chakra.dll Won’t Start: Find the Broken Windows Component

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If chakra.dll is missing, not found, or will not load, first identify whether Windows or an older application is calling it. chakra.dll is Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine component associated with legacy Microsoft Edge and Windows browser components.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing files, write down:

  • The exact program, game, or Windows process named in the error
  • Whether the error appears at startup, when opening one application, or during every boot
  • The full error text
  • The application’s installation path
  • Whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Your Windows version and build from winver
  • Whether the issue began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, disk cleanup, Internet Explorer changes, malware removal, or an interrupted upgrade

Do not download a replacement copy of chakra.dll yet. A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of the DLL is missing, not that chakra.dll itself is absent.

What chakra.dll belongs to

chakra.dll is a Windows component containing the Chakra JavaScript engine used by Microsoft Edge Legacy and the Edge JavaScript Runtime APIs. It is different from jscript9.dll, which belongs to Internet Explorer’s separate Chakra-based implementation. Microsoft describes this split in its Chakra scripting documentation.

This distinction matters because reinstalling current Microsoft Edge does not automatically restore an old Chakra component. Current Chromium-based Edge uses a different JavaScript engine.

ChakraCore is the open-source, embeddable form of the engine. Applications built for ChakraCore generally deploy their own ChakraCore.dll; it is not a drop-in replacement for the Windows chakra.dll.

Depending on the Windows build and the program making the call, the file may be associated with the operating system or with an older Edge-dependent application. Treat the error context, not just the filename, as the starting point.

Where chakra.dll should be located

On affected Windows 10 installations, common locations are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 64-bit Windows: C:WindowsSystem32chakra.dll for the 64-bit copy
  • 64-bit Windows: C:WindowsSysWOW64chakra.dll for the 32-bit copy, where present
  • 32-bit Windows: C:WindowsSystem32chakra.dll

Windows uses a confusing naming convention: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

Do not judge a file only by its name. Check its location, Microsoft digital signature, version, and the executable that requested it. A historical catalogue may show a 32-bit version such as 11.0.15063.608, but catalogue size and version records are not a universal replacement specification. Installed files vary by Windows build.

Fix 1: Repair the application that fails

Use this first when only one application or game reports the error and Windows otherwise works normally.

Repair an installed desktop application

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Launch the program again.

If there is no Repair button, open the application’s own installer from its official installation source and choose Repair, Modify, or ** reinstall** as offered. Back up application settings or saved data first if the program stores them locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files. This restores the files expected by that particular game instead of mixing a Windows DLL into its folder.

Reinstall the affected program

If repair does not work:

  1. Uninstall the program from Settings → Apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the latest installer from the application developer’s official site or use the program’s trusted launcher.
  4. Install it again.
  5. Start the application before adding old plugins, modifications, or copied files.

If the error names a DLL inside the program’s own folder, reinstalling that application is the definitive repair. Do not copy C:WindowsSystem32chakra.dll into the application directory unless the developer explicitly documents that deployment method.

Fix 2: Repair Windows component files

Use this when the error names C:WindowsSystem32chakra.dll, appears during startup, affects multiple programs, or began after an update, cleanup operation, malware removal, or interrupted upgrade.

First save your work and close open applications. Then:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It may pause for a while.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Try the failing program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store. Microsoft documents both procedures in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.

If SFC says it found corruption it could not repair, run DISM first if you did not already do so, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot find source files, Windows may need a matching installation source. The source must match the operating-system version rather than being an arbitrary Windows image.

Manually hunting through system folders, comparing builds, and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and shows what its free scan finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns an app-local copy.

Fix 3: Install Windows updates

A damaged or outdated Windows servicing stack can leave system components incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart when prompted.
  7. Check again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
  8. Repeat the DISM and SFC repair after updating if the error remains.

If Windows Update itself reports corruption, use Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance.

Windows 10 version 1703 and other obsolete builds are no longer suitable foundations for preserving an old system DLL indefinitely. If the affected machine is still on an unsupported build, plan a supported Windows upgrade after protecting your files.

Fix 4: Restore the Internet Explorer feature on older Windows 10 systems

This is not a universal chakra.dll fix. It is relevant when the problem began after Windows browser features were disabled or partially removed on an older Windows 10 installation.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find Internet Explorer 11.
  3. Select its checkbox.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run DISM and SFC if the feature cannot be enabled or the error continues.

You can also open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, and select Internet Explorer 11 there. Microsoft explains the feature path and Internet Explorer’s retirement in its Windows 10 Internet Explorer guidance.

Do not enable Internet Explorer merely to browse the web. This step is for repairing an older Windows component or supporting software that still depends on the legacy browser stack.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and security history

If the file disappeared suddenly, your security software may have quarantined it.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry naming chakra.dll.
  5. Check the detected file path and reason.
  6. Restore it only if it is in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
  7. Run a full scan.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Run DISM and SFC.

Do not whitelist a random replacement simply because its filename matches. If malware removal preceded the error, assume the system may have additional damaged files and complete the scan and Windows repair sequence.

Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies

A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit dependency chain. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit chain. On 64-bit Windows, that usually means checking whether the program is calling the copy associated with System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To identify the program:

  1. Right-click its shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Note the Target path.
  4. Open that installation folder.
  5. Check whether the program has its own chakra.dll.
  6. Check the file’s Properties → Digital Signatures and Details tabs.
  7. Compare the file location and architecture with the program that fails.

A file can exist and still fail because:

  • A dependent DLL is missing
  • The file is corrupted
  • The file belongs to another Windows build
  • The application is the wrong architecture
  • A required application runtime is damaged
  • Malware altered the load chain

Installing Visual C++ Redistributables is not a verified direct repair for the Windows Chakra component. Install or repair a Visual C++ runtime only when the affected application specifically reports a Visual C++ runtime error.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics or storage driver is not a normal source of chakra.dll errors, but update failures, disk problems, and display crashes can make an older application fail at the same time. Do not replace drivers blindly.

To check drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the reported problem, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer identifies a compatible update.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

If a driver update caused the issue, use Properties → Roll Back Driver, when available, rather than installing an unrelated package.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale is risky. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid and follow the hardware manufacturer’s guidance when the application itself is the real cause.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. The Windows Chakra engine is not verified as a normal COM in-process server.

Running:

regsvr32 chakra.dll

is unlikely to repair the problem and may produce an “entry point not found” message. That result does not prove the file is missing. Repair the owning application or Windows component instead.

Avoid random DLL download sites

Downloading chakra.dll from an unfamiliar DLL catalogue can give you:

  • Malware or a tampered file
  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A file with an invalid Microsoft signature
  • A copy that still lacks its dependencies
  • A version that creates a bad-image or entry-point error

There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download page for replacing this Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the Windows recovery tools, or the affected application’s official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use System Restore or Windows recovery

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or software installation.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Start the restore.
  5. Restart Windows.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.

If DISM, SFC, application repair, and System Restore fail, back up personal data and use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. Follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

What to collect if the error remains

Before asking for further support, record:

  • The exact error text
  • The executable name and complete path
  • The application name and version
  • Windows edition and build from winver
  • Whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The path, file size, version, and signature of every chakra.dll found
  • Windows Security quarantine history
  • Recent Windows Update, driver, cleanup, or malware-removal activity
  • Relevant Event Viewer or application crash details

Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs → Application around the failure time. The named executable and faulting module are often more useful than the generic missing-DLL dialog.

FAQ

Is chakra.dll part of Microsoft Edge?

It is associated with Microsoft Edge Legacy and its JavaScript runtime interfaces. Current Chromium-based Edge does not use the old Chakra engine.

Is chakra.dll the same as jscript9.dll?

No. jscript9.dll is the separate Chakra-based engine used by Internet Explorer and legacy Win32 JavaScript runtime applications.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Use DISM and SFC for a Windows copy, or repair the application that owns an app-local copy. Copying a file from another build can cause a bad-image or architecture error.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Not normally. Chakra is not established as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Repair that runtime only when the application reports a specific Visual C++ dependency problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the message say a module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, or the application may be loading an incompatible architecture or build. The message does not prove that chakra.dll itself is absent.

Does regsvr32 chakra.dll help?

No verified evidence shows that the Windows Chakra engine should be registered with regsvr32. Use Windows servicing or application repair instead.
