Internet Stability Tips to Reduce Lag: Home Network Optimization for Smoother Gaming and Video Calls

Stable gaming and video calls depend on latency, jitter, packet loss, and congestion—not just download speed. Use this fault-isolation guide to find and fix the real cause.

The fastest way to reduce lag is not automatically buying a faster internet plan or a “gaming router.” First measure latency at rest and under load, then use Ethernet where possible, stop competing uploads and downloads, configure SQM or suitable QoS, improve Wi-Fi placement, and only replace hardware after you identify the failing part of the network.

Gaming and video calls depend on consistent latency, jitter, and packet loss. A connection can deliver hundreds of megabits per second and still feel terrible when a cloud backup, game update, or stream fills the router’s queues.

What “lag” actually means

Lag is an umbrella term for several different problems:

  • Latency or ping: How long data takes to travel to a destination and back.
  • Jitter: Variation in latency from one packet to the next. High jitter causes uneven movement, robotic audio, and inconsistent inputs.
  • Packet loss: Data that fails to arrive and must be resent, or is discarded entirely.
  • Throughput: The amount of data transferred per second. Speed tests primarily measure this.
  • Bufferbloat: Excessive queueing delay when a connection is busy.
  • Wi-Fi interference: Competing networks, household devices, obstacles, weak signal, or roaming between access points.

Input lag, low frame rates, display delay, and cloud-gaming latency can also feel like network lag. A speed test cannot distinguish all of these causes, and a low ping to one test server does not guarantee a low ping to a particular game server or meeting region.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Start with a baseline instead of changing settings at random

Record the device, connection type, router and modem models, ISP, advertised speed, time of day, active devices, and whether anyone is streaming, downloading, uploading, or backing up files. Microsoft recommends testing in multiple locations before and after changes rather than relying on one speed test. Its Wi-Fi guidance is here.

Run these tests separately:

  1. Idle: Pause streaming, downloads, backups, and large uploads.
  2. Download-loaded: Start a large download or download-heavy speed test.
  3. Upload-loaded: Upload a large file or run an upload-heavy test.
  4. Real-world: Play a game or join a call while another device generates traffic.
  5. Wired versus wireless: Repeat the test over Ethernet if practical.
  6. Near-router versus normal room: Compare the same device in both locations.

The key question is: does latency remain stable when the connection is busy? If idle ping is acceptable but rises sharply during downloads or uploads, congestion or bufferbloat is more likely than insufficient raw speed.

Use Ethernet for the most important devices

Connect desktop gaming PCs, consoles, work laptops used for critical calls, mesh nodes, and devices that generate sustained traffic by Ethernet whenever possible. Ethernet avoids many wireless variables, including radio interference, weak signal, channel contention, and roaming. It usually provides a more predictable local link, but it cannot fix a distant game server, bad ISP routing, or a failing modem.

Check the cable, switch, and ports if wired performance is poor. An old or damaged cable, defective adapter, or powerline network can be the problem. Ethernet over powerline varies with household wiring and electrical noise. Where coaxial cabling is available, MoCA can be a useful alternative, although adapters, splitters, and the home’s coax layout affect results.

Stop competing traffic, especially uploads

Look for cloud photo synchronization, OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, NAS backups, security-camera uploads, VPN transfers, torrents, game updates, operating-system updates, screen sharing, and simultaneous video calls.

Upload congestion deserves particular attention. A relatively modest upstream connection can fill its queue and disrupt both games and calls. Schedule backups outside gaming or work hours, pause game downloads, limit backup upload rates, and use router device limits where available. A separate SSID usually does not create bandwidth priority by itself.

Some systems offer preferred-activity controls. For example, Google Nest Wifi supports preferred activities for video conferencing. Treat such controls as something to test, not as a guaranteed bandwidth reservation.

Fix bufferbloat with SQM or QoS

If latency spikes while someone downloads or uploads, look in the router for Smart Queue Management (SQM), Cake, FQ-CoDel, anti-bufferbloat, traffic shaping, or an option such as “optimize for conferencing and gaming.”

These labels are not interchangeable:

  • Generic QoS may prioritize a device, application, port, or traffic category.
  • SQM actively manages queues and shapes traffic to control delay under load.
  • Anti-bufferbloat is often a vendor’s name for traffic shaping or a related implementation.

NETGEAR describes bufferbloat’s effect on gaming and voice/video applications, while eero describes SQM’s queue-shaping role.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

How to configure SQM

  1. Measure the connection’s real sustained download and upload rates.
  2. Enable SQM or anti-bufferbloat.
  3. Set shaping rates slightly below the measured maximum.
  4. Test separately under download and upload load.
  5. Lower the shaping rate if latency still spikes.
  6. Raise it gradually if latency is stable but throughput is unnecessarily reduced.

There is no universal percentage that works for every connection. The best setting depends on ISP technology, upload and download direction, router CPU capacity, PPPoE or VLAN overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, and whether the service rate changes over time.

The trade-off is real: shaping can reduce peak throughput in exchange for responsiveness. NETGEAR notes that QoS can reduce total available bandwidth. A correctly configured SQM system can substantially reduce queueing delay, but it cannot repair ISP-side packet loss, a distant server, Wi-Fi interference, a defective modem, or display and input lag.

Test QoS off, automatic mode, device-priority mode, application-priority mode, and SQM where available. Keep the setting that produces the best loaded-latency result, not the one with the most gaming-focused name. Vendor QoS implementations vary and may behave as best effort rather than guaranteed reservation. NETGEAR’s general QoS explanation covers this limitation.

Improve router placement and Wi-Fi coverage

  • Place the main router centrally, elevated, and in the open.
  • Avoid cabinets, floors, dense furniture, metal objects, televisions, and large appliances.
  • Do not hide the router in a media console or basement corner.
  • Place mesh nodes within strong range of the previous node, not inside the dead zone they are meant to fix.
  • Prefer Ethernet backhaul for mesh nodes.
  • Avoid stacking several wireless extenders, which can add hops and reduce capacity.

Move one variable at a time, then repeat the same idle and loaded tests. Better coverage does not necessarily mean lower latency if the new link uses a weak wireless backhaul.

Choose the right Wi-Fi band

Band Best use Important limitation
2.4 GHz Longer range, walls, older devices, low-bandwidth smart-home equipment More congestion, fewer practical channels, and more interference
5 GHz Gaming, calls, streaming, and modern devices near or moderately close to the router Shorter range and greater attenuation through walls
6 GHz Compatible Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 clients at short range Shorter reach, poorer wall penetration, and compatibility requirements

Microsoft describes 5 GHz as generally better suited to gaming and streaming, while 6 GHz can offer lower congestion at short range. See Microsoft’s band and layout guidance.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If your router exposes separate network names, temporarily give 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz distinct SSIDs. Connect the gaming or calling device deliberately to each band and compare latency and packet loss. Re-enable band steering later if it behaves reliably. A client may otherwise select a distant access point or undesirable band.

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are not automatic latency cures. A well-placed Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 access point can outperform a newer router behind several walls.

Update firmware and drivers

Update router and mesh-node firmware, modem or gateway firmware where user-controlled, Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapter drivers, console software, and the operating system. Microsoft recommends current router firmware and network-adapter drivers for call-quality troubleshooting.

Before updating, photograph or export router settings. If the network behaves abnormally afterward, reboot the modem, router, mesh nodes, and client in that order. Factory-reset only after recording ISP credentials and custom settings. Confirm that an update did not reset QoS, bridge mode, DNS, port forwarding, or IPv6 settings.

Ping and traceroute are clues, not conclusive proof of intermittent loss. Some routers and hosts deprioritize diagnostic traffic. Teams’ quality guidance considers latency, jitter, packet loss, and stream direction when investigating calls; Microsoft’s review guide explains those measurements. DNS changes may speed up name resolution but generally do not reduce latency after an established game session begins.

Gaming-specific fixes

  • Use Ethernet for consoles and desktop PCs where possible.
  • Choose the nearest in-game server or region.
  • Pause downloads, updates, and cloud synchronization.
  • Prevent another device from saturating the upload.
  • Avoid VPNs unless testing demonstrates that one improves a specific routing problem.
  • Check console NAT status, but do not add port forwarding unless the game requires it and you understand the security implications.
  • Use UPnP cautiously; it simplifies automatic port opening but expands what devices can request.
  • Compare in-game latency with router and public-IP tests at different times.

If ping is stable but movement still feels delayed, check frame rate, shader compilation, thermal throttling, controller latency, and display settings. A “gaming port” or dashboard may provide prioritization, but its usefulness depends on whether congestion is the actual bottleneck and how the router manages queues. ASUS lists examples of gaming-oriented QoS and port features; those features are not proof of lower real-world latency.

Video-call-specific fixes

  • Use Ethernet for the primary calling computer.
  • On Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point and prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz when appropriate.
  • Pause cloud backups and large uploads.
  • Disable unnecessary VPN routing or use permitted split tunneling.
  • Update camera, audio, USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet drivers.
  • Reduce video resolution or disable HD video if the connection is unstable.
  • Disable background blur and virtual effects if the computer itself is overloaded.
  • Check whether the problem affects outgoing video, incoming video, or both.
  • Test another device or participant; the other endpoint may be responsible.

Robotic audio, frozen remote video, and failures during screen sharing commonly point toward packet loss, jitter, or upload congestion. A frozen local camera preview may instead indicate CPU, GPU, USB, or driver trouble. Microsoft’s Teams guidance covers Wi-Fi analysis, band selection, and software updates.

Should you buy a new router?

Buy or replace hardware only after testing the fault domain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new router may be justified when:

  • The current router lacks SQM or usable QoS.
  • It cannot shape traffic at your internet speed.
  • Firmware is obsolete or no longer maintained.
  • Coverage is inadequate for the home layout.
  • It is unstable under concurrent traffic or lacks required Ethernet ports.
  • It cannot support the necessary bridge or access-point topology.

Do not buy one first when:

  • Ethernet is already unstable.
  • The modem or ISP gateway may be failing.
  • Only one game has the problem.
  • The server is geographically distant or the route is poor.
  • One cloud backup or camera upload causes the symptoms.
  • Only one computer or adapter is affected.

A single router is usually simpler and can have lower local latency when it covers the home. Mesh makes sense for large or obstructed homes, but wireless backhaul can add contention and hops. Prefer mesh systems with Ethernet backhaul, bridge/access-point support, usable traffic controls, wired ports on nodes, and a clear firmware policy.

Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz can help households with compatible clients, short-range coverage needs, and substantial congestion. They are poor value when the primary issue is ISP congestion, upload saturation, a distant server, or bad placement. Vendor specifications such as those for the TP-Link Archer BE550 Pro describe product capabilities, not guaranteed ping improvements.
