No. Dying inside a Chalice Dungeon does not delete it, and starting New Game Plus does not reset your dungeon altars. The progress-loss event is choosing Remove on an unfinished dungeon at a ritual altar; recreating it then starts the local run again at the Chamber of the Seal.

The two events players call a dungeon “disappearing”

Bloodborne uses the same broad language for several very different situations. A hunter can die during a dungeon run, remove a dungeon from an altar, or begin a new game cycle. Only one of those actions is documented as erasing an unfinished dungeon’s local progress.

Dying inside the dungeon

Death is not listed as a deletion action. The dungeon remains associated with its ritual altar after you die, so you can return to the Hunter’s Dream and enter it again. Your failed attempt may cost time and whatever you were carrying into that run, but death itself does not remove the dungeon from the altar.

Removing an unfinished dungeon

The altar’s Remove function is the reset that matters. If you remove a dungeon before completing it, the current run is lost. Performing the ritual again recreates the dungeon, but the recreated run begins at the Chamber of the Seal rather than at the room where you stopped.

Removing a completed dungeon

Removing a dungeon after its progression has been completed is different. The documented rule is that completed progression is not reverted. If you later recreate a preset dungeon, it remains the same preset rather than becoming a newly randomized replacement.

Entering New Game Plus

New Game Plus preserves the Chalice Dungeon altar state from the end of the previous cycle. It does not clear the dungeons from those altars, and it does not increase or otherwise change Chalice Dungeon difficulty. An altar that held a dungeon remains in that state when the new cycle begins; an altar you had already cleared remains cleared.

Death, removal, completion and New Game Plus compared

Action What happens at the altar Effect on the dungeon run What you do next
Die inside an active dungeon The dungeon remains available. Death does not delete the dungeon or its altar entry. Return to the same altar and enter the dungeon again.
Remove an unfinished dungeon The altar is freed for another ritual. The unfinished local run is lost. Recreate it with the required chalice and materials; start again at the Chamber of the Seal.
Remove a completed dungeon The altar is freed. Completed progression is not reverted. Recreate it later if needed; a preset dungeon remains the same preset.
Start New Game Plus Altars retain the state they had at the end of the previous cycle. Chalice progress is not reset by the cycle change, and Chalice difficulty is unchanged. Use the altars as they were left when the previous cycle ended.

What exactly is lost when an unfinished dungeon is removed?

The loss is the dungeon’s current local run. Think of an active ritual as a state attached to an altar: rooms explored during that run, doors opened, and the point you had reached are part of that state. Removing the ritual discards that unfinished state. When you perform the ritual again, you are starting that dungeon run over, not loading the previous room.

This is separate from overall Chalice Dungeon progression. The documented rule specifically distinguishes unfinished local progress from completed progression. Removing an unfinished ritual therefore does not mean every Chalice Dungeon achievement in your game is erased. It means that the particular active dungeon you removed must be traversed again.

It is also useful to separate the dungeon instance from the chalice used to create it. A chalice is the ritual key; the active dungeon is the result placed on an altar. The reset warning concerns the active dungeon’s unfinished run. If you are unsure what remains in your inventory or which ritual materials are required, check the ritual screen before attempting to recreate it rather than assuming that the old run can be resumed.

How Chalice Dungeon altars work

Chalice Dungeons are created and managed at the ritual altars in the Hunter’s Dream. You provide a chalice and the required materials, and the altar creates the associated dungeon. An occupied altar is where you return to continue that dungeon; removing it makes the altar available for another ritual.

  1. Travel to the Hunter’s Dream and approach the ritual altars.
  2. Select the altar that contains the dungeon you want to inspect.
  3. Use the altar’s management options to identify the active ritual and whether you still need its progression.
  4. Keep the dungeon in place if the run is unfinished and you want to continue from its saved altar state.
  5. Choose Remove only when you deliberately want to clear that altar. If the dungeon is unfinished, assume that recreating it will send you back to the Chamber of the Seal.

The altar is therefore the important location, not the character’s death screen. Leaving the Hunter’s Dream, closing the game, or beginning another activity does not equal selecting the altar’s removal command. The documented reset is tied to that explicit management action.

A safe check before you remove anything

Players often clear an altar because they need a free slot or because a dungeon appears finished. Before doing so, use this short decision process.

  • Do you still need to return to this dungeon? If you have not completed its progression, leave it on the altar.
  • Are you relying on an unfinished run? Removing it means the next ritual starts at the Chamber of the Seal, not at your last stopping point.
  • Have you completed the dungeon? The documented rule says completed progression is not reverted, so removing a completed dungeon is the safer way to free an altar.
  • Will you need the altar for another ritual immediately? Confirm that you have the chalice and required materials for the replacement ritual before clearing the existing one.
  • Are you about to start New Game Plus? There is no need to remove dungeons to protect them. The altar state carries into the new cycle.

If you cannot tell whether a dungeon is complete, treat it as unfinished. That conservative choice avoids intentionally discarding a run you still need.

How to recover after removing an unfinished dungeon

There is no documented “undo” command for an altar removal. Recovery means recreating the dungeon and replaying its local progression.

  1. Return to the Hunter’s Dream and select an available ritual altar.
  2. Choose the ritual that corresponds to the removed dungeon.
  3. Provide the chalice and every material the ritual requests.
  4. Complete the creation ritual.
  5. Enter the recreated dungeon and begin again at the Chamber of the Seal.

The recreated run should not be described as a continuation. Even when the dungeon layout is a preset and therefore remains the same, your unfinished position in the prior run is not restored. Plan for a full replay of the sections you had already cleared.

What happens to preset dungeons?

Removing a completed preset dungeon does not convert it into a different dungeon. The documented guidance says that preset dungeons remain the same when recreated. “The same” refers to the preset’s established dungeon content, not to a restoration of an unfinished run. If you removed a preset before completing it, you still restart at the Chamber of the Seal when you recreate it.

  • A New Generation of Action RPG: Stunningly detailed gothic environments, atmospheric lighting, and advanced new online experiences showcase the power and prowess of PlayStation 4.

This distinction explains why two players can report apparently different results. One may have removed a completed preset and seen no loss of completed progression. Another may have removed an unfinished ritual and had to repeat the run. Both observations fit the same altar rules.

New Game Plus: what carries over and what does not change

Starting a new cycle is not an altar reset. The Chalice Dungeon arrangement at the end of the previous cycle is preserved: active dungeons remain on their altars, and altars that were empty remain empty. You do not need to recreate every dungeon merely because the main game entered New Game Plus.

Chalice difficulty is also unaffected by the cycle change. New Game Plus makes the ordinary game cycle harder, but the documented Chalice rule does not apply that scaling to these dungeons. Do not remove a dungeon in an attempt to adjust its difficulty; removal only changes altar availability and, for an unfinished ritual, discards its local run.

If you want a clean set of altars for a new sequence of rituals, clear them intentionally before or after the cycle change. If you want to preserve an unfinished run, leave it in place. The cycle transition itself does not perform that choice for you.

Troubleshooting apparent disappearance

“I died and the altar is empty.”

Death alone is not the documented deletion event. Check whether the altar was manually cleared after the death, whether you are looking at the correct ritual altar, and whether another dungeon was placed there later. The relevant question is whether Remove was selected, not whether a death occurred.

“I recreated it, but I am back at the beginning.”

That is the expected result after removing an unfinished dungeon. Re-creating the ritual starts at the Chamber of the Seal. The altar has a new run state; it does not load the previous stopping point.

“I removed a dungeon I had finished. Did I lose its completion?”

The documented rule says completed progression is not reverted. You may have removed the active altar entry, but that is not the same as undoing completed progression. A preset can be recreated later in its established form.

“The dungeon changed after New Game Plus.”

New Game Plus does not change Chalice difficulty and does not reset altar state. Verify that you are using the same altar arrangement you had at the end of the prior cycle. If an altar was cleared before the transition, the new cycle preserves that cleared state rather than restoring the dungeon.

Evidence for the rule

The clearest reference is the Bloodborne Wiki guide’s FAQ, whose page revision is dated 19 September 2024. It identifies deleting an unfinished dungeon as the action that loses its progress, specifies the Chamber of the Seal as the restart point, and separately states that completed progression is not reverted. The same FAQ explains that entering a new cycle leaves dungeons on the same altars as at the end of the previous cycle and does not affect Chalice difficulty.

A Bloodborne Wikidot reference corroborates the underlying altar system: chalices and required materials are used to create rituals, and an altar has a remove function that frees it for another ritual. These references describe game behavior rather than an official developer statement, so the practical rule is best expressed in those precise terms: death is not the reset; removing an unfinished altar entry is.

The practical rule to remember

Keep an unfinished dungeon on its altar until you are ready to replay it from the beginning. Remove completed dungeons when you need their altar, and do not remove anything merely because you are entering New Game Plus. If a dungeon seems to have vanished after a death, investigate the altar’s management history first; the documented disappearance case is an intentional removal, not an ordinary defeat.
