Daniel “Danya” Naroditsky, the American chess grandmaster known for elite play and unusually accessible online teaching, died on October 19, 2025, aged 29. The Charlotte Chess Center announced his death without giving a cause. In January 2026, Chess.com reported the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s findings: his death was ruled accidental, with probable cardiac arrhythmia associated with systemic sarcoidosis.

Who was Daniel Naroditsky?

Naroditsky was a grandmaster, author, coach, commentator and online creator who connected high-level chess with audiences learning the game. His influence came not from one title or statistic alone, but from combining serious competitive credentials with clear instruction and frequent online commentary.

According to FIDE, he was born in San Mateo, California, on November 9, 1995, and learned chess at six. He became a FIDE Master in 2007, an International Master in 2011 and a Grandmaster in 2013. He won the under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in 2007 and the U.S. Junior Championship in 2013. His peak classical FIDE rating was 2647, reached in May 2017. He later graduated from Stanford with a degree in history.

What the medical examiner later reported

In a report updated January 22, 2026, Chess.com summarized findings from the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office. The medical examiner ruled the manner of death accidental and identified probable cardiac arrhythmia associated with systemic sarcoidosis.

The summary also said toxicology detected substances, but their concentrations were not fatal and the examiner found no evidence of an intentional or unintentional overdose. Their presence should not be treated as an explanation for his death: the reported cause was probable cardiac arrhythmia associated with systemic sarcoidosis.

How did Naroditsky influence chess?

Naroditsky taught at the Charlotte Chess Center, commentated on prominent events—particularly for Chess.com—and built popular Twitch and YouTube channels, according to FIDE. The Associated Press described his livestreams as a way to explain chess to a broad audience. From 2014 to 2020, he also wrote a column for Chess Life.

That mix made him legible to different kinds of chess fans: viewers could watch a strong player compete, hear him explain decisions, and follow lessons outside tournament coverage. FIDE reproduced a line Naroditsky gave The New York Times in 2022 that captured his reflective approach to the game: “At the end of the game, both the king and the pawn go into the same box.”

What happened with the cheating allegations?

Naroditsky faced cheating allegations from former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. In an October 28, 2025 statement, FIDE’s Ethics & Disciplinary Commission acknowledged petitions concerning alleged bullying and unfounded cheating claims. Commission chairwoman Yolander Persaud said it would act once a formal complaint was before it, emphasizing due process.

The statement described allegations and a procedural position; it was not a final adjudication. It also does not establish that controversy, stress or the allegations caused Naroditsky’s death.
