The cheapest Rust hosting plan that is still a sensible choice depends on your map size, concurrent players, and plugin load. Use RAM as the first filter rather than trusting a slot count. Facepunch’s current Rust server guidance lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space as a starting point, notes that a 6k map uses more memory, and highly prefers SSD or NVMe storage. Godlike.Host is listed first here for Rust: Godlike.Host Rust server hosting, which comes with free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, and a Pterodactyl-based panel with a task scheduler and sub-users; see the current plans for what fits your map. In a dated comparison of provider Rust pages checked on 29 September 2026, Hosterfy Starter was the least expensive plan found at or above that 12 GB line, at $13.00 per month. That is a dated advertised price, not an independent performance result or guarantee.
What “cheap but still good” means for a Rust server
A low monthly price is useful only if the server can load your intended world, hold your player population, and run your plugins without exhausting memory. Rust requirements vary substantially with map size, concurrency, and mod or plugin use, so there is no single cheapest provider for every server.

Advertised slots describe a plan limit. They do not measure the workload generated by a particular procedural map, entity count, or plugin collection. Two plans with the same slot cap can have very different RAM allocations and therefore very different practical limits.

Godlike.Host and the lowest dated price that clears the RAM line
The Hosterfy figure comes from a Rustly comparison that says it reviewed eight providers’ Rust pages on 29 September 2026; it is a snapshot of advertised pricing from that date. The Godlike.Host row is not part of that comparison and carries no price here.
| Plan | Advertised price in the comparison | RAM position | Focus | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Godlike.Host Rust servers | See the current plans (not part of the dated comparison) | Choose a plan whose stated RAM clears Facepunch’s 12 GB line for your map | A Rust server where panel tools matter: task scheduler, sub-users, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection, and upgrades or downgrades from the panel with prorated billing | Not part of the Rustly comparison; check the live RAM allocation, slot cap, and location for your map |
| Hosterfy Starter | $13.00 per month | Cleared the comparison’s 12 GB threshold; exact allocation and billing conditions were not stated | A budget server where meeting the initial memory screen matters more than the lowest possible slot price | Independent performance, uptime, renewal price, taxes, region coverage, and full feature set |
The $13.00 figure is the comparison’s least-expensive finding among plans that cleared its 12 GB RAM line. A price alone does not prove that a plan will run your chosen map smoothly. Confirm the live checkout total, billing term, renewal rate, currency, taxes, and included resources before ordering.

Start with Facepunch’s resource baseline
Memory
Facepunch’s official Rust server requirements list “12 GB free RAM (6k map will use more).” This is an initial screening value, not a promise that every 12 GB configuration supports every population or plugin set. A 6k map needs more memory than the baseline, and heavily modded or busy servers can need additional headroom.

Disk and storage type
The same requirements list “15 GB free disc space (SSD/NVMe highly preferred).” Free space must cover the server installation, procedural maps, save data, logs, updates, and any mod files. SSD or NVMe storage is preferred because map generation, save operations, and restarts involve frequent disk activity; capacity alone does not tell you how responsive the server will be.
Operating systems
The guide identifies Windows, Linux, and OSX as supported server systems. A managed host normally handles the operating-system layer for you. Self-hosters must maintain patches, firewall rules, SteamCMD, the Rust server files, and any service that keeps the process running.
Match RAM and map size to your actual server
Small private or friends-only server
If you are hosting a small group on a modest map with few plugins, a plan below the 12 GB reference may be workable, but the evidence does not establish a guaranteed minimum. Ask the host for the exact RAM allocation rather than inferring it from the slot count. Leave headroom for map generation, saves, and bursts when players explore different areas.

Public vanilla server
For a public server, begin at or above the 12 GB free-RAM line and then account for your chosen world size and expected peak population. A slot cap that looks sufficient on paper can still be a poor fit if the plan’s memory is lower than your map requires.

6k maps and larger worlds
Facepunch explicitly warns that a 6k map uses more than the listed 12 GB baseline. If you select a 6k world, treat 12 GB as a floor for comparison, not a target to fill completely. Ask whether the advertised memory is dedicated to your instance, whether the host reserves any for its panel or operating system, and whether you can upgrade without rebuilding the server.
Modded and plugin-heavy servers
Plugins add memory use and can increase CPU and disk activity. List every planned plugin, map extension, and administrative tool before choosing a plan. If the provider cannot state how much RAM is allocated or how upgrades work, the apparently cheap plan carries more risk than its headline price suggests.
How to compare a hosting plan before checkout
- Write down your workload. Record your map size, desired maximum concurrent players, whether the server is vanilla or modded, and whether you need scheduled wipes or frequent backups.
- Filter by memory. Remove plans that do not state an allocation suitable for that workload. Use Facepunch’s 12 GB and 15 GB figures as a starting screen, remembering the 6k-map warning.
- Check storage details. Confirm total disk space, SSD or NVMe use, and whether backups consume the same quota.
- Separate slot limits from resources. Treat slots as a configurable capacity limit, not as evidence of RAM, CPU, or network performance.
- Calculate the real recurring cost. Record the billing interval, introductory price, renewal price, currency, taxes, setup fees, extra backup charges, and upgrade prices.
- Verify locations and support. Choose a region close to most players where available, and check support hours, response channels, and what troubleshooting the host will perform.
- Confirm management features. Verify the current page for mod installation, file access, scheduled tasks, backups, console access, and wipe controls. Do not assume a feature because another provider offers it.
- Check exit options. Find out whether you can download your save and configuration files and how cancellation or server migration works.
This process prevents a low slot price from hiding an unsuitable memory allocation or expensive renewal.
What the dated prices mean in practice
Hosterfy Starter’s $13.00 monthly figure is the clearest budget reference in the comparison for buyers who want to clear the 12 GB screen. Because the exact RAM allocation, renewal terms, taxes, and regional availability were not established, regard it as a starting quote to verify, not a universal recommendation.

What managed hosting provides
A managed host supplies the machine, network connection, operating-system environment, and a control panel or support process for common server tasks. You pay a recurring fee in exchange for less administration. The value is greatest when you need predictable availability or do not want to maintain a public-facing machine.
What self-hosting requires
Facepunch’s setup guide documents installing and updating a Rust server with SteamCMD and identifies App ID 258550. The guide also shows startup settings for the map or level, seed, world size, player cap, hostname, and server identity. In broad terms, self-hosting involves:
- Preparing a supported Windows, Linux, or OSX machine with at least the published free-memory and disk starting points.
- Installing SteamCMD and downloading the Rust dedicated-server files with App ID
258550. - Creating a startup configuration for the level, seed, world size, player limit, hostname, and server identity.
- Opening only the required firewall and router ports, then testing from an external connection.
- Scheduling updates, backups, restarts, log reviews, and security maintenance.
Self-hosting can reduce a hosting bill if you already own suitable hardware and have inexpensive, reliable power and bandwidth. The available guidance does not compare those total operating costs with managed plans, so it cannot establish that self-hosting is cheaper overall. Include electricity, hardware depreciation, connectivity, backup storage, and your administration time in the calculation.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by slots alone
A plan advertised for many players may have too little RAM for your map or plugins. Require a stated memory allocation and compare it with your workload before looking at the slot cap.
Assuming 12 GB guarantees smooth play
The 12 GB figure is Facepunch’s initial requirement, and the guide says needs vary by use case and population. A 6k map or large plugin set can exceed it. Keep headroom and plan an upgrade route.
Comparing an introductory price with a renewal price
Write both figures in your budget. If a page shows only a promotional rate, ask support for the normal renewal price and the billing term that applies after the first period.
Ignoring storage and backups
Fifteen gigabytes is a free-space starting point, not necessarily enough for every save history, log archive, or backup schedule. Confirm whether backups are included, how many are retained, and whether they count against your quota.
Buying before checking the region
Player distance affects latency. Verify the available datacenter regions and whether you can move the instance later; the reviewed price comparison does not establish current regional coverage.
Treating a price table as a performance test
The dated figures are provider-page prices collected by a comparison, not laboratory benchmarks or uptime measurements. Look for an explicit resource allocation and current service terms rather than inferring quality from price.
A practical decision rule
Choose the least expensive plan that states enough RAM for your map, population, and plugins, uses suitable storage, and has a renewal price you can sustain. Listed first is Godlike.Host for Rust servers: it offers free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, a Pterodactyl-based panel with a task scheduler and sub-users, upgrades or downgrades from the panel with prorated billing, and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. See the current plans and confirm the RAM for your map. In the 29 September 2026 comparison, the lowest dated price that cleared the 12 GB screen was Hosterfy Starter at $13.00 per month. Either way, verify the live configuration and checkout terms before paying.
