Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Gigantamax Charizard are not three versions of the same mechanic. X and Y are temporary Mega Evolutions that require a Trainer’s Key Stone and the matching Charizardite, while Gigantamax Charizard is a temporary Max-battle transformation used in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Mega X changes to Fire/Dragon and uses Tough Claws; Mega Y stays Fire/Flying and sets sunlight with Drought; Gigantamax Charizard stays Fire/Flying, keeps Blaze on the cited Sword and Shield page, and turns Fire attacks into the residual-damage move G-Max Wildfire.

There is no universally strongest form. The right choice depends on the game, the battle system available there, the opponent’s weaknesses, and whether you want a Dragon typing, automatic sun, or a four-turn field-damage effect.

At a glance: the three Charizard forms

Form Transformation system Type Ability Listed weaknesses Signature context
Mega Charizard X Mega Evolution with a Trainer Key Stone and Charizardite X Fire/Dragon Tough Claws Rock, Ground, Dragon Changes Charizard’s secondary typing to Dragon; listed weight is 110.5 kg.
Mega Charizard Y Mega Evolution with a Trainer Key Stone and Charizardite Y Fire/Flying Drought Water, Electric, Rock Preserves the classic Fire/Flying typing; listed weight is 100.5 kg.
Gigantamax Charizard Gigantamax transformation in the Max battle system Fire/Flying Blaze Not stated on the cited official Sword and Shield page Available through Max Raid Battles in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield; listed height is 91’10"+.

The weights and height above are Pokédex figures supplied by The Pokémon Company International. They are descriptive entries, not a cross-game ranking of power. The official pages consulted do not provide a comparable machine-readable base-stat spread for all three forms, so a single stat table would be misleading without naming a specific game and ruleset.

How Mega Evolution and Gigantamax differ

Mega Evolution uses two required items

Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y are alternative Mega Evolutions. A Trainer wears a Key Stone, and Charizard must hold the compatible Mega Stone: Charizardite X for X or Charizardite Y for Y. The official Mega Evolution explanation emphasizes that Mega Evolution is temporary and that knowing when to unleash it is part of winning. In practical terms, you choose one form for that battle; X and Y are not simultaneous upgrades, and neither is a permanent species evolution.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The stone determines the form. Giving Charizardite X produces Mega Charizard X, while giving Charizardite Y produces Mega Charizard Y. Because the two forms have different types, abilities, and weakness profiles, the item choice is a strategic decision rather than a cosmetic preference.

Gigantamax belongs to the Max battle system

Gigantamax Charizard is a different transformation from both Mega forms. The cited official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield material describes obtaining it through Max Raid Battles. Its body becomes enormous during the Max battle, with a listed height of 91’10"+; the page does not present that height as a normal-world measurement for an ordinary Charizard.

Gigantamax Charizard remains Fire/Flying and is listed with Blaze. Its defining battle change is not a new secondary type but the conversion of Fire-type attacks into G-Max Wildfire. The official description says that G-Max Wildfire damages the target when it hits and then continues damaging every Pokémon that is not Fire type for four turns. That residual effect is the reason to select Gigantamax Charizard when the Max battle rules are active.

Mega Charizard X: the Fire/Dragon option

What changes

Mega Charizard X is Fire/Dragon, replacing Charizard’s Flying secondary type with Dragon. It has Tough Claws and a listed weight of 110.5 kg. The type change is the most consequential difference between the two Mega forms: X is no longer defined by the classic Fire/Flying combination, so its defensive matchups and the attacks that threaten it must be evaluated as Fire/Dragon instead.

Weaknesses and what they mean

The official Mega Charizard X Pokédex entry lists weaknesses to Rock, Ground, and Dragon. Those are the weaknesses to plan around when building a team or choosing a switch. A Rock-, Ground-, or Dragon-type attack can exploit the listed matchup, so do not assume that a Charizard that has changed into a Dragon type still has the same defensive profile as ordinary Charizard or Mega Charizard Y.

Why choose X

  • You want Dragon typing: Fire/Dragon gives X a different identity from the standard Charizard line and can make it the better fit for a team that benefits from that secondary type.
  • You value Tough Claws: X’s listed ability is Tough Claws, so its form is built around the ability rather than weather control.
  • You need a Mega form that is not Fire/Flying: If preserving Flying typing is undesirable for a particular matchup or team plan, X is the only one of the three compared forms that changes it.

X is not automatically superior to Y. Its advantages come with a different set of listed weaknesses, and the Mega Stone occupies the same form-defining choice that would otherwise produce Y.

Mega Charizard Y: the Fire/Flying sun setter

What stays familiar

Mega Charizard Y remains Fire/Flying, the typing associated with ordinary Charizard. It has Drought and a listed weight of 100.5 kg. Selecting Charizardite Y therefore keeps Charizard’s familiar airborne identity while adding a weather-setting ability.

Weaknesses and weather role

The official Mega Charizard Y entry lists Water, Electric, and Rock as weaknesses. Those matchups are different from the weaknesses listed for Mega Charizard X, so a team prepared for one Mega form should not be assumed to cover the other.

Drought is the central strategic reason to use Y. The ability makes Mega Charizard Y the form for players who want Charizard to establish sunlight as part of their battle plan. The exact consequences of that weather depend on the game’s rules and the rest of the team, but the form’s documented identity is clear: it combines the traditional Fire/Flying typing with Drought.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Why choose Y

  • You want to preserve Fire/Flying: Y does not exchange the Flying secondary type for Dragon.
  • Your team is built around sunlight: Drought gives Y a weather role that Mega Charizard X does not provide.
  • You prefer a weather-based plan to Tough Claws: The choice is between two different abilities and type profiles, not a simple higher-versus-lower power ranking.

Gigantamax Charizard: the Max-battle specialist

Where it is used

Gigantamax Charizard is tied to the Max battle system in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. The cited official page says it can be caught through Max Raid Battles. That game context matters: a Gigantamax form is not a substitute for a Mega Evolution in a battle system that does not use Max transformations, and Mega Stones are not the way to obtain or activate it.

G-Max Wildfire

When Gigantamax Charizard uses a Fire-type attack, it becomes G-Max Wildfire. The official wording specifies two parts: the move deals damage when it hits, then continues to damage any Pokémon that is not Fire type for four turns. This continuing effect is the form’s clearest tactical advantage because it pressures non-Fire Pokémon after the initial attack rather than ending with one hit.

Typing and ability

Gigantamax Charizard remains Fire/Flying and is listed with Blaze on the official Sword and Shield page. That means it shares its displayed typing with Mega Charizard Y, but it does not share Y’s Drought ability. It also does not gain Mega Charizard X’s Fire/Dragon typing or Tough Claws.

The cited Gigantamax page lists the type and ability but does not provide a weakness table. Do not copy the Mega X or Mega Y weakness lists into a Gigantamax comparison as though they were an official Gigantamax entry. If you need a matchup answer, use the rules and data for the specific Sword or Shield battle in question.

Typing, ability, and signature effect compared

Question Mega Charizard X Mega Charizard Y Gigantamax Charizard
Does the secondary type change? Yes. Fire/Dragon No. Fire/Flying No. Fire/Flying
What ability is listed? Tough Claws Drought Blaze
What is the defining battle effect? A Dragon-typed Mega form with Tough Claws Sun-setting Drought while retaining Fire/Flying Fire attacks become G-Max Wildfire, with four turns of continuing damage to non-Fire Pokémon
Which system activates it? Mega Evolution Mega Evolution Gigantamax in Max battles

This is why questions such as “Which one has the highest stats?” do not have a responsible answer without a named game and format. The supplied official pages do not expose complete, directly comparable base-stat spreads for all three forms, while the systems themselves impose different battle rules.

Which Charizard form should you use?

  1. Identify the game and battle system. If you are playing a Sword or Shield Max battle, Gigantamax Charizard is the relevant transformation. If the format permits Mega Evolution, decide between Charizardite X and Charizardite Y instead.
  2. Choose the type profile you need. Pick X for Fire/Dragon; pick Y or Gigantamax for Fire/Flying.
  3. Choose the ability or effect that supports your plan. Tough Claws points to Mega X, Drought points to Mega Y, and G-Max Wildfire points to Gigantamax Charizard.
  4. Check the opponent’s likely attacks. For X, account for the listed Rock, Ground, and Dragon weaknesses. For Y, account for Water, Electric, and Rock. The cited Gigantamax page does not state a weakness table, so verify that matchup within the applicable game data rather than borrowing one from a Mega form.
  5. Confirm the required item or encounter source. Mega X needs Charizardite X and a Trainer Key Stone; Mega Y needs Charizardite Y and a Trainer Key Stone. Gigantamax Charizard is obtained through Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, not by equipping either Mega Stone.

Common mistakes when comparing the forms

  • Treating Mega Evolution as permanent: The official explanation calls Mega Evolution temporary. X and Y are battle transformations, not permanent replacements for Charizard.
  • Calling X Fire/Flying: Mega Charizard X is Fire/Dragon. Fire/Flying applies to Mega Charizard Y and Gigantamax Charizard in the cited entries.
  • Giving Y Tough Claws or X Drought: Tough Claws belongs to X; Drought belongs to Y.
  • Confusing G-Max Wildfire with a normal Fire attack: Its documented distinction is the additional four turns of damage to Pokémon that are not Fire type.
  • Mixing game systems: Mega Stones and Max battle transformations are separate mechanics. Always name the game before declaring a form available or optimal.
  • Inventing Gigantamax weaknesses from a Mega entry: The cited official Gigantamax page lists its type and ability but does not include a weakness table.

The practical verdict

Choose Mega Charizard X when you specifically want Fire/Dragon and Tough Claws. Choose Mega Charizard Y when keeping Fire/Flying and activating Drought better serves your team. Choose Gigantamax Charizard in the Sword and Shield Max battle system when you want Fire/Flying, Blaze, and G-Max Wildfire’s four turns of continuing damage to non-Fire Pokémon. None is a universal upgrade over the others: they belong to different systems and solve different battle problems.
