Flux has the lowest advertised starting price found for a Terraria server: $1.49 per month. That figure is only a starting point, not proof that its smallest plan suits your world. The right low-cost choice depends on RAM, vanilla or modded software, player activity, region, backups, renewal pricing and how much setup you are willing to do.
There is no supported worldwide “cheapest” host. Prices below use different currencies, billing terms and resource models, so compare equivalent plans and verify the checkout total before paying.

What the cheapest good Terraria hosting actually means
A Terraria server can be inexpensive because the plan has limited RAM, uses a promotional first term, charges per player slot, or leaves more administration to you. Those are different products even when their headline prices look similar.
For a persistent world, “good” means more than being able to launch once. The service should keep the world online while the owner is away, let you upload and download the world file, support the exact server software and mods you need, provide a practical recovery method, and place the server near your players. Advertised player counts and backup badges are provider claims, not independent performance tests.
#1 Best Overall
- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
Start by describing your actual workload:
- Vanilla or lightly populated worlds usually need fewer resources than a large world with several simultaneous players.
- tModLoader and other modded configurations can require more memory and more careful version management than vanilla play.
- TShock is a different server software choice from tModLoader. A host supporting one does not automatically support the other.
- Large builds, active farms, frequent world saves and busy events can increase resource use even with a modest player list.
Use the cheapest tier as a starting hypothesis. Keep logs and server controls available so you can resize or move the world if the plan becomes unstable.
Current low-cost options
| Option | Advertised price or resource | What is stated | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flux | $1.49/month starting price; 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB tiers | One-week free period for eligible new customers; hourly world backups; downloadable .wld world; servers use TShock; player figures are sizing guidance rather than a hard cap. |
Eligibility for the free period, renewal price, billing term, retention and restoration of backups, available regions, and whether your required mods run on TShock. |
| HostPanel (UK pricing checked August 2026) | £5/month for 2 GB; £10 for 4 GB; £15 for 6 GB | The listed monthly rate is also the stated renewal rate. Its guidance positions 2 GB for vanilla worlds and higher tiers for larger or modded configurations. | Whether the plan is available in your country, taxes, location, exact software support, storage, backup retention and restore procedure. |
| Apex Hosting (secondary comparison figure) | $3.99/month for a listed 1 GB entry offer | Price appears in a comparison updated September 2026. | Confirm the provider checkout price, term, renewal, included features, region and current Terraria support directly. |
| Shockbyte (secondary comparison figure) | $4.99/month for a listed bundle | Price appears in the same secondary comparison. | The bundle’s exact RAM, slot or resource model, billing conditions, renewal and mod support require direct verification. |
The Flux and HostPanel figures come from their own published pages; the latter two are leads from a third-party comparison, not a quality ranking. That comparison discloses that vendors can pay for placement, so its order should not be treated as an unbiased winner list.
Why the $1.49 Flux figure needs context
$1.49 per month is the lowest explicit starting price identified, but it does not establish that a 1 GB plan will handle every world. Flux describes 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB choices and presents player numbers as guidance. It also says its servers use TShock, includes hourly world backups and makes the world downloadable as a .wld file. Those are useful features, but they remain provider statements; ask how long backups are retained and how a restore is initiated before relying on them.

Treat it as a conditional trial and read the eligibility and billing language before entering payment details.

How to read HostPanel’s UK prices
HostPanel lists £5 for 2 GB, £10 for 4 GB and £15 for 6 GB per month, with the same stated rate at renewal. It also publishes a £2.50-per-GB-per-month formula. These are that provider’s prices and recommendations, not a market-wide RAM rate or an official Terraria requirement. The 2 GB vanilla suggestion can be a sensible starting point for a small group, while larger or modded worlds may justify the 4 GB or 6 GB tiers.
How much RAM does a Terraria server need?
No official current Terraria document establishes a universal hosted-server RAM minimum. Provider sizing charts are useful planning guidance, but they are not independent benchmarks. Choose a tier by workload and leave room for growth rather than matching a player-count slogan exactly.
| Workload | Practical starting approach | Why it may need more |
|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla world and a few friends | Consider a 1–2 GB plan, then watch memory use and save behaviour. | Large worlds, active farms, frequent events or additional services can exhaust a minimal tier. |
| Regular vanilla group with a larger world | Start around 2 GB where the provider’s plan and software support fit. | More simultaneous activity and world complexity can require an upgrade. |
| Light modded play | Use a tier above the smallest option and confirm the host supports the exact loader and versions. | Mods vary widely in memory use; “modded” is not one predictable workload. |
| Heavy modpack or busy community world | Compare higher-RAM plans, CPU allocation and resize options rather than choosing by price alone. | Large content packs, many entities and concurrent players can create both memory and CPU pressure. |
When a provider publishes a recommendation, label it as that provider’s guidance. Do not present 512 MB, 1–2 GB or 4 GB figures found on hosting pages as official Terraria requirements.
Managed hosting versus running the official dedicated server
Managed game-server hosting
A managed plan normally supplies a control panel, a persistent machine, file access and some combination of installation, updates, support and backups. It is usually the simplest route when friends need to join without the owner leaving a home computer running. The trade-off is recurring cost and dependence on the host’s panel, locations and policies.

Self-hosting
Terraria’s official site provides a PC dedicated-server download, so you can run the server on a computer you control. This can avoid a monthly hosting bill, but the evidence available does not establish a current official RAM minimum or prove that self-hosting is cheaper after hardware, electricity, internet service, port forwarding, maintenance and your time.
Self-hosting also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, world backups, public IP changes, crash recovery and keeping the server software compatible with every player’s client. It is attractive when you already have suitable hardware and are comfortable administering it; it is not automatically the lowest total cost.
A step-by-step buying process
- Define the world. Record world size, expected simultaneous players, vanilla or modded play, the loader or server software, and any specific modpack. Do not buy until you know whether the host supports that exact combination.
- Normalize the price. Convert currencies, identify whether the amount is monthly or an equivalent based on a longer term, and write down the renewal rate, taxes and setup fees. Separate a first-term promotion from the recurring price.
- Check resources. Compare RAM, CPU allocation, storage, backups and whether the plan can be resized. A per-slot plan and a RAM-based plan cannot be compared by the headline number alone.
- Check the region. Select a data-centre location reasonably close to the group and confirm that it is offered for the Terraria plan, not merely elsewhere on the provider’s website.
- Inspect operations. Verify the panel’s file manager or SFTP method, world upload and download, software/version selector, scheduled tasks, console access and update process.
- Validate recovery. Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained, whether they cover the world and configuration, and whether you can download one. If possible, perform a test restore on a copied world before inviting everyone.
- Use the trial carefully. If a free period is offered, check eligibility, automatic conversion, cancellation timing and the exact date billing begins. Do not assume a trial applies universally.
- Start small, then measure. Upload a copy of the world, invite the normal group and observe memory, CPU, save times and disconnects during the busiest session. Upgrade or move if the plan is consistently constrained.
Mod and software compatibility
Compatibility is one of the easiest ways to turn a cheap plan into wasted money. Ask the host three separate questions:
- Which Terraria server software is available: vanilla, TShock, tModLoader or another option?
- Which game and loader versions are currently offered, and can you pin a version while the group updates?
- Can you install the exact modpack yourself, and where do its files and configuration reside?
Flux states that its servers use TShock. That may suit TShock plugins and administration features, but it should not be interpreted as automatic tModLoader support. HostPanel’s published guidance distinguishes vanilla, light tModLoader and heavier modded configurations; confirm the current installation path and versions directly. A provider that supports “mods” in general may still lack your loader, dependency or version.

Backups, portability and failure recovery
A backup label is not the same as a tested restore. Before committing a valuable world, establish:
- How frequently automatic backups run and whether they are world-only or full server snapshots.
- How many copies are retained and whether retention changes between plans.
- Whether you can download the
.wldfile and configuration independently of the control panel. - Whether restoration overwrites the live world, requires support, or can be performed into a separate test instance.
- What happens when a subscription expires or a payment fails.
Keep an offline copy before changing server software, loading a new modpack or converting a world. If the world becomes corrupted, stop the server, preserve the current files for diagnosis, and restore the newest known-good copy rather than repeatedly launching the damaged save. After a restore, test player inventories, chests, spawn points and mod dependencies before reopening the world.

Promotional pricing that disappears
A low first payment may be tied to a long billing term or a new-customer promotion. Record the renewal amount and cancellation deadline in the same comparison sheet as the advertised price.

Wrong software for the modpack
Installing a TShock server when your group requires tModLoader, or choosing a version the mods do not support, can prevent the world from starting. Confirm before uploading the live save.
Backups that cannot be restored
Hourly copies are useful only if they are retained, accessible and restorable. Test the process with a duplicate world and maintain your own download.
Remote region and support delays
A cheaper plan in a distant region can produce worse latency for the whole group. Support response times, maintenance windows and region availability should be part of the price comparison.

- Lowest advertised price: Flux is the price leader found here at $1.49 per month, provided its TShock setup, region and resource tier match your world and its current checkout terms remain acceptable.
- UK buyer wanting stated renewal pricing: HostPanel’s £5, £10 and £15 monthly tiers make the recurring amount explicit, but its guidance still needs to be matched to your software and workload.
- Buyer comparing a broad shortlist: Use secondary comparison figures such as the listed $3.99 1 GB offer and $4.99 bundle only as leads, then verify each provider directly.
- Hands-on administrator with existing hardware: The official PC dedicated-server download makes self-hosting possible, but calculate electricity, connectivity, maintenance and backup time before calling it cheaper.
Final buying checklist
- Recurring monthly equivalent and renewal price are written down.
- Currency, taxes, billing term and promotional eligibility are clear.
- RAM, CPU, storage and resize options match the expected workload.
- Vanilla, TShock, tModLoader and the exact versions or modpack are confirmed.
- Region is suitable for every regular player.
- World download, backup retention and restore steps are documented.
- Cancellation, expiration and data-deletion rules are understood.
- You have an independent copy of the
.wldworld before major changes.
For a small vanilla group, a low-RAM managed plan can be perfectly adequate, and Flux’s $1.49 starting price is the cheapest advertised entry found for this comparison. It becomes a good deal only when the actual tier, software, location, renewal cost and recovery controls fit your world. If any of those are unknown, the cheapest safe decision is to verify them before ordering rather than relying on the headline price.
