Reports say a Russian Mi-8 helicopter was lost in Voronezh Oblast on October 1, 2026, and three crew members were killed. But the reported friendly-fire cause remains unconfirmed: The Kyiv Independent said the details had not been independently verified and Russian authorities had not publicly confirmed a shootdown. The £11 million figure in the headline is also an unsubstantiated valuation, not an established aircraft price.
What reportedly happened in Voronezh Oblast
The Kyiv Independent reported on October 2 that an Mi-8 was lost about 80 kilometres from Voronezh on October 1. It attributed the incident details to reports circulating through Russian sources and explicitly said they had not been independently verified. Was the helicopter brought down by friendly fire?
Friendly fire is an allegation, not a confirmed cause. Early accounts described Russian air defence as responsible; later claims named a Russian Su-35 crew that allegedly mistook the Mi-8 for a Ukrainian drone. The Insider attributed the Su-35 account to Russian pro-war Telegram channels, including Fighterbomber. What kind of helicopter is the Mi-8?
The Mi-8 is a Soviet-designed, twin-engine helicopter used for transport, combat support and humanitarian missions. Its broad range of roles helps explain why an Mi-8 could be operating in a military context, but it does not establish what this particular helicopter was doing when it was lost. Mi-8 background
Is the helicopter really worth £11 million?
That price is not substantiated by an authoritative valuation in the reviewed coverage. Brit Brief reported an £11 million figure, but did not provide a valuation method or identify the aircraft’s variant, condition or another basis for the amount.
