The 60-second answer
Do not download kbdus.dll from a random DLL website and do not run regsvr32 against it.
The safest repair sequence is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - After DISM finishes, run:
text
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows and test the keyboard, language switcher, or affected application.
If the problem affects only one program, repair or reinstall that program after completing the Windows repair. If the error appeared after antivirus action, a failed update, or a damaged language configuration, use the relevant checks below.
What is kbdus.dll?
kbdus.dll is the United States Keyboard Layout component supplied with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It provides the tables Windows uses to translate keyboard scan codes into virtual keys and characters for the US keyboard layout.

Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through the window manager when the corresponding input locale is active. The US keyboard identifier is 00000409. The file is associated with US English and some localized layouts that use the US keyboard table.
This is not a hardware driver. It is also not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET runtime file
- A graphics-driver dependency
- A normal application DLL that should be downloaded separately
That distinction determines the repair. Windows component repair is normally more useful than installing unrelated runtimes.
Where should kbdus.dll be located?
On a standard Windows installation, keyboard-layout DLLs are installed under the Windows directory, normally in:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, native 64-bit system files are normally in System32. The 32-bit equivalents are normally in:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →%windir%SysWOW64
This naming can be confusing. System32 is commonly the location for native 64-bit files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files used through WOW64 compatibility.
The exact file version, size, and hash can vary by Windows release, edition, architecture, servicing level, and language configuration. Do not use a file-size list from another computer as proof that your copy is correct.
Check whether Windows can find the file
Open Command Prompt and run:
where /r "%windir%" kbdus.dll
You can also check from PowerShell:
Get-ChildItem "$env:windirSystem32","$env:windirSysWOW64" -Filter kbdus.dll -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Finding a copy does not prove that it is undamaged or suitable for the process that needs it. The repair commands below are safer than manually replacing it.
Why does Windows report kbdus.dll as missing?
The message can result from several different problems:
- The protected Windows file was corrupted or deleted.
- A Windows update or servicing operation did not complete correctly.
- The component store that Windows uses for repairs is damaged.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Disk corruption repeatedly damaged system files.
- A language or keyboard-layout configuration is incomplete.
- An application has an incorrect private DLL reference.
- Malware altered or replaced a system file.
- A 32-bit application is looking through WOW64 redirection and the relevant copy is damaged.
The error may appear during sign-in, language switching, keyboard-layout activation, or application startup. An application can display the message even when the underlying problem is Windows, because that application may request a Windows keyboard-layout component while starting.
If the message appears only in one program, do not assume the entire operating system is broken. Complete the Windows checks, then investigate that application separately.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because pending servicing fixes can restore protected system components and provide the repair files DISM needs.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the keyboard and the application that showed the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If Windows Update fails, note the failure and continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly restart without running the component repair commands.

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted kbdus.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish successfully.
The command repairs the Windows image currently running. It may take time, and the progress percentage can appear to pause. Leave the window open until DISM reports its result.
Run SFC after DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window early.
Recommended Free Tools
Restart Windows when the scan finishes. Then test:
- Typing at the sign-in screen
- Switching keyboard layouts
- The Windows language indicator
- The application that reported the error
If you prefer a guided scan before deciding which repair to run, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies, while the full version performs its repair; it is optional, and DISM followed by SFC remains the Microsoft repair path for this Windows component.
Interpret the SFC result
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”
Windows did not find a protected-file integrity problem. If the error remains, check the language layout and determine whether only one application is affected.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”
Restart if you have not already done so, then test again.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”
Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the file, continue to the matching repair-source and recovery options below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSFC stops or reports that it could not perform the requested operation
Restart Windows and run the scan again from an elevated Command Prompt. If the problem continues, use Windows Recovery or a matching installation source.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file, although a detection can also indicate that a replacement file is unsafe. Do not disable antivirus protection just to make the error disappear.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
kbdus.dllor related system-file detections. - Open the relevant item and review its details.
Restore a quarantined file only when the detection is demonstrably false and the file is identified as the trusted Microsoft system component. Microsoft advises using Allow only when the file is trusted.
If you are uncertain, leave the item quarantined and run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead. If malware is suspected, run a Windows Security scan and consider Windows recovery if the system remains compromised.
Fix 4: Re-add the keyboard layout
A damaged language or keyboard configuration can cause keyboard-layout activation problems. Re-adding the layout repairs the configuration; it does not manually replace kbdus.dll.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the relevant language.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Scroll to Keyboards.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Add the required US keyboard layout.
If the layout is already present but behaves incorrectly, remove it from the same Keyboards section and add it again. Windows may list a keyboard layout under a different language than expected, so inspect the available languages rather than assuming it is missing.
Restart Windows and test the input switcher.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the installed language.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, add the required layout.
- Remove and re-add the layout if its configuration is damaged.
- Restart and test typing.
If the layout cannot be added, return to Windows Update and run DISM and SFC. A configuration change cannot repair a missing protected system file.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
If every Windows input function works but one program reports kbdus.dll, the application may have a bad installation or an incorrect private reference to a system component.
First, close the application and restart Windows. If the error returns only in that program, repair it.
Repair an application in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, use Reset if available and appropriate for the application. Reset can remove application data or settings, so back up important application data first.
If Windows does not provide repair options, uninstall the application from Installed apps, restart, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer or your organization’s approved software source.
Repair an application in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset.
- Restart and test.
If the application ships an incorrectly packaged private copy of kbdus.dll, reinstalling that application is the definitive fix. Do not copy a system DLL into the application folder to work around its installer.

Fix 6: Check architecture and the correct copy
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows can use the 32-bit system view through WOW64 file-system redirection. As a result, repairing or checking only one copy may not explain every symptom.
Use both locations when they exist:
%windir%System32
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not move files between these directories. Do not rename a 32-bit file as a replacement for a 64-bit file, or vice versa.
When the problem affects only a 32-bit application, repair the Windows component store rather than guessing which directory the application expects. The application’s own repair or reinstall may also be necessary.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptom points to input hardware
kbdus.dll is not a keyboard hardware driver, so Device Manager is not the normal repair for a missing-file message. However, if the keyboard itself is not detected, stops responding across Windows, or shows a device warning, check the hardware separately.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Look for a warning symbol.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
For a USB keyboard, also inspect Universal Serial Bus controllers and test another port. For a wireless keyboard, check its receiver, batteries, and manufacturer software.
When manually checking multiple hardware drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers with its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing kbdus.dll with DISM and SFC.
Do not use regsvr32 for kbdus.dll
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX or COM components.
A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded as a layout table. It is not normally registered like a COM server. Therefore, this command is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 kbdus.dll
It may produce another error without repairing the missing or corrupted system component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and language-layout settings instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download kbdus.dll from a DLL archive
A standalone download can contain:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible servicing level
- Incorrect permissions
- A tampered or malicious file
- A file that does not match the component store
Copying kbdus.dll from another computer has the same risks and can leave the underlying Windows corruption unresolved. It can also create a new problem if a 32-bit copy is placed where a 64-bit process expects a native system file.

Use Windows Update, Windows component repair, an official matching installation source, System Restore, or Windows recovery instead.
If DISM cannot repair the file
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft’s documented pattern is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only a placeholder. The repair source must match the installed Windows version and be suitable for the installation. Do not substitute an arbitrary folder from another computer.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
Use recovery options when repairs still fail
Use deeper recovery when the problem began after a failed update, corruption repeatedly returns, or DISM and SFC cannot restore the component.
Uninstall a recent update
If the error began immediately after an update:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Review recent updates.
- Remove the relevant update only when it clearly matches the beginning of the problem.
- Restart and test.
Windows Recovery also provides update-removal options when Windows cannot start normally.
Use System Restore
System Restore can roll back system files and settings without removing personal files, but it may remove recently installed applications, drivers, updates, or settings.

Reinstall the current version of Windows
On Windows 11, some systems provide:
Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the computer connected to power.
If that option is unavailable or does not work, use official Windows installation media and back up important files first. A clean installation should be a last resort after less destructive recovery methods have been considered.

Is kbdus.dll safe?
The genuine kbdus.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component for the United States keyboard layout. A file with that name in an unusual folder, or one flagged by security software, should not automatically be trusted. Verify the Windows installation through Windows Security and component repair rather than downloading a replacement.
Does installing Visual C++ fix kbdus.dll?
Usually not. kbdus.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not a Visual C++ runtime. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application if only one program reports the error.
Does DirectX or .NET restore the file?
No general connection exists between those packages and the Windows US keyboard-layout DLL. Installing them is not the correct first repair.
Should I copy kbdus.dll from another PC?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing level, permissions, or language configuration. Use Windows component repair or a matching official repair source.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does a game or application mention kbdus.dll?
The program may be requesting a Windows keyboard-layout component while it starts, or it may have an incorrect private DLL reference. If Windows input works normally and only that program fails, repair or reinstall the program after running the Windows checks.
What if the error appears only when switching languages?
Re-add the affected keyboard layout through Windows Settings. Then run DISM and SFC if the layout cannot be added or the error continues.
Is there a different kbdus.dll for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows?
Windows can maintain architecture-specific copies. On 64-bit Windows, native files are normally in System32, while 32-bit equivalents are normally in SysWOW64. WOW64 redirection can affect what a 32-bit application sees.
What is the correct order: SFC or DISM?
Run DISM first, then run sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component source that SFC may need to restore protected files.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?
No. kbdus.dll is a keyboard-layout DLL, not a typical self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. regsvr32 is not the appropriate repair method.
