can’t start because cdrpeteaspi.dll is missing from your computer.”

If Windows reports that cdrpeteaspi.dll was not found or could not be loaded, the failed program is usually an older PlayStation emulator or a game bundled with emulator files. The safest fix is to restore the emulator’s original plugin package, then select a newer CD-ROM plugin or use an ISO if the old plugin cannot work on your version of Windows.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • The error appeared after deleting, moving, or reinstalling an emulator: reinstall or repair that emulator first.
  • The emulator opens but reports the DLL error when starting a game: its CD-ROM plugin setting probably points to a file that is no longer present.
  • The file vanished after an antivirus scan: check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling.
  • You downloaded a 64-bit emulator: the available public metadata identifies cdrpeteaspi.dll as a Win32, 32-bit plugin. Use a compatible 32-bit emulator and plugin arrangement.
  • The emulator expects a physical disc: switch to an installed CD-ROM plugin or configure an ISO/image file.
  • The error says “specified module could not be found” even though the DLL is visible: a dependency of the plugin may be missing, or the emulator may be loading a different plugin directory.
  • The error started after a Windows problem affecting several programs: repair Windows components, but do not expect SFC or DISM to recreate this third-party file.
  • You are considering System32, SysWOW64, regsvr32, Visual C++, or DirectX: those are not the normal fix for this application-specific plugin.

What cdrpeteaspi.dll is

cdrpeteaspi.dll is Pete Bernert’s cdrPete CD-ROM plugin for older PSEmu Pro-compatible PlayStation emulators. It is associated with Pitech cdrPete and is an application file, not a Windows component.

The plugin uses older CD-access methods, including ASPI and IOCTL interfaces. Older emulator packages, including ePSXe-style installations and some games distributed with emulator folders, may load it dynamically from a plugins directory.

That explains why the error names a DLL even when the emulator is the real problem. The emulator scans its configured plugin directory and tries to load the selected CD-ROM plugin. If the file was deleted, quarantined, moved, or left out of an incomplete installation, Windows displays a missing-DLL message.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

It does not belong in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • a general Windows DLL cache
  • a random folder chosen for downloaded DLLs

The plugin should normally sit beside the emulator’s other CD-ROM plugin files, often in a folder named plugins.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the emulator package

This is the most likely and safest repair.

If the emulator has a Repair option

  1. Save your memory-card files and emulator settings if you need them.
  2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the emulator or game that shows the error.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again.

If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you are prepared for the program’s settings to be cleared. Microsoft’s application repair guidance covers this repair and reinstall path.

If there is no Repair option

  1. Close the emulator.
  2. Back up memory cards, save states, BIOS files, and configuration files.
  3. Uninstall the emulator from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall the emulator from the legitimate publisher or distributor that supplied it.
  6. If it is an old game bundle, reinstall the complete game package rather than copying a single DLL.
  7. Start the emulator and check its CD-ROM plugin settings.

Use the package’s own copy of cdrpeteaspi.dll if it includes one. Do not replace it with a file from an unrelated emulator or a DLL download sites page. A matching plugin may depend on the host emulator’s folder structure, architecture, or configuration.

How to tell whether this worked

The emulator should open without the missing-file dialog. If it still fails, check whether the installation contains a plugins folder and whether the emulator is launching from the same installation you repaired. Old systems often have multiple copies in locations such as Downloads, Program Files, and a game directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Select another CD-ROM plugin or use an ISO

Restoring the file is not always the best long-term solution. The ASPI-based plugin was designed for older Windows environments and physical-disc access. Modern Windows may run the emulator but fail when this particular plugin attempts to access a drive.

Select an installed alternative

The exact menu names vary, but look for one of these paths:

  1. Open the emulator.
  2. Select Config, Options, or Settings.
  3. Open CD-ROM, CD Drive, or Plugins.
  4. Open the CD-ROM plugin list.
  5. Select an installed alternative that does not use the obsolete ASPI plugin.
  6. Select Apply or OK.
  7. Restart the emulator.
  8. Try the game again.

Do not select a plugin whose file is not present. If the list points to cdrpeteaspi.dll but the file is gone, choose another installed plugin or reinstall the complete plugin bundle.

Use an ISO or disc image

If the emulator supports image files:

  1. Open its CD-ROM or plugin configuration.
  2. Select an ISO or image-file plugin.
  3. Choose the image-file option from the emulator’s game menu.
  4. Browse to your legally obtained disc image.
  5. Start the game from the image.

An ISO workflow avoids many physical-drive and legacy ASPI problems. It does not repair the missing DLL, but it can remove the emulator’s need to load that plugin.

Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old emulator plugin. Do not restore it automatically. First verify that the file came from the emulator’s legitimate installation package.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Expand any entry related to the emulator or cdrpeteaspi.dll.
  7. Review the detected path and action.
  8. If it came from a trusted, legitimate installer, scan the complete installer and package before considering Restore or Allow on device.
  9. If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined and reinstall from a trusted source instead.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again. That is a reason to investigate the complete package, not a reason to disable protection.

If the file disappears after every reinstall, check Protection history again. Also check whether cloud backup or synchronization is restoring an older version of the emulator folder.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The available public metadata identifies this plugin as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That matters because a 32-bit plugin normally needs a 32-bit host emulator. A 64-bit emulator generally cannot load a 32-bit plugin simply because the file has been copied into its folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the emulator architecture as follows:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the emulator’s menu and choose Advanced options if available.
  3. Review the installation details or the publisher’s package information.
  4. If that does not identify the architecture, right-click the emulator executable and select Properties.
  5. Check the Details and Compatibility tabs.
  6. Look at the emulator’s documentation or installation package for its supported architecture.

Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by placing the file in both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders serve Windows system components and do not convert an application plugin into the right architecture.

If a 32-bit emulator works with the restored plugin but a 64-bit emulator does not, use a compatible CD-ROM plugin or an ISO-based setup instead of forcing the old DLL into the newer emulator.

Fix 5: Check the emulator’s configured plugin path

The DLL may exist but be in the wrong directory.

  1. Open the emulator.
  2. Go to Config, Options, or Settings.
  3. Open Plugins or CD-ROM.
  4. Note the selected plugin filename and folder.
  5. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  6. Confirm that the selected file exists there.
  7. If the emulator has a Scan, Rescan, or Browse button, use it to select the installed plugin.
  8. Apply the setting and restart the emulator.

Also check the shortcut being used to start the program:

  1. Right-click the emulator shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review Target and Start in.
  4. Confirm that they refer to the installation you repaired.

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. It can mean Windows found the plugin but could not load one of its dependencies. If the file is present in the configured folder and the error continues, choose another plugin or use an ISO.

Fix 6: Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this file alone

There is no verified Microsoft package that specifically installs cdrpeteaspi.dll. Installing a runtime is appropriate only when the error names that runtime.

For example, Microsoft Visual C++ may be relevant when the dialog names:

  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll

It does not supply this PlayStation emulator plugin.

DirectX and .NET should also be installed only when the emulator’s own requirements or a separate error identifies them. Installing unrelated runtimes will not restore a missing application plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 on this plugin

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An emulator CD-ROM plugin is normally loaded by the emulator from its plugin directory and does not need Windows registration.

Running this command is therefore unlikely to help:

regsvr32 cdrpeteaspi.dll

It may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. That does not prove Windows is damaged; it means the DLL is not intended to be registered that way. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the limited purpose of the command.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected

Because cdrpeteaspi.dll is a third-party application file, Windows component repair is a lower-probability fix. Use it when other protected Windows files are also failing or Windows has broader corruption symptoms.

First install pending updates and restart:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and try the emulator again. Microsoft’s SFC guidance recommends this order. These commands repair Windows components and protected Windows files; they will not normally recreate a missing emulator plugin.

Manually hunting through repair logs and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 9: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the evidence points there

cdrpeteaspi.dll is a user-mode emulator plugin, not a hardware driver. Do not start by reinstalling graphics, chipset, or CD/DVD drivers.

Consider a driver check only if Windows cannot detect the physical optical drive or Device Manager reports a separate error:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  4. Right-click the affected drive.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

If the device has a warning icon, right-click it, select Properties, and read the status under General. You can also select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to detect the hardware again. Do this only for the device with a confirmed problem.

Driver hunting across several hardware vendors can mean guessing which of dozens of versions is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation is handled by the full version, but driver repair will not replace the emulator plugin itself.

Avoid random DLL download sites

Do not download cdrpeteaspi.dll from a random DLL site and copy it into a Windows folder. That approach can introduce:

  • Malware or a tampered binary
  • The wrong plugin version
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A DLL from a different emulator package
  • A file that still lacks its required dependencies

It also leaves the broken emulator configuration untouched. Restore the file from the original legitimate emulator or game package, or replace the obsolete plugin with a compatible alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error still returns

Work through this final checklist:

  1. Confirm which emulator executable is actually launching.
  2. Search the emulator’s own folder for cdrpeteaspi.dll.
  3. Check the configured CD-ROM plugin path.
  4. Review Windows Security Protection history.
  5. Confirm whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  6. Test an alternative CD-ROM plugin.
  7. Try an ISO workflow instead of physical-disc access.
  8. Check folder permissions and whether the emulator can write to its configuration directory.
  9. Look for duplicate installations or an old desktop shortcut.
  10. Repair or reinstall the complete emulator package.
  11. Use System Restore only if the file disappeared after a known recent system change and normal recovery failed.

If the old ASPI plugin still cannot load on Windows 10 or Windows 11, replacing it is usually the practical answer. The emulator can be repaired without preserving this exact legacy component.

FAQ

Is cdrpeteaspi.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an old PlayStation emulator CD-ROM plugin associated with Pete Bernert’s cdrPete software.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Keep it in the emulator’s plugin directory. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 does not make the emulator load it.

Does the error identify the exact emulator?

No. The filename indicates the plugin, not necessarily the program that launched it. Several older PSEmu Pro-compatible emulators and bundled game packages may use similar plugins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need ASPI?

Only if the selected legacy plugin requires it. If ASPI access is unreliable on your Windows installation, select another CD-ROM plugin or use an ISO.

Is this a 64-bit DLL?

Available public metadata identifies it as Win32, or 32-bit. Treat it as a plugin for a compatible 32-bit host rather than trying to force it into a 64-bit emulator.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Not when cdrpeteaspi.dll is the only missing file named. Visual C++ applies when the error identifies a Microsoft runtime DLL.

Should I run regsvr32?

No. This emulator plugin is not normally a registered COM DLL. The emulator loads it from its plugin folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?

A required dependency may be missing, the plugin may be the wrong architecture, or the emulator may be loading a different folder. Check the configured path and try a compatible alternative plugin.

What is the best modern fix?

Restore the emulator package if you need the original setup. Otherwise, use a current compatible CD-ROM plugin or an ISO-based workflow and avoid the obsolete ASPI plugin.
