PS4 error CE-33987-0 means the console’s network connection timed out while signing in to PlayStation Network. Start with Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, then turn off the modem and router for at least five minutes before trying again. This error does not, by itself, justify initializing the PS4, deleting your account, or rebuilding its database.
What CE-33987-0 means
Sony describes CE-33987-0 as “Your network connection timed out while signing in.” It is an official PS4 network/sign-in error listed in Sony’s PS4 error-code directory.
The code identifies a sign-in timeout, not a particular failed component. The cause could be a temporary Wi-Fi problem, router behavior, an internet-service issue, unstable routing, a PlayStation Network service interruption, or a problem specific to the PS4’s network configuration. It does not prove that the console, hard drive, account, or PlayStation Network is permanently damaged.
Also, passing a general internet test does not guarantee that PlayStation Network sign-in will complete: the PS4 can reach the internet while the sign-in stage still times out.

Try Sony’s official fixes first
- Run the PS4 connection test. Open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Note whether the failure occurs while connecting to the local network, reaching the internet, or signing in to PlayStation Network.
- Power-cycle the modem and router. Turn both devices off, wait at least five minutes, turn them back on, and wait until internet service returns. Then retry PS4 sign-in.
- Check router firmware. Ask the router manufacturer or your internet service provider whether the router needs a firmware update or other maintenance.
- Try again later and escalate if necessary. Sony recommends retrying later if the error continues and contacting PlayStation Support if these steps do not resolve it.
Those are Sony’s code-specific instructions; they do not require deleting games, users, or saved data.
Use the connection-test result to narrow the cause

Safe checks beyond the official sequence
Restart the PS4 normally
Close open applications, turn the console off through the normal power menu, wait briefly, power it on, and retry sign-in. This is a low-risk supplementary step, separate from Sony’s three code-specific instructions.
Test with Ethernet
Connect the PS4 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection again. A successful wired test points toward Wi-Fi signal or router-wireless behavior; failure on both connection types suggests a broader network, service, or console-configuration issue. Ethernet is a diagnostic alternative, not a guaranteed cure.

Check whether the problem is temporary
Test another device on the same home network. If the home network works and only PSN sign-in fails, check PlayStation’s official support or service-status information before changing advanced settings. Do not label PSN “down” based on CE-33987-0 alone—the code does not establish an outage.
Consider restricted networks
Hotel, school, workplace, public, or captive-portal Wi-Fi may not support normal PS4 sign-in. A private home network or direct Ethernet test can help distinguish that situation.

Network changes to leave until last
Sony’s dedicated CE-33987-0 page does not prescribe custom DNS, port forwarding, DMZ, manual IP settings, or a specific DNS address. Such changes can introduce new problems and make the original cause harder to identify. If you nevertheless test an advanced setting, record the original configuration and change one thing at a time.
- Do not start with initialization. Factory-resetting the PS4 can remove users, settings, games, and other data while poorly matching a network sign-in timeout.
- Do not delete the user profile or reinstall games solely because this code appears.
- Do not rebuild the database first. Consider that recovery option only when separate symptoms—such as missing content, unusually slow menus, or unrelated application errors—suggest storage or database trouble. Back up important saves before any advanced recovery procedure.
Does the PS4 need a system update?
CE-33987-0 is not documented by Sony as requiring a PS4 system-software update. Sony’s dedicated guidance focuses on the connection test, modem/router reset, router firmware, retrying later, and support. Keeping system software current is sensible general maintenance, but it is not a verified primary fix for this code.

When to contact PlayStation Support or your ISP
- The error remains after the PS4 test and the five-minute modem/router power cycle.
- It repeats across multiple attempts and at different times.
- Ethernet does not help even though other devices appear online.
- You suspect an account, authentication, or service-side problem.
- The router may need firmware, routing, or ISP-level troubleshooting.
When contacting support, record the exact code, the result of Test Internet Connection, whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet was used, whether other devices worked, and what happened after the router was powered off for five minutes. That information helps separate a local connection fault from a sign-in or service problem.
