AMD’s CES 2025 Ryzen AI Max chips make integrated graphics far more credible for serious gaming. The flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395 combines 16 Zen 5 CPU cores with Radeon 8060S graphics and a 50-TOPS NPU. The clearest gaming showcase is ASUS’s 2025 ROG Flow Z13, a detachable 2-in-1 that delivers unusual graphics power in a tablet-sized design—but it is not automatically a replacement for a larger laptop with a discrete Nvidia GPU.
What AMD announced at CES 2025
On January 6, 2025, AMD announced the consumer Ryzen AI Max and commercial Ryzen AI Max PRO processor families. AMD said systems would begin arriving during the first quarter of 2025, with availability depending on the manufacturer, region, configuration, and retailer.
The chips target premium thin-and-light PCs, creators, demanding multitasking, and AI workloads. For gamers, the important change is the size of the integrated Radeon GPU: this is not the modest graphics hardware normally associated with an office ultrabook.
AMD’s announcement positions the platform as a way to deliver high CPU and GPU performance without requiring a separate graphics chip.

The ROG Flow Z13 is also available with the 12-core, 24-thread Ryzen AI Max 390, which ASUS pairs with Radeon 8050S graphics in its specification comparison.
The processor’s power rating matters. A Ryzen AI Max+ 395 running at a high limit in a well-cooled laptop will not behave like the same chip configured for a thin, quiet design. Buyers should compare the complete laptop—not just the processor name.
Why the integrated Radeon GPU is different
Ryzen AI Max uses an APU-style design: the CPU, GPU, and NPU are combined in one processor package. The Radeon graphics share system memory with the CPU through a unified-memory design.
That arrangement can save motherboard space and avoid the extra cooling and power demands of a separate graphics chip. It also lets the GPU access a large memory pool. ASUS lists up to 128GB of LPDDR5X memory on certain Flow Z13 configurations.

However, shared memory is not the same as dedicated VRAM. A 64GB or 128GB laptop does not have a graphics card with 64GB or 128GB of dedicated video memory. Available capacity, memory bandwidth, firmware allocation, drivers, and the laptop’s power limit all influence gaming performance.
ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is the main gaming showcase
The product most closely associated with AMD’s CES gaming story is the 2025 ASUS ROG Flow Z13. It is best described as a detachable gaming tablet or 2-in-1 rather than a conventional clamshell laptop.
- 13.4-inch 2560×1600 touchscreen
- 180Hz refresh rate
- Up to Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with Radeon 8060S graphics
- Up to 128GB of LPDDR5X shared memory, depending on configuration
- 70Wh battery
- USB4-capable USB-C ports, HDMI 2.1, USB-A, microSD, and 3.5mm audio
- Approximately 2.65 pounds without the keyboard and 3.51 pounds with it
- 200W power adapter on listed configurations
The detachable design is the point. The Z13 is much easier to carry than a conventional high-performance gaming laptop and can function as a tablet, but it still has to cool a high-core-count processor and a large integrated GPU in a compact chassis.
How does Radeon 8060S compare with a discrete GPU?
AMD says the Radeon 8060S in the Flow Z13 delivered a 14% average performance advantage over the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in the previous-generation ROG Flow Z13 in AMD’s testing. That is a vendor comparison, not a universal benchmark result.

AMD also published selected 1080p, high-quality game comparisons using a 55W Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system against an Intel Core Ultra 9 288V system. Those results do not establish that every Radeon 8060S laptop will outperform every RTX 4070 or newer discrete GPU laptop. Laptop GPU performance varies substantially with power limits, cooling, memory configuration, drivers, and chassis design.
The accurate conclusion is that AMD’s large integrated GPU can reach the performance range of some discrete laptop GPUs in selected workloads. It should not be described as a fixed equivalent to an RTX 4070, RTX 5070, or any other GPU tier.
| Ryzen AI Max system | Traditional discrete-GPU laptop | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU location | Integrated into the processor | Separate graphics processor |

| Best fit | Portable mixed gaming, creation, and AI workloads | Maximum sustained gaming and dedicated-VRAM workloads |
The trade-offs for gamers
Performance depends on the whole system
The Flow Z13’s Radeon graphics are powerful for integrated hardware, but performance depends on the configured power limit and cooling system. A compact tablet may become hot or noisy under sustained gaming, especially when both the CPU and GPU are heavily loaded.
Native 1600p gaming may require compromises
The Z13’s 2560×1600 display is sharp and fast, but demanding games may require 1080p rendering, reduced settings, or upscaling to maintain high frame rates. A 180Hz panel does not mean every modern AAA game will run at 180 frames per second.

Ray tracing and Nvidia-specific workloads remain considerations
A large integrated Radeon GPU does not automatically make the Z13 the best choice for ray-traced games, CUDA-dependent software, or creator applications optimized around Nvidia hardware. Buyers who prioritize those workloads should compare the exact discrete GPU laptop they are considering.
Memory is generally fixed
On the Flow Z13 configurations described by ASUS, LPDDR5X memory is integrated and should be treated as non-upgradable. Choosing 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB is therefore a purchase-time decision. More memory can help shared-memory workloads, but it does not turn the system into a discrete GPU with equivalent dedicated VRAM.
The price is not budget-friendly
US launch configurations were listed at roughly $2,100 to $2,800, while later official ASUS listings included higher-memory and special-edition configurations costing as much as $3,699.99. Prices vary by memory, storage, operating-system edition, region, and stock, so buyers should verify the exact SKU on the official buying page.

What to check before buying
- Identify the exact Ryzen AI Max model.
- Check the laptop’s configured power limit, not just AMD’s headline range.
- Confirm memory capacity, speed, and whether it is upgradeable.
- Check how much shared memory the firmware makes available to graphics.
- Compare the display resolution with the games you intend to play.
- Review cooling design, fan behavior, and sustained-performance testing where available.
- Check battery capacity and remember that maximum gaming performance normally requires AC power.
- Verify USB4, external-display, and external-GPU support if those features matter.
- Compare the exact retail price with conventional RTX-equipped alternatives.
- Check the warranty and return policy before buying an expensive, non-upgradable configuration.
Verdict
Ryzen AI Max did not eliminate the need for discrete gaming GPUs, but it made the high-performance integrated-gaming laptop substantially more credible. The 2025 ROG Flow Z13 shows what that matters for: a genuinely portable detachable gaming system with a powerful CPU, unusually large Radeon graphics, and generous shared memory.
It is a specialist product rather than a universal gaming-laptop recommendation. Choose it for portability, the tablet form factor, and mixed gaming and productivity workloads. Choose a conventional Nvidia-equipped laptop if your priority is maximum sustained gaming performance, ray tracing, dedicated VRAM, or value at a given frame-rate target.
