Premiere coverage named Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant as the first Traitors; episode-two reporting says they recruited James Acaster and murdered Amol Rajan. The reports reviewed do not establish an early betrayal between Traitors.
What happened in the first two episodes?
The series premiered on October 1, 2026, with 21 celebrity players, according to Goss.ie’s premiere report. Claudia Winkleman chose Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant as the initial Traitors. Rather than beginning with the three viewers had seen in the previous season, the game opened with two.
The pair were then allowed to put forward two candidates who would plead to join them. One would be recruited as a Traitor; the other would be murdered. Their choices were James Acaster and Amol Rajan. The Standard’s episode-two report says Acaster joined the Traitors and Rajan was murdered.
Was one Traitor betrayed by another?
Not in the events established by these reports. The twist put Acaster and Rajan in competition for a place beside Jama and Grant, but the coverage does not describe Jama or Grant betraying the other. Calling it an early Traitor-on-Traitor betrayal would go beyond what the reported episode events show.

Grant did tell Joe Lycett, “I am a traitor,” before later appearing to backtrack, as The Standard’s premiere coverage recounts. That is a reported in-game disclosure and reversal, not evidence in that report of one Traitor turning against another.
Why did the recruitment twist surprise viewers?
The initial two-person team differed from the three Traitors viewers had seen in the previous season, prompting posts asking, “Only two Traitors?” and “Am I missing something or did we only see two people picked for Traitors?” Goss.ie also reported social-media discussion about whether Acaster would be killed and the risk to Grant if Rajan died.

Acaster’s recruitment made the choice more uncomfortable: The Standard reported him saying, “I can’t believe I’m a Traitor, I’m gutted to not be Faithful anymore, I don’t like lying, but if I don’t join, then they kill me.” The outlet also quoted a viewer saying, “I really feel for James Acaster, he wanted so badly to be a faithful and have fun being a detective”. These are selected fan posts, not a measurement of how the audience as a whole reacted.

After a mission, Jerry Hall and Hannah Fry were vulnerable to murder. The episode’s round table ended on a cliffhanger, with the banishment result still unresolved in The Standard’s account. That coverage does not establish who was banished, so the episode should not be described as having resolved the vote.

Goss.ie reported that contestants were playing for up to £100,000 for their chosen charities. That figure is a stated maximum, not a confirmed payout.
