If Microsoft Solitaire Collection will not open, freezes, crashes, or will not install on Windows 11, start by restarting Windows and updating the game. Then try Repair before Reset; reset the Microsoft Store cache or reinstall Solitaire only if those steps fail. Reset can remove locally stored app data, so confirm which Microsoft account you use before doing it. These fixes follow Microsoft’s guidance for Store apps.
Identify what is failing
The right fix depends on whether the problem is Solitaire itself, the Store, or an online feature. Start with the closest match:
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens when you launch Solitaire, or it closes immediately | Restart Windows, update the game, then Repair the app. |
| It freezes on the splash screen or while loading | Update Windows and Solitaire, then Repair. If the problem continues, consider Reset. |
| The Store cannot install or update Solitaire | Restart after any Windows updates, run wsreset.exe, and retry from the Store Library. |
| The Store itself will not open or is missing | Search for it from Start, try wsreset.exe, and check account or device restrictions. |
| The game opens, but sign-in or online features fail | Check the Microsoft account, internet connection, and Windows time and region settings before reinstalling. |
If the failure began after a Windows update, restart first; a pending restart can interfere with app installation. If other Store apps fail too, investigate the Store, account, network, or device rather than treating this as a Solitaire-only problem.
Check that Solitaire is installed, then restart Windows
- Open Start and search for Microsoft Solitaire Collection. If it appears, try launching it once.
- To check whether it is installed, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Solitaire. Windows 11 wording may vary slightly by version.
- Close the game. If it is frozen, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select the Microsoft Solitaire Collection process if it is still running, and choose End task.
- Restart Windows, then try the game again.
If Solitaire is absent, look for its official listing in Microsoft Store. An app might not appear because of region, device compatibility, family settings, account authorization, or a recent update that still needs a restart. See Microsoft’s guidance on apps that cannot be found or installed.

Install Windows and Store updates
Check Windows Update
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install available updates and restart if Windows asks. Microsoft recommends checking for Windows updates as part of resolving Store-app problems.
Check for Solitaire updates
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Select Library > Get updates.
- Let any Solitaire update finish before launching the game again.
Store apps generally update automatically, but the Library offers a manual check. Microsoft’s instructions are at Get updates for apps and games in Microsoft Store.
Repair Solitaire without resetting its data
Repair is the next low-disruption step: it is intended to address app problems without immediately clearing the app’s stored state.

Reset Solitaire only if Repair does not work
Reset is different from Repair: it can remove Solitaire’s locally stored data and settings. Before continuing, make sure you know the Microsoft account used in the game. Account-synchronized progress may be available after signing back in, but data stored only on the device may not be recoverable.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Solitaire Collection > three-dot menu > Advanced options.
- Select Reset and confirm.
- Open Solitaire again and sign in with the Microsoft account you used previously if prompted.
Microsoft presents Reset as a follow-up when Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful; see its Windows repair and reset instructions.

Clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
Use this step when Store downloads or updates fail, or when Microsoft Store will not open. It resets the Store cache; it is not a Windows reset.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window runs. Microsoft says the Store should open automatically after roughly ten seconds.
- In Microsoft Store, retry the Solitaire update or installation from Library.
Microsoft documents this command for Store installation problems and Store launch failures: apps you cannot find or install and Microsoft Store that does not open.

- Search Start: type Microsoft Store in Start instead of relying on a pinned taskbar icon.
- Try the cache reset: run
wsreset.exeas described above, then restart and check again. - Check Windows updates and date settings: install pending updates and verify the date, time, time zone, region, and location settings. Microsoft includes time and location checks in its Store troubleshooting guidance, including Store error 0x80131500 troubleshooting.
- Check the account: Store availability may differ when Windows is using a local account. Signing in to Store with the intended Microsoft account is not the same as changing the account used to sign in to Windows.
- Check device management: work or school administrators can disable Store access. Ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass a restriction.
Microsoft describes local-account and managed-device limitations at Can’t find the Microsoft Store app. Store availability can also vary by region; changing the device region is not a general fix and can affect Store content.
If Solitaire launches but online features do not
A game that opens but cannot sign in, sync, or load an online feature has a different symptom from an app that will not launch. Check the connection and make sure Solitaire and Microsoft Store are using the Microsoft account associated with your existing progress. Verify Windows date, time, time zone, and region settings, then try another network if Store or game services cannot connect.

If other Store apps also cannot sign in, focus on the account, network, or Store connection. Avoid creating a new Microsoft account as a first step: it may not contain the account-linked progress you are trying to access. Reinstalling will not by itself resolve a network or authentication problem.
When to escalate
If only Solitaire is affected, the steps above are more proportionate than a broad Windows recovery. If several Store apps fail, Store is blocked, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or the app remains unavailable after reinstalling, contact Microsoft Support or the administrator responsible for the device. Microsoft’s installation and removal troubleshooting guidance addresses broader installation problems; resetting Windows is a system-level recovery option, not a normal first-line Solitaire fix.
Avoid registry cleaners, random DLL downloads, unofficial Solitaire installers, and paid “PC repair” utilities for this problem. They are not needed for the documented Store-app recovery steps and can add security, privacy, or compatibility risks.
