AMD’s January 6, 2025 CES announcements added gaming-focused Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs, Ryzen Z2 handheld processors and new Ryzen AI laptop chips. The Radeon RX 9070 was not formally launched at CES: AMD unveiled the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT on February 28, with board-partner availability announced for March 6.
What AMD announced at CES 2025
AMD’s January announcements broadened several product families rather than introducing every family from scratch. The original Ryzen 9000 desktop processors and first Ryzen AI 300 models had been announced in June 2024; CES added models and device categories. The RX 9070 came later.

Ryzen 9000: CES added X3D desktop chips, not the original lineup
AMD’s first Ryzen 9000 desktop lineup was announced in June 2024 and began reaching DIY customers and system integrators in July. It uses Zen 5 and the AM5 platform, with DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0. AMD said in June 2024 that it planned to support AM5 through 2027 and beyond; that is the company’s platform commitment, not a guarantee that every future processor will work in every existing motherboard.

AMD’s June 2024 announcement claimed an average 16% IPC improvement over Zen 4. That is AMD’s stated result, not a promise of the same uplift in every game or application. AMD’s original Ryzen 9000 announcement has the launch details.
What the 9950X3D and 9900X3D add
The CES desktop additions were the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D. Both combine Zen 5 with second-generation 3D V-Cache, which increases on-package cache. AMD positioned them for high-end gaming as well as content creation; its “world’s best” language is a company claim, not an independently established result in every workload.
More cache can help some games, but it does not make an X3D processor automatically faster in every task. Results depend on the game or application, graphics card, resolution, memory, firmware and operating-system scheduling. For a gaming-focused build, weigh the X3D model’s price against a lower-core option; for sustained all-core work, compare actual application performance with a conventional Ryzen 9. A build also needs a compatible AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory, suitable cooling and, for serious gaming, generally a discrete graphics card.

Ryzen Z2: three handheld chips, not one shared design
The Ryzen Z2 family targets handheld gaming PCs, where battery capacity, cooling and configurable power shape performance as much as the processor name. AMD’s CES announcement included Z2 Extreme, Z2 and Z2 Go, but the family does not use one uniform CPU and GPU architecture.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The standard Ryzen Z2 is an eight-core Zen 4 processor with RDNA 3 graphics and 12 compute units. AMD lists a 28 W default TDP and a configurable range of 15–30 W. Those figures describe the chip; the handheld maker’s sustained power settings, cooling and memory configuration affect what a device delivers. The Z2 Extreme uses up to eight Zen 5 cores and RDNA 3.5 graphics, according to AMD’s CES announcement. Do not apply that specification to the standard Z2 or Z2 Go.
When comparing handhelds, check the exact Z2 model, sustained wattage, memory bandwidth and capacity, screen resolution, battery size, cooling and fan noise, operating-system support and compatibility with the games you play. A product listing that says only “Ryzen Z2” does not establish the performance of a Z2 Extreme system. AMD’s standard Z2 specification page lists its Zen 4 and RDNA 3 details.

Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI Max broadened AMD’s laptop range
Ryzen AI 300 was already a product family before CES: AMD had announced Ryzen AI 300 models in June 2024. At CES, it expanded the range with Ryzen AI 7 and AI 5 chips, introduced Ryzen AI Max and AI Max PRO, and announced Ryzen 200 and Ryzen 200 PRO. Ryzen 9000HX, by contrast, is AMD’s gaming-laptop processor family. The shared Ryzen name does not make desktop CPUs, gaming laptop chips, AI laptops and handheld processors interchangeable; they are designed for different power, cooling, memory and graphics constraints.
| CES Ryzen AI 300 model | CPU cores / threads | Maximum boost | Integrated graphics | Configurable TDP | NPU capability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen AI 7 350 | 8 / 16 | Up to 5.0 GHz | Radeon 860M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 340 | 6 / 12 | Up to 4.8 GHz | Radeon 840M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 | 8 / 16 | Up to 5.0 GHz | Radeon 860M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340 | 6 / 12 | Up to 4.8 GHz | Radeon 840M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
The 50 TOPS figure refers to NPU capability, not overall application speed, battery life or total system performance. Ryzen AI Max is aimed at premium mobile PCs, creator laptops and thin workstations, with Zen 5 CPU cores, integrated Radeon graphics and an NPU rated up to 50 TOPS in AMD’s announcement. PRO versions add business-oriented security and manageability features. AMD named OEM systems from Dell, ASUS, HP, Lenovo and MSI across its CES AI portfolio; a chip announcement does not mean every configuration shipped on the same schedule.

For a laptop purchase, compare the exact processor and the system around it: manufacturer power limits, cooling, memory capacity and whether it is soldered, integrated-GPU power allocation, display, battery and any discrete GPU. Two laptops with the same Ryzen AI chip can behave differently because OEM design and tuning differ. AMD’s CES AI announcement lists the expanded models and its stated specifications.

Radeon RX 9070 was a later RDNA 4 launch
AMD formally unveiled RDNA 4 and the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT on February 28, 2025, seven weeks after the CES announcements. The company announced board-partner availability beginning March 6. The prices below are AMD’s US launch suggested retail prices, not guaranteed current or region-specific retail prices.
| Specification | Radeon RX 9070 XT | Radeon RX 9070 |
|---|---|---|
| Compute units | 64 | 56 |
| Memory | 16 GB GDDR6 | 16 GB GDDR6 |
| Game clock | 2.4 GHz | 2.1 GHz |
| Boost clock | Up to 3.0 GHz | Up to 2.5 GHz |
| Memory bus | 256-bit | 256-bit |
| Infinity Cache | 64 MB | 64 MB |
| Board power | 304 W | 220 W |
| US launch SEP | $599 | $549 |
Those official figures do not establish which board-partner card best fits a particular case or power supply. Before buying, check the specific card’s dimensions, cooler, connectors and power-supply guidance, and compare its actual price with alternatives. Ray-tracing performance and the games you play also matter; an FSR feature alone does not determine a GPU’s value. AMD’s RDNA 4 announcement gives the launch specifications and availability statement.
FSR 4: AMD’s machine-learning upscaling for RDNA 4
AMD described FSR 4 as machine-learning-based upscaling associated with the RX 9000 series, using RDNA 4 hardware features including FP8 WMMA. At launch, AMD said more than 30 games supported the technology and that 75 were expected later in 2025. Those are AMD’s launch claims; support depends on the game’s implementation and driver version. AMD also described an upgrade path for supported games that already integrated FSR 3.1. Check the specific game and current driver support rather than assuming every FSR-capable title offers FSR 4.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to read the CES announcements as a buyer
- Building a desktop: Decide whether gaming, rendering or mixed work is the priority; then compare X3D and conventional Ryzen 9000 options alongside motherboard, DDR5, cooling and graphics-card costs.
- Choosing a laptop: Shop by complete laptop model and configuration, not just the Ryzen family label. Power limits, cooling, memory and display can change the experience materially.
- Choosing a handheld: Confirm whether it uses Z2, Z2 Extreme or Z2 Go, then compare sustained wattage, battery, screen and memory rather than assuming the chips are equivalent.
- Considering an RX 9070: Treat the $549 and $599 figures as historical US launch SEPs. Check current local pricing, card dimensions, power requirements and support for features in the games you play.
CES 2025 was a broad expansion of AMD’s Ryzen gaming, handheld and AI PC portfolios. The RX 9070 belongs in the wider 2025 AMD product story, but its formal launch was in February, not at CES.
